Cast of Characters: Bonnie (me!) 43, obsessive trip planner
Shane (DH) 45, just rolls with my trip plans!
Shayna (DD) 18, obsessed with all things Disney. Going to university in the fall
Ben (DS) 15, who states that if he has to hug Mickey one more time, he’s going to scream, but I think enjoys himself more than he cares to admit!
Jarrett (DS) 13, who doesn’t really care where we go as long as he isn’t in school!

Day 1:

We traveled by car from Southern Ontario and left on March 11 at 2 a.m. There had been much discussion about when to leave, do we drive right through, etc., but I won out on that one and convinced DH to do the trip in two days instead of driving straight through. He wouldn’t be good for anything when we got there and that wouldn’t be fair to the rest of us who would be psyched for all things Disney!

We drove 16 hours the first day and the final 6 hours on the Saturday, arriving at POR around 2 p.m. I can’t describe the thrill of feeling the temperature climb as you head south, only to step out of the car and feel the Florida sun shine down on you! Can’t put a price tag on that!

We had stayed at Pop last year, but this year wanted to stay someplace a little more quiet. We had stayed at POR when it was Dixie Landings and were happy to return again all these years later.

I purposely hadn’t gotten my hopes up for any particular requests except that the room be non-smoking. We had a short wait at check-in and a wonderful CM helped us get organized. I asked about staying in Building 14 and she said I could do that but the room wasn’t ready yet. I was hoping to unload the car, so I asked about another building. She suggested Building 15, renovated room and when I saw on the map that it was closer to the parking lot, I jumped at it! Sent the rest of the family to the car, and I headed out on my own to find the room. Trying not to hope for too much, I set out…second floor…looking at the room numbers…see a corner room…not our room…thinking it will just be along the side…moving along…then realizing that in fact we got a corner room! Yeah! 1569! Beautiful room, great location! Our first bit of Disney magic! :Pinkbounc

The renovated rooms are lovely. Beds are great, theming is wonderful. I know it’s been said, but the grounds around POR are beautiful!

We unloaded, unpacked, and headed to the food court for our refillable mugs. I must say that I noticed a smaller selection of food items at POR compared to Pop, but it really didn’t matter much because we didn’t eat any meals at the food court.

We grabbed our swimsuits, and like crazy Canadians, headed to the pool. We really enjoyed the POR pools, both the main and the quiet pools during our stay. Hung out for awhile, and then got ready for our PS at Boma! I had read so many good things about this restaurant and we were really looking forward to trying something different and checking out the Animal Kingdom Resort. Used the Disney transportation system and I must say we never waited more than 10 minutes during the entire week!

Anyway, we got to AKL a little early and enjoyed walking around and checking out the resort. I was worried that the kids would see a deluxe resort and be disappointed in POR, but in fact, they didn’t like how dark it was and preferred POR! Go figure!

We certainly enjoyed Boma, but I don’t know if we would go again. The food was tasty and quite different than what we’re used to. The prime rib was excellent, the salmon was okay, but unfortunately the ribs were much too spicy for my kids and me. It’s frustrating when your kids’ biggest comment was how tasty the flatbreads were…we didn’t pay that kind of money for them to eat flatbread! Rating overall: B+

After dinner, we headed over to DTD. We always begin our Disney vacations by going here and soaking in all the Disney magic! My DD bought a really nice bathing suit at Summer Sands last year and wanted to check out what they had this year. Lo and behold, she falls in love with another one! Wants us to buy it for her birthday in a couple of weeks, but I convince her to wait and see what she finds at Ron Jon’s Surf Shop in Cocoa Beach the next day. She wasn’t happy, but left the store empty handed!

Made a point of buying a My Little Pony package for our niece for her birthday. Last year we must have spent an hour trying to fit all kinds of things into the Mr. Potato Head box, and this year, the same thing! DH finds it quite a challenge! J

We also decided to buy the American version of Monopoly. Some background here…

When I was young, my family vacationed a lot in the US. My DH’s family is from Pa. We love to travel in the US and have seen more of your country than our own. Unfortunately, it’s not a popular position here, but we love your country and all it stands for. My daughter should have been born an American citizen, because she just loves it there. More than once she has defended the US position in her classes, much to the dismay of her teachers and classmates. She stands alone and is proud to do so! We made it a point to buy a magnetic yellow ribbon for our car on this trip stating “support our troops”. It’s still on the car and we wear it proudly! The way I see it, whether you’re pro Bush or not, it’s still important to let the troops know people care about them. JMHO…

Anyway, we were thrilled to buy the American version of Monopoly and after buying a few more things, headed back to POR by way of the water taxi. Lovely way to travel!

Spent some time walking around the resort and settled in for the night.

I can hardly wait for 16 days to go by and I can be in Disney.......thanks so much for the great start to your vacation

Thanks for the reports. I am enjoying them. Thanks for the little bit about being pro-American. We don't get that sentiment as often as we'd like!

I am enjoying your trip report! Its nice to know somebody up there likes us!

Were all 5 of you in one room? I thought the 5th bed was some kind of small trundle bed thing?

I travelled the entire eastern seaboard as a kid (my dad loved family trips in the car!) IMO we are all the same. I don't dislike someone based on where the live but on how they live. Are they a good person?

It makes me think of all the 'bad' things we read about teenagers in the newspapers. Unfortunately, for every bad teen that gets written up there are thousands of good ones but we rarely hear about them - there not newsworthy.

We just had one room at POR and used the trundle bed. No problem. The kids all took turns sleeping on it and it can't be that much smaller than a regular twin size bed. They slept fine on it!
