Outer Banks and Ocracoke, NC

I'm taking a group of teenage boys to Cape Hatteras for surfing. Is anybody on the boards from there. We're leaving Thurs for a week and I'm trying to get an idea on weather and ocean temps. Also, on one day while the boys are surfing I'm going to Ocracoke by myself. Any tips on places to shop and eat? I'm going to force myself to eat lunch by myself, maybe breakfast or dinner. We are staying in Frisco, and there is really nothing else to do there but surf.

We stayed in Frisco last for a week last summer and loved it. You are right, there wasn't much to do there other than relax and watch the surfers. We spent a day at Ocracoke shopping and sightseeing. There are lots of little shops to explore in. We tried to eat lunch at Howard's Pub because I had heard alot of good things about it. It was very crowded so we ended up across the road at a place called Jason's. I had some seafood there that was pretty tasty.

I do love Frisco. But in April the weather can go either way. And I am a big pirate fan and want to go to Teaches Hole on Ocracoke so while I'm there I'll spend the day at Ocracoke. I think there is a new shipwreck museum there as well.

There is a small water park a little north of where you'll be.
Cape Hatteras lighthouse was open to climbers last summer.
You can visit Ocrakoke lighthouse, but cannot climb it.
We've been going every year since 1999 and stay north in Nags Head.
The earliest I've been there is May-we've had rainy weeks,
windy weeks (it's like getting your skin sandblasted),
and sunny weeks with 70-80 average highs.
We rented full body wetsuits-last year in July-the ocean storms brought in some cooooold water.
