I had made so many "requests" regarding this reservation based on so many things I had read on this board, that I was so afraid that we would show up and they would think we were crazy or demanding or both.

We had the earliest reservation - 5:30 - and were so happy to have it because when I called 6 months ago the date of our 30th anniversary - February 26 - was already filled, so I had to settle for the 27th, until I called about 3 weeks ago and was able to change to the 26th.

We were the first people to arrive, and my husband was given a lovely loaner jacket that I had requested (it was the only "suit" place on our trip, no sense lugging your own when we have found most fine restaurants provide them). I had made a laundry list of paranoid seating requests - in the main room with the harp player, not under the dome...and we were given the first table just beyond the door to the "other" room, on the other side of the doorway from the harp player. We usually don't like to be that close to the front, but knowing they complied with every one of my requests, we didn't say anything...and as a matter of fact, the table turned out to be perfect. Several large parties were seated in the back so our table was very quiet, it was fun to see everyone coming and going, and we did have a wonderful position to softly hear the harp player (who was able to play "our" song from memory, a VERY VERY oldie - she said she had not had that requested in years, but did a wonderful job).

Our servers were wonderful - two names that started with "B" - Bill and Barbara? Bob and Brenda? Brad and Beverly? I'm sorry I don't remember, but they were great. I know a meal like this for some people is a "once in a lifetime thing", but we're older and very lucky that we've dined in many, many fine restaurants, so are very comfortable with the whole experience. I also had mentioned in my reservation that I thought we would want to do the Tasting Menu in the dining room, but when we got the menu we really didn't like every single thing on it, so ended up each choosing a different selection from each course, which we quite discreetly shared, so we really had the best of all worlds.

Everything was delicious. The wines complemented each course perfectly.

I know the menu changes all the time so what we had might be irrelevant to your upcoming trip, but I also know I loved hearing what other people had before we went, so:

ME: Lemongrass poached gulf shrimp with cabbage slaw and sesame seed tuille
DH: Seared Colorado buffalo tenderloin, braised fennel, radishes and Satsuma tangerine Vinaigrette

ME: Pan roasted foie gras and Fuji apple tart with Mostarda di Cremona
DH: Long Island Duck with roasted Chiogga beets and turnip kraut

ME: Dungeness crab timbale with Salsify and Violette Moustard sauce
DH: John Dory over roasted butternut squash, Styrian pumpkinseed oil

ME: Japanese "Kobe" strip loin with oxtail jus (which I asked for on the side, glad I did, it was too rich for me...this also came with some shredded short rib meat in a small cup - delicious)
DH: March Farms veal with tomato jam, cippoline onions and prosciutto vinaigrette

BOTH OF US: Cheese plate: Comte Saint Antoine, Fourme d'Ambert, and Flixer

ME: Grand Marnier Souffle (one of the best I've ever had)
DH: Caramelized Banana Gateau

It wasn't just the food that made this night wonderful, but how everyone treats you. Israel, the host, overhead us telling our waitress where we were from, and he came running over to tell us he had recently been in our town attending a wine seminar!

They sent us on our way with a loaf of Date Orange cake that we enjoyed for breakfast a day or two later.

We also had the luxury of spending that one night at the Grand Floridian (which I have reviewed recently on the Resorts board) - a very nice way to spend a special occasion.

It was really a great experience. Go!

Sounds like a lovely evening - I'm glad you enjoyed yourselves and Happy Anniversary!!

BTW - was that foie gras to die for or what? I tried it in October and am counting the days until we go back so that I can have it again. :goodvibes

HI WW!

We chit chatted awhile back on a thread I started titled "let's talk about V&A's" (or something like that!) We will be dining there in May for the first time ever for our 10 year anniversary. I am very excited and loved reading your review.

Was the loaner jacket awful? Did they "loan" it to DH discreetly?

Did you feel the regular menu was plenty of food?

May I ask what "your" song is that the harpist played?

