Thought I’d share our “Reach Out and Touch Someone” story in Old Key West.

My wife and I went on a last minute Non-Disney (gasp) cruise this past March to escape home and winter and save our sanity. For the first time in a long time, we left our darling daughters back home with friends and did a twosome vacation. They were a little apprehensive about us leaving, (the whole travelling after 9/11 thing).

We came up with the idea of scheduling a “web cam” encounter in Key West. We had found the web-cam site for Mallory Square and since we knew when the ship would dock, we planned for a web-cam rendezvous at 9:00 a.m. in Mallory Square. Our daughters were with friends, and we got the link for the site and selected the meeting point.

At 9:00 a.m. we found the spot, dialed up our daughters on the cell phone and stood facing the camera. Although it was a silly, simple exercise it was a real hoot hearing the shrieks and hollers from Kaitlin and Carly, some 2000 miles away amidst the snow banks as they sighted their Mom and Dad, waving to them live, and in person, in sunny Key West.

I goofed around with some various poses for the five second refresh as we talked. The armed forces guys with guns at side, patrolling the checkpoint behind us, were an interesting backdrop and I’m sure they thought we were nuts waving at apparently empty balconies of the hotel where the camera is located.

So, if any of you folks want a more personal touch with friends and family back home (or if you just want to rub it in a little) the logistics aren’t too complicated. When we are there for our cruise next year, my daughters want to do the same thing with Grandma, only this time I think we will use the streaming cam on Duval Street where we can get closer to the camera.

The silly things that make a vacation special

Dave, I have often thought of doing that!!!!! I always check out the webcams in Key West and thought how much fun it would be to wave to friends back home on the cam.

Now that I know it can be done successfully, I will give it a try on out next cruise!!!!

Thanks for the cute story.
