Our little thread of BIG Resort Changes~2013 Spring RC installment

Happy Monday, my friends. :grouphug:

Can I ask you expert mommas for your opinion? I need some momma-help. :upsidedow (This is silly stuff, I know... but I'm kinda confused about what to do. I know I can get a different perspective if I bounce this off you guys.)

Miss M, as you guys know, is an only child. I try to keep her "doing things" so she's socializing with other kids. Though, I try not to be pushy about it and try not to load her schedule up with too much stuff. Anyway, she's in Girl Scouts which she loves. She also does an after-school art program which she also enjoys quite a bit. And ... then there's soccer. Although it was billed as "fun" it's actually more competitive than they lead us to believe. This soccer team happens to consist of most of her Girl Scout troop, too. Thing is, Miss M isn't the most coordinated of children. Not to be mean, just honest, she's clearly the least-able player on the team. The gulf between her ability and the other girls is vast. She seems to struggle each game and I feel absolutely awful for her. (Albeit she enjoys sitting on the sidelines and chatting with the other girls.) The bizarre thing is, when she's out in her own backyard playing with either of us, she looks pretty good. Get her on the field with the other girls and she loses all that ability. I don't know what it is -- I do have a strong suspicion that it's the pressure of being around that many other girls (during the games) that shuts her down. I worry she'll start becoming ostracized by the other girls for how poorly she plays. As much as I don't want to mollycoddle her, I'm also loathe for her to become the kid they start to pick on because she can't keep up with the rest of them. She's a sweet little thing and it would really crush her.

I'm torn. I've enrolled her in the next soccer session which starts right when school's back in the fall. Do I keep her in it though clearly she's not "into it" -- just for the social aspect? With hopes that she'll eventually improve? Frankly, I don't want to turn into that parent -- the pushy one who forces their kids to keep at something they don't like. Simply, when it comes to athletic pursuits, she's just not at all keen. (She also takes swim lessons and she likes being in the water and can swim fairly well, but she's more interested in the socializing aspect of group lessons than actually becoming a better swimmer.) However, when it comes to anything using her mind, she's all over it. Drawing, story-writing, building things with her Lego, the like. Adores all creative-minded pursuits. She'd happily sit down and draw for hours and hours. Do I not bother with these sorts of sports-related things and let her try more group artistic activities, which she clearly enjoys? In the end, as with all parents obviously, I just want her to be happy and get into something she actually looks forward to doing.

I don't know if any of that made any sense. I don't know why I worried about this all. weekend. long. I'm sure I answered my own question. Advice is warmly welcomed. :grouphug:

:cool1::hug:

Yeah...I know :duck: but I'm going in July now not August...my AP expires 8/10 :worried:

 Great to hear Wookerina

:dance3:

Talk me OUT of BWI or BC...it'll save some money...I WANT WL....why why why do I do this:confused:

Jeanette let's see.......Hmmm Your going in summer, staying at WL in summer it just feel cooler. Great CL offerings or so I have heard :) Possibility of being able to see the Castle from your room :thumbsup2 Maybe the PAs can will be chosen flag Family and the boat to MK :goodvibes not to mention head over to CR to TTC and monorail to Epcot!

Enough reasons? If not I can come up with more :rotfl2:

What kind did you get? I still want a Canon t4i (or maybe t5i).

That is awesome!! I have been tempted to change down to a mod, but this will be our last WDW trip for a while. I figure we might as well go Deluxe this time.

I'm so sorry you're BFF is having issues. How easy are your kids to deal with at home when you are by yourself? If you can manage them fine when you go places around home, you may be fine at WDW.

I'm sure you have planned a magical trip for them. If you have relatives living in England, you may be the brain to pick for our 20th anniversary trip. I would love to go to England, but I'm afraid to travel to another country and it not be a guided tour thing. Then again, I really don't want to do a guided tour, especially since a guy we used to play WoW (who was from England) suggested against the guided tours.

You should go. I'm sure you'll have a magical time.

I would love to have groceries delivered, but I'm not sure if there is someone that does it in our area. We go through a lot of bottled waters, and buy the 2 1/2 gal, 1 gal, and 20-something oz bottles.

Grats!!!

I'm having the same issue. Even though I am happy and excited about staying at the AKL, I keep thinking about the WL and how much I love it.