Thanks for your review!:thumbsup2

Oy, yes the foie gras was wonderful - although I feel guilty about doing it, I order it as often as I can.

WLL - the loaner jacket was far from awful (they never are)...it was a navy blue blazer, so he wore grey slacks, white shirt, blue & grey tie - and they ask you your size in advance so everything is fine. This is one of the greatest secrets/tricks we've learned over the years - if we're going on a trip where we have "suit" dinners planned for 2 or more nights, then he obviously brings his own, but for just one night why take up room in the suitcase?

And the regular menu was PLENTY of food - and WAY too much wine :rotfl: !

And if you're under 50, you probably never heard of the song - but it's "Around the World" (Nat King Cole does a very popular version), and it was playing in the elevator the day we met :lovestruc "Around the world, I've searched for you, I've traveled on when hope was gone, to keep a rendezvous, I knew somewhere, some why, some how, you'd look at me, and I would see, the smile you're smiling now...it might have been in County Down, or in New York, or Gay Paree or even London Town, no more will I go all around the world, for I have found my world in you..." Whew, that was embarrassing, glad we don't have sound computers!

Hi Warmwinds, I too spoke to you on that thread about V & A. So great to hear you had a wonderful time on your anniversary. I had no idea the harpist played requests? I will have to remember that:scratchin
I have booked V & A for Aug 17th at 06.30pm and we are doing the Chef's Menu in the main dining room (not under the dome). I have chosen to do the Chef's menu because there are many things on the menu that I have never tried and I have decided to be adventurous this trip and try new things. I have even worked up the courage to have beef served Medium!
Plus being our Wedding, we wouldn't get the chance to have a meal like this again and I like the fact if I don't like something, no worries, there are plenty more things to try.
I have loads of requests too. Do you think I should ask for a table in the corner or something? From the pictures I've seen, there doesn't appear to be much space between tables and as I'm wearing my Wedding Dress, which has a large skirt, I'm worried it will get in the way of the waiters and other customers.:duck:

Hi Summer!

BTW, I want to do the Chef's Table menu in the dining room, also, BUT...we get a 20% discount w/the DDE card ONLY if we get the regular menu. NO discount on the CT menu. I don't mean to sound cheap, but it is killing me to consider NOT getting that hefty discount!

BTW, Summer, I walked around the dining room last month (during the day, when they were closed. LOL, I did not want you to think I stumbled around there while guests were dining) when I was there during a day trip. I did see a few tables that I thought to myself, "Hmmm, I don't think I would like to be seated there." But most of them were far enough apart from the other tables. I remember seeing the table that Warmwinds sat at. I like the idea of seeing people coming and going. I just hope, since my seating is at 5:45, that if I see they are seating me at a certain table I can politely decline and possible suggest another.

Warmwinds-That is good to know about the loaner jacket. Do they hand it to you right as you walk in? I assume they help your DH put it on? That really is not a bad idea at all. Did you wear a pretty dress?

Ohhh, that song is just beautiful! I am not familiar with it, but now I will try to google it and listen to it on the computer. You sang it very well!:goodvibes

And congrats again on 30 years. I love to hear about couples married so long and still enjoying each other.:lovestruc

Summer, since we sat so close to the front, I really didn't see the whole room - but it goes around in a big circle - there are several tables right under the dome, and then tables (like ours) going around the perimeter of that central domed area. Oh, and remember the talk about the acoustics under the dome? Well, even we could hear what one of the couples UNDER the dome was saying...AND...since the host heard what WE were saying from his podium, I suspect ALL the acoustics are messed up because of the circular design of the whole room, not just the dome, so DO watch what you are saying (whisper voices, kids!). But you DO want to be in this main room both because of the harp player and because it is so pretty with the painted ceiling, etc. I didn't go in to the "other" room, but it looked much plainer from just a glance as we walked by.

