Our Seemingly Silly Semi-Illogical Four Day Whirlwind Trip

"What's in your wallet?" :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Yes, I had the misfortune to wait a half hour to ride Maelstrom back in May whilst people bearing fastpasses were able to directly board the Viking ships :sad2:

Moo, you could have gotten a fastpass and didnt? Your once in a lifetime chance?

"Country Pirate Jamboree"----or could it be "Country Viking Jamboree"--that show you saw in Bergen?

My grown-up boys and I love to ride Maelstrom (now you know my guilty secret) just so we can lean over and say "You are not da first to pass dis vay" to each other just before the viking voice says it. I did that to my husband(Mr. Un-Disney) on our 25th anniversary trip in December. He admitted that he had never ridden on Maelstrom, and could we possibly get a fastpass and ride it? (What he actually said was "I've never been on that Norway ride--I would be willing to do that.") I said the line, then the "voice" said the line, and he looked at me in amazement with a look that clearly said "You must be psychic!" (Or possibly "I can't believe you are such a dork that you have the lines on the rides memorized.")

Bringing back great memories! Keep the story coming:thumbsup2

The world has gone back to being white again, but it's still good to be back home. It's nice to sit at the computer without someone sitting behind me wishing I would leave so they can check their email!

Just catching up and loving your report. I especially enjoyed the mexican beach gnats description, as I am an american who did not bargain well on the beach last year. Oh well, it was vacation.

And you have such a way with words. I can understand detroitdads feelings about the inside jokes, because I too do not have as much time as I would like to spend here on the boards, and you are so eloquent and make everyone feel good. Even if you might need to use a time out once in a while. :lmao:

You are awesome. Hope your vacation is wonderful.

:wave2: mikamah: I hope you had a great time in Mexico despite the fact that the vendors got the better end of the bargain. I think tourists seldom come out ahead, so you have plenty of company on that! You had me laughing about the “time out” because it took me a minute to remember the incident you were referring to! Yes, that was funny. Since I feel I “know” the party I put in the time out chair, it was all in good fun, and I think we all had a great laugh over it.

Yay! I'm first! Now I have to go read it. LOL!

Kay! That's why it's Maelstrom....is a FASTPASS????????????

It's not so bad in and of itself...but the fact that after it's finally over you're STUCK waiting to go into/through(please don't STAY for the movie!) the theater.

Great episode!

:wave2: MommyPoppins: And speaking of the Time Out Culprit, here she is! And behaving very well, I might add. No more pork jerky for MommyPoppins.

The movie shows some very awesome scenery, but of course you only want to watch the movie once or twice, not every time you go on the ride, so it’s too bad they designed the attraction so that you must walk through the movie when you finish. We watch it this time since I think we only saw the movie once before, and it was filmed during the era when I visited Norway.

My work is done, do I still have to post.....:lmao:

:wave2: NAB: Yes, NAB, you can’t sneak off now. You did a good job, though, keeping my report from languishing in obscurity on page 2 or 3 while I was on vacation, so thanks again. I am sorry there weren’t a host of new readers helping you with that task, or at least more of my faithful readers posting more, but I probably drove everyone away by telling them in advance I wouldn’t be around.

Thank You for taking us Fjording, Kay!

Did you see the hidden mickey on the viking on the mural in the loading area?
Did you stay for the movie, or walk through? I stayed once. I walk through now.
How FUNNY they played Country Western music in Norvay!

I cant wait for the pictures!

:wave2: UMA: No, I didn’t see the hidden Mickey. Rats! Now I have to go back! Ooops, I think maybe the word RATS! Is like a swear word when used in Mouse Country. :confused3 Sorry, Mickey!

Picture? You want pictures of Norvay? Or my more recent trip? I didn’t find any hidden Mickey’s in Hilton Head, but to keep things on the Disney theme, we did stop over at the Disney DVC resort in Hilton Head and we took some photos there. We stayed there on our last trip to Hilton Head, but I didn’t own a digital camera then. This time we stayed at the Marriott Grande Ocean, which is also a timeshare resort, but it’s right on the ocean, whereas Disney’s is on Broad Creek and the marshlands (also very scenic).

Ok has anyone actually seen someone using the FP on Maelstrom? Are the FP kiosks even open?:confused3
I would consider Maelstrom a take it or leave it ride.
Keep up the good writing Kay!

:wave2: Maine-iac: I’m glad someone else answered your question, because I, too, find it hard to believe that this ride ever has enough demand to require a Fast Pass. Apparently, the answer is yes, though.

Why yes, yes I have :cool1: I have photographic evidence, even.

