Those of you, like me, afflicted with the belief that if only I had a faster focusing system and higher ISO settings availalble I could take pictures like <name your favorite photographer> will understand why I'm pacing around the front room.

My new 60D body is riding around in the UPS truck right now.

Once it gets here I plan to throw a battery and SD card in it and head to our local Exploreum - they've got a traveling Australia show with Kangaroos and Wallabys, etc.

It doesn't get any better - a new toy and cute, furry creatures to take pictures of.;)

Congratulations on the new camera. I just got my new one three weeks ago and I know how exciting it can be. Have fun!!:thumbsup2

How awesome for you and congrats. :thumbsup2 I certainly believe it's only a matter of having better equipment. If I could shoot unlimited ISO levels with L series fast glass, my pictures would be better than anything on the boards! :rotfl2: Seriously though, since many of the folks responding to this post so far have given me lots of advice, and I think we're all friends (or board buddies).... I just have to ask..... How much was the camera?

Enjoy the new toy and the cute, furry critters....Hope you'll post some pics. popcorn::

AWESOME!

Loan me a few frames per second for my son's cross country meet tomorrow???? :teeth:

Better post some cool kangaroo pictures tomorrow!

My upgrade won't come until Christmas.:sad1:
Happy for you though! Congrats on the upgrade.

Well - OP here.

As it turns out reality raised it's ugly head and I was unable to get to the Exploreum because of a bit of a stomach virus...

Below is a 1:1 crop of the one shot I am willing to show from the various trial photos I took around the house (the rest of them are really boring - we have no pets ;) ). You can click on the photo to go to the Smugmug gallery where the full photo is located.

I've been making some notes about using the camera compared to my Rebel XS and I plan to put those thoughts in a posting in a few days. So far the camera has nicely demonstrated two of the reasons I decided to upgrade - the first, it focuses more surely and faster (the picture below for example), and secondly it takes a decent enough picture at ISO 6400 that Topaz can clean it up (watch out dark rides, I've got a 50mm F1.8 and a body that knows how to use it :rotfl:)

OP here,

As promised (threatened? ;)) here are some Kangaroo and Wallaby photos from our local (modest) Exploreum. I'll be adding another post to describe how I'm doing with the camera - in general so far so good, I'm more than satisfied with the 60D.

The exhibit consists of a main display (20x50 foot) cage with 10 or so Adult Kangaroos of different types and a nearby 8x8 foot cage with 3 Joeys.

Shooting through the 'chicken wire' cage was a bit annoying, but if I got right up against it I could get most of it out of the cropped final photo. The only problem with that was 'Big Red' (the larger reddish character in the first photo) thought I was a threat so if he saw me doing it he would head my way - see the third shot for an example. Other than Big Red the rest of them seemed unconcerned by being observered.

The baby Wallabys have hanging bags to climb into to simulate mommie. These little Joeys are cute and cuddly, not aggressive, and seem to like being petted and stroked. Their fur is similar to a short-haired dog in feel.