WWL, this loaner jacket thing is really very simple. The first hostess to greet you is outside the doors of the restaurant in a little ante-area, she's the one who checks your reservation, and when my DH walked up he just said "I think you've got a jacket for me" and she just went and whipped it out of a nearby closet, easy as pie. There were no other people around at the time since we had such an early reservation, but if there were I'm sure the only reaction would have been the other men angry at their wives for making them lug their own :rolleyes2 . Maybe some people are squeamish about wearing someone's else's clothes, and I honestly can't tell you if they clean them between customers :crazy2: but these are NICE restaurants that do this, and we've never had a ratty jacket.

The only thing I will say about the menu, was that I paid 2 supplements, one for the foie gras, and one for the Kobe beef. I love foie gras so often will do that, but I had never had Kobe beef before (and I will admit because of the outrageous price), but I figured, what the hey, I'm only married 30 years once, so we sprang for it...I wouldn't do it again. It was very, very good...but not $80 extra good! Maybe there are some afficianados out there, and that's fine, but unless you know you love it or really, really, really want to try it, I wouldn't bother. It is very tender and delicious, but almost TOO tender (and I got the strip, not the filet) - I like my steak with a little more oomf to it (I'm a NY strip or rib eye gal, not a filet one), and this was too much of a girly steak, if that makes any sense :rotfl: .

Other than that, I would say no matter what is on the menu that night it will be wonderful! pixiedust:

Thanks for your response.

So as I ontend to do the Chef's menu in the main dining room, would I also have to pay extra for the Kobe Beef? I reall would like to try this and foie gras!

Summer, I'm not sure how that works...maybe someone who has done the CT menu will chime in...since they give you EVERYTHING I would assume you do NOT have to pay any supplements - in which case we should have planned it more carefully because that would have been a much better deal :scratchin . But there was also a $30 supplement for the OTHER "Kobe" beef, and another $125 for 1/2 oz and $250 for 1 oz of caviar, and another $25 supplement for Turbot on the fish course, so now I'm really curious how that CT works...

Now I really need to know, I don't like the idea of Caviar but I have decided if it is given to me I will try it. I won't pay any extra as I don't think I'll like it, but it would be great if I can try everything on the Chef's Menu and not pay any extra.

Sounds like you had a wonderful romantic evening, and you made reviews of everything you had, sound so delicious.
Congratulations on your 30th wedding anniversary! We too are celebrating our 30th this trip. Not many people now days make it to their 30th, unfortunately.
We haven't made ressies to V&A though, but Thank You for letting us share in your experience.
:flower3:

Anny, congratulations to you, too! Make sure you get your Anniversary buttons to wear! We got ours at City Hall in MK (to the left as soon as you enter, it is the Information booth) - just go in and ask for them (they also have them for Birthdays, 1st visits, etc)...it is fun to have CM's (and other guests!) wish you a Happy Anniversary when you are wearing it...I thought it would be dorky but it wasn't at all, even my normally reticent husband would say every day "let's wear our buttons again!" :rotfl:

Happy 30th anny!

Hmmm, I would also like to know if you have to pay extra for the supplements if you do the CT menu. Hmmmm.....

I do know what you mean about steak...you and I are similar, I like a little "chew" to my steak. I find the "slightly" chewier cuts have more flavor. I appreciate your input on the Kobe beef because as much as I *DO* want to try it, I think I will skip such a pricey supplemet. I am also thinking I *will* pay for the foie gras.

Nah, we are't squeamish about other people's clothes...I mean, it *IS* a jacket...I am hoping everyone who wore it was wearing a shirt at the time!:scared1: I will let my DH decide. Since we drive to WDW, it really is not hard for us to hang his suit in the car...and he really does not get an opportunity to wear his suit very often, so I am thinking he will probably want to take it.

I just love chit chatting about V&A's. I am getting so excited thinking about it.:yay:

Heheheheh. I had my "ah-OOO-gah!" moment when I saw she had foie gras
on her menu. You know, the sound that cartoon characters make when
their eyes pop out of their heads? That's basically what happens to me
when I see foie gras in dining reports. ;)

Everything on their menu sounded so good, I know I'd have a difficult time
choosing.