Kay!!! You forgot to put *spoiler* in your title!!!! :rotfl2:

:wave2: HaleyB: Good to see you, and thanks for the answer to Maine-iac’s question. As for the “Spoiler” notation, yes, you’re right, although all of my ride reviews up to this point have been spoilers to some degree, and in the case of Maelstrom, I think it would be pretty difficult to find much to spoil! ;) (Sorry Maelstrom fans!)

Kay, you are killing me :rotfl2:

But Maelstrom IS a Fastpass!

:wave2: Backstage_Gal: I will let you argue this opinion with Vidar and Thor! :rotfl2:

QUOTE=Minnie_Moo;17374496]"What's in your wallet?" :rotfl:

:wave2: Minnie_Moo: And here is yet another witness to the fact that Fast Passes are sometimes required. And what’s more, you even admit to waiting a half hour for this ride. Absolutely shocking! I see that this ride really does have a loyal following. Or maybe you only waited in hopes of getting some fresh baked Viking brownies. YUM! :rotfl:

:wave2: Hey, a new reader! Hello and welcome! Thanks for sharing your story. I loved that! I can just see you intoning, "You are not da first to pass dis vay" and the look on Mr. Un-Disney’s face. What a riot!

You really got me on the County Viking Jamboree idea. You’re so right. It would have been more appropriate with Vikings than Pirates. Maybe Disney can give that a try and see if it’s more popular than the version with the bears: Country Music Viking Jamboree. I like it! The show I watched in Norway would have been funnier if they had been wearing mixer bowl helmets with horns instead of jeans and plaid flannel shirts!

Okay, now the picture’s I’m including are because the ones I posted from my actual Disney trip are so distant that no one could really see Lowell, and mine was pretty far away, too. I have a close-up of Lowell at HDDR that comes later in the report. So, these are not from Disney (Shhhhhhh! Don’t tell anyone else, and this will be our little secret.) BTW: the foyer in this condo was about the size of our entire room at the Wilderness Lodge. Remember, I’ve told you a million times, I don’t exaggerate! The photo of Lowell is the classic "Lowell on the couch with the TV remote while I'm busy unpacking" photo!

YAYYYY! A face to go with your words!
You are SO purdy! I just love you! Is your hair still long? I'm jealous, it looks so healthy!

Lowell, is posed like every DH in the world as WE pack and organize....FUNNY!:lmao:

Yes, this photo was taken a few days ago at our resort in Hilton Head and I haven't cut my hair since! :rotfl:

Kay, Welcome home and thanks for the new installment! Like you, it takes a lot to make me laugh out loud, but these parts succeeded:

I’m afraid I’ll attempt to say to some burly local guy, “We’re happy to be here and we love your city,” but it will turn out instead, “Your mother eats lard and smells like a moose.”

Having lived and travelled in foreign countries, I can identify with this! Oh the stories I could tell about linguistic mishaps!

I think furiously but I can’t come up with any anti-troll spells. Then I get an idea. Maybe Country Western music frightens them off.

Good idea. I'm glad to hear there might be a good reason for the existence of Country Western music after all! (Sorry, CW fans...)

I mean, really, how fierce can a man look wearing a mixer bowl on his head with horns glued on?

Ha! Well... you know those Vikings are known for their practical side. Notice how they thought to glue horn "handles" on the mixer bowl so they could retrieve the brownies from the fire without burning themselves!

Another fun read, Kay. Can't wait for the next one.

-Iluvsushi

Kay, welcome back!! We missed you lots!!!

As always, you make me laugh like this :lmao:

Great. Nice going. Thanks for alerting the trolls that we’re here.
I'll bet you talk back to the people in movies, too, huh?;)

When they see our small defenseless craft they will surely attack us, shouting, “What’s in YOUR wallet? I have no Capitol One card to fend them off.
:rotfl2:

“Have a Brownie, Thor, I made them myself.”

“Thanks, Vidar, Don’t mind if I do.”

“Ummm. Delicious! Just like Mother used to make.”

“What a nice thing to say! That’s most un-ravening-horde-like of you.”

“Ravening horde, my axe!”
Love the "my axe" line...:rotfl:

To me, there is something inherently funny about both pirates and Vikings. I think Disney could take almost any existing ride, add a pirate or Viking theme, and make the attraction instantly more entertaining. Let’s give it a try:

Viking Family Treehouse...Pirates of Progress...Viking Orbiter...The Hall Of Pirates...It’s a Small Viking...Honey I Shrunk the Pirate...It’s Tough to be a Viking...Country Pirate Jamboree
Great list! You're right. They DO sound more enticing!

