Hi all, my family and I just returned from a 5-night stay at the Poly in a standard room. The resort was phenomenal but we paid through the nose, rack rate. Only after I had booked everything with my TA and was close to travel dates did I really pick up on what DVC rental was so after this last trip I'm very interested in using this option next time to save money.

I have read through websites and threads here talking about insurance for DVC rentals. If not wanting to use the insurance offered through David's or others, who have you booked insurance with that would cover a travel arrangement like this?

If naming a specific insurance company can you tell me what type of policy and if you remember, how much it may have cost?

My 2 girlfriends and I are looking to bring all our kiddos next spring for a Mommy-and-Me type trip. I had initially mentioned April but it looks like May DVC rentals are cheaper so we may go that route.

Thanks in advance for any help~

I would also like to know this. We are looking at renting for next February and the insurance through the actual DVC company is pricey. I'm wondering if there is a more cost effective way to have some insurance on a rental?

I was referred to insuremytrip.com and have used them for non Disney trips. I rented points for our next trip and I'm thinking of getting insurance. I'm looking into some insurances on that site but I don't know if they cover timeshares.

I guess I can't say the site but it was referred to me on these boards.

You can google "trip insurance comparisons". There is a site, likely the site the PP was trying to mention, which asked Disboards to not allow links to their site because they wanted to drive up clicks from Google. That's why this one, very popular, trip insurance site is not permitted to be mentioned. But it will likely be the top result of a google search. I've used it multiple times, including our trip last September when I rented points from David's.

Hmmm...not being able to share links or names is making this somewhat difficult. I've used Travelguard and Travelex in the past for WDW and other trips. I'm not sure that the insurance offered directly by David's is the best option. I googled "trip insurance comparison" and am wondering if insuremytrip dot com is the aforementioned site?

We use A I G travel guard. You insure just like you would for the hotel part of a trip. You can pick the level of coverage and the terms are pretty clear,

Thank you for your reply. I have heard from the DISboards admin that we cannot link to an insurance company. I do not know how else to find out what insurance people have used for coverage when specifically renting DVC points. I don't get it. Before your reply gets deleted I'm very glad I saw it, thanks!

I've never booked points and I hope you get some specific feedback about DVC rental insurance, but I have purchased insurance a few times for other types of trips, and when I did that I read *every* line of what is covered for about 15 different policies. I did a comparison through i n s u r e my trip d o t c o m. Canceling a trip is only covered based on the specific reasons outlined in the policy.

So, for example, one of my concerns always is whether my husband or I will be so swamped with work that we decide we cannot go. That is *not* a covered reason on any of the policies. One of us would need to have a documented case of having lost our job (that is a covered reason).

Another reason why we may cancel (before we moved the kids to private school) is that our school district could cancel a break because they needed to make up weather days. This year in Atlanta has been particularly bad. We lost days for Irma, and then for possible snow (cough, SEC championship), then for real snow, etc. That is another reason that is *not* covered in regular policies.

Another reason why we may cancel is because we think the weather may not be very good. Again, weather is *not* a covered reason. There has to be a documented closing of airports for at least XX number of hours.

Anyways, you get my point. Reading the policies is a must. The usual things covered are a person in the immediate travel party being sick, or losing a job, or being in a sequestered jury, or having an immediate family member die or be hospitalized, or the airport being closed for XX hours due to major weather. And sickness is only covered for some policies for pre-existing conditions if the insurance is purchased within X number of days from the first trip-related payment. In some cases, the insurance has to be purchased within 24 hours of the first deposit.

When we rented DVC points we just purchased insurance with them. We didn't use it but did feel better about having it. Glad to hear other people have used private insurance.

If I think I have the correct DVC company, I considered their insurance but it paid less the closer it got to the trip. Although you could cancel for any reason. Private insurance companies have much broader coverage (medical, evacuation, lost luggage, ....) Even cancel for any reason it you're willing to pay extra. But we always buy travel insurance now because the first time we bought it my wife was hospitalized in Orlando and the insurance paid for extra hotel, air fare, and the medical deductible on the order of about $2000.

Thanks for your reply. I didn’t think about if you get hospitalized during a trip, like how having to change flights and stuff could be affected. One policy said if you use airline points for a trip they won’t refund any of that because points are hard to translate to dollars.

I have multiple credit cards that provide trip cancellation/interruption insurance. Usually fly through southwest so I am not concerned about airfare if changing travel dates, but did want to protect the money paid upfront for DVC rental.
