I have a Chrysler PT Cruiser and it is definately the best car I have ever owned. No problems so far, and the one time I did have a problem on something minor, my warranty covered it with no hassles. I really like Chrysler. 
I think you will be very happy with your new car.
There's no reason to ever put 6K into a cheapo old car. It's almost always better to just get a new car at that point.
I have a small car payment on my car. I have pretty decent credit and I got a very low rate and the payment is worth the peice of mind knowing I will have a reliable car for at least the next 8 years (warranty goes up to 8 years).