How about this one: "The Enchanted Pirates's Birds"

You do know, of course, that Veggie Tales has jumped on the Viking/Pirate bandwagon with "Lyle, the Kindly Viking" (my favorite line from one of their songs; it's a musical..."We vikings storm the seas, we pillage and attack, we don't say 'please', and we never give stuff...BACK!"

(I have to cut this short, because my dd, Bunny is trying to climb into my lap, something about being hungry and not feeling good. Oh no....no more flu this season, please!!!) I'll try to come back. This TR installment was PRIME!

pixiedust: wow! you're good! very, very good!

* you mean, you actually gave your husband a choice ? :scratchin
on what rides to do??? wow, double-dog,wow!

ha! i am going to show my wife what you said....oh, don't worry,
she'll have a ready-made response.

princess: ..even your evil twin..in the pic., is cute! wowser, do
you guys ever double date? just :crowded: me wondering?

* the disney effect..to work its magic, requires families like
yours doing the right things! what happened in 99, were problems
that got me paying attention when i used just blow right by!

one big reason that i have gotten behind reading trip reports, was
us getting our resvs, for the pc cruise..it was mad house!

Yay! Another installment!!!
I love the ocean part of Maelstrom. It's so calming after those SCAAAARRRY trolls!
And I'm so bad at finding Hidden Mickeys - this last time a kid about 10 had to point it out to me.

Welcome home, Kay! Hope you had a wonderful trip. Wow, and you posted a new installment straight away! Loved your take on Maelstrom. I kind of like the ride, but it's not a must see. I'm proud to say I've never seen the film. Shhhhh. I always feel guilty when I walk right through the theater though. Maybe one of these trips we'll stay and see the film. On second thought, nah. I'm sure my relatives who live in Norway would be disappointed with me.

Thanks for more laughs. Your reports always guarantee a bunch of Lol's!!!

Oh. And I'm so in the mood for Brownies now.

Thanks for posting more pics of you and the Mr. You're cuties! The condo looks awesome.

When you got home did Lowell help you unpack?:lmao:

It’s like when I make a new recipe for Lowell and ask him what he thinks of it. He may diplomatically say, “I don’t love it.” That about summed up my impression of Maelstrom: I don’t love it. But to carry the analogy of Lowell’s meal diplomacy further, if he really hated it, he would tactfully say, “You don’t have to make this again.” In the same way, Maelstrom is not so bad that we say, “We don’t have to do this again.”

My husband says the exact same thing!!!!! I love your ability to capture everyday occurences and convey the humor in them that allows us all to realize we have much more in common than we might think.

“Fast Pass, my axe!”

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: This is hands down my favorite line in a TR ever. I officially nominate it to repace "Maelstrom...it's a fastpass!?". I believe that is now at least two references that will become legendary in all future TRs.

Great job Kay!!!!

Holy crappin' crap! This is probably the most entertaining thing I've seen/read this year, and I saw The Departed. Your sense of humor is so dry, yet refreshing. Much like my own, that unfortunately my DW doesn't always get, and everyone knows that once you have to explain a joke, it's no longer funny. The refillable mugs, I have brought back mugs from other AS resorts and no Disney Secret Service Agents tackled me, trying to wrestle it out of my hand, screaming 'he's got a mug!' Thankfully, my mother and aunt ventured to ASMo last October and, lets just say, my family won't go thirsty in August when we go.

After only 31 pages we actually get a look at you two. I always like seeing the people I'm reading about. After all, it helps with the overall visual. Reading this makes me more and more anxious for our trip...why can't August be now? Why can't I jump forward in time and then come right back. There has to be some kind of space time continuum rift I can exploit!

Ahem...I'm going to go back to selling insuance now.

Hi, everybody! Thanks for the responses so far. I thrive on feedback! ::yes::

Ha! Well... you know those Vikings are known for their practical side. Notice how they thought to glue horn "handles" on the mixer bowl so they could retrieve the brownies from the fire without burning themselves!

:wave2: iluvsushi: Ha, handles! I like that! I bet the horn material doesn’t conduct heat as much as metal and would be as efficient as wood for handles. Thanks for the laugh.

Kay, welcome back!! We missed you lots!!!

:wave2: bunnysmum: Yes, Enchanted Pirates’s Birds sounds almost plausible. Maybe they produce “pieces of eight” at will.

I’ve never heard of Lyle the Kindly Viking, but there you go: further proof that the ravenening horde image is inaccurate and unfair. ;) Don’t you think the lyrics to that song sound a lot like Pirates of the Caribbean? Somehow, I would think that pillaging and attacking don’t sound very “kindly.” And neither acivity is one I would teach to children, but I’m not a child rearing expert!

:wave2: Lil’ Grumpy: Fortunately, Lowell and I are so much alike that we usually like to do all the same things, (except watch John Wayne movies). I do give him a choice about rides and attractions even though I am the official Activities Director. As for my “evil twin” being cute, thanks, and hold that thought for the next episode . . . you’ll get an extra chuckle out of it.

:wave2: celerystalker: You know how it is once you leave your childhood years, in addition to growing a bit far-sighted, the Hidden Mickey vision starts to go, and you need bi-focals and sometimes hidden-Mickey-focals! I think they sell hidden-mickey-focals in all the gift shops.

:wave2: SunKat: I managed to post a new segment right away only because I had written it before we went away! You have relatives in Norway? Cool! Do they like Country- Western music? Sorry to stir up your craving for brownies. :) The Hilton Head condo was one of the nicer timeshares we’ve traded into. Once you get used to condos, it’s so hard to go back to just a room, even with just the two of us. Sometimes I get up early and go out in the living room to read. I love having a laundry room in the unit to dry swimsuits and towels, etc. There are just SO many conveniences. Now and then Lowell helps me unpack but usually I end up doing it, and ditto for the unpacking when we get home, but he does all the driving while we’re on vacation and other chores that sort of make up for it!

Great job Kay!!!!

:wave2: Princess Tinkerbell: Thanks for the very nice compliment about my writing.

On the axe line, believe it or not, at first I was stumbling around with the exclamation: Fast Pass, my ???? shield? Naw, spear? Naw, and then the light bulb came on: DUH, axe! It’s perfect! Only I was a tad worried that it sounded enough like something else that it might get censored! But I thought it was such a funny line that I wished the Tag Fairy would find it. I’m glad you and others liked it as well!

:wave2: DisneyGuy758 aka Andre. Thanks for reading. The most entertaining thing you’ve seen or read all year? That is high praise, indeed! Thanks!!! I never gave much thought to including photos of us. I guess I’ve read plenty of reports, like Zzub’s that included no personal photos. I know what you mean, though, that it’s fun to be able to picture the people as you read about their adventures. If you find that space time continuum rift, let us know, because there are a bunch of eager people here that would be happy to tag along with you. I’m wishing for the day when modern science develops teleporter technology. Can you imagine how great it would be if you could just beam yourself over to WDW for the weekend? I’d even go just for an afternoon! Maybe the Imagineers should start working on that. Think what it would do for ticket sales. I bet annual pass sales would soar!

Welcome back Kay! You kill me, fast pass, my axe!!:rotfl2:

The pic of Lowell in the classic DH pose was great as was your pretty pic!

Thanks so much for posting. I hope your life has smoothed out some these days. I always love to hear from you. You're such a faithful reader.

You know, there are a few people I have been wondering about. MP2002 never wrote to say they are back from vacation and still reading. I hope they're still out there. :confused3 And last I knew medicgirl911 was braving being fired for reading my report while working in the ER. :scared1: blossombird lost her job and was job hunting. I hope things have worked out on the job scene. :cheer2: There are quite a few people I haven't heard from in a while like wvgoofyfan and barndweller etc. You're all like my second family. I hope you're still out there and doing OK. :thumbsup2

Sometimes I do not know what gets into me. I stumbled onto this trip report and posted WAAAAYYYY back on page 1. Imagine my surprise to find that it's grown to 31 pages and if I'm not mistaken, we're now on the day after that first post. :rotfl2: The mark of a fantasticly descriptive TR.

And I had to add...when dd was 8, she pointed out to me that on Spaceship Earth you go forward into the past and backward into the future--very strange indeed. (We hate the backward part, it makes my neck hurt!) Of course, she also pointed out that the burning of Rome smells like hot dogs which is now our standard Spaceship Earth joke. She's always been an observant child. :rotfl:

Now that I'm all caught up, I'm looking forward to reading more. I'm off to rest my eyes now.

Hi Kay - I have been busy and gotten a little behind reading your TR, but just wanted to let you know that I am still here reading since you seem to think some of your readers had disappeared LOL! *waving* still here!

That was a terrific installment. Maelstrom turned into one of our worst experiences at WDW. My dd5 who loved Star Tours, Soarin and many other "big kid" rides was terrified by the trolls on this ride. She was sitting in the seat behind me with her uncle and actually tried to climb over the seats to get to me. Then we go into the movie and its loud and there seemed to be a lot of axes. Needless to say, I grabbed a trembling 5 yo and got out of there ASAP. Disney sure does know how to scare the bejeezus out of a kid.

Can't wait for the next chapter!

I'm still here too Kay! Just very busy but still reading when I can! I loved all your suggestions for how to put more Vikings and Pirates into the attractions! Bring on the next installment and welcome home!!