Well, Saturday we took the DSs to see the new Star Trek movie, and we all loved it. The soundtrack was amazing!! After the movie, they dropped me off at my sister's house to fur-baby watch. I slept on the couch, which would have been fine if the Irish Wolfhound hadn't thought that since I was on the couch, I could let him out to go potty about every hour through out the night. Plus he kept scaring me. He would lay in the kitchen, because the tiles were nice and cool. I was watching ghost shows. The only lights I had on were the lights in the guest bathroom (which is between the livingroom and master bedroom) and the light in the room with the washer and dryer (which is near the garage). I would see something big moving out of the corner of my eye, get scared, and realize it was just Clancy walking to the back door. When I did sleep, it was with a Beagle snuggled between my knees. Yesterday, we got to the Con late, like probably 1 PM. I had left the barcode print out (that I needed to have to exchange for our wristbands) at my sister's house, but they were able to look my purchase up online and gave them to us. We didn't get to see any of the Q&As, but we did get several autographs. We got Brandon Routh (Superman in Superman Returns), Brent Spinner (Data, in Star Trek: The Next Generation), Jasika Nicole (Astrid in Fringe), and John Noble (Walter in Fringe and Denethor in Lord of the Rings). I thought I like John Noble before, but now I LOVE him!! He's such a nice man. I went through and got his and Jasika's autographs for myself and then convinced the DH to let me get his autograph for my mom. Since it had been less than 30 minutes, he remembered us and I told him I was getting one for my mom that couldn't make it due to back issues. He seemed like to was actually concerned and asked several questions about her and her back issues. Plus he was super funny!! I could have easily talked to him all day. Now I just have to (not so) patiently wait for the information on the next Con in October.

Wookie I bought an Olympus Pen! I been wanting one for a couple of years but when it first came out was around $600. Now 2 years later I was able to pick it up for $299. I use to love my SLR but it was a pain lugging it around back then the body and lenses were really heavy. By time the DSLR'S came on the market I went back to simple Kodak P & S 1 MP. I bought a Fuji Bridge in 2009 but found it heavy at the parks. I also ave a small GE touch screen and my Oly P&S but the pen is small, light with interchange lenses so I can once again play with the aperture and shutter speeds. Can not wait to get some nighttime shots of the Poly!

missoutandabout:hug: I would ask Miss M. Honestly, I let them take the lead. I pushed the boys into sports, to get them into an activity. DS21 could care less...but once he hit middle school, he re-enrolled. DS12 hated football and didn't have "skills" but now he loves art and drama so that's his thing. Soccer in our town is very competitive and one of the neighbor girls HATES it, her mom won't let her quit. So my thing is, let her choose, if she likes going cool. If not, she can see her friends in GS and she will be fine! My kids love play dates and hanging at home, plus they miss me when I am at work. Part of me feels like I am cheating them out of extracurricular activities...but they don't want to go to practice and games...they are content running around the yard with each other and their friends. HRH just this year joined orchestra and chorus...which is plenty for her...speaking of CONCERT TONIGHT

Not silly BTW

Miss I know these days the importance of being involved in sports is advocated for girls as well as boys but if it is not something she is really interested in I would let her give it up. Maybe there is a sport she would enjoy more? Tennis perhaps? I see no benefit being involved in any activity which leads to low self esteem.
When I was young life was so much simpler boys played sports and us girls jumped rope or played Barbies :rotfl:

Miss, my kids were not sports-abled. From what Im reading Miss M most likely enjoys being with her GS buddies which is what may draw her to wanting to play soccer with them in the first place, but self confidence may be lacking. As Pas posted ask Miss M outright and reassure her that even if she elects not to do soccer she will still be able to see her friends outside of GS (perhaps offer to to bring her to watch some games?) Clearly her abilities, talents and interest are centered in the creative outlet. :flower3: Do you have a summer program for theater and the arts? She may love something like that. Also our HS offers Continuing Education Classes on saturdays for kids ... classes have included arts, painting, drawing, cartoon/animated techniques, theater, etc. Usually these are offered in the school year. Miss M can still do soccer, perhaps socially (when friends are over for play dates. The YMCA offers non-competitive programs/classes for soccer as well as other sports (maybe an option?).

Also, would Miss M like to try dance or gymnastics?? Great for kids her age, she may really enjoy it. :) Sam did both -- each for 2 years from 4-8 and really like it... even my hesitant little girl was excited to perform at the recitals!! Camps are in the summer, but you could enroll her for the fall and not do soccer...:)

My DS did not enjoy the competitive sports (didnt even last a season of soccer)... he lacked confidence and didn't like playing sports competitively. He was like Miss M& legos, drawing, painting, reading, etc. Sam also tried soccer and while she did it 2 years, it was really because of her bff Carlie. And Sam was the slowest and had the least ability on the teams. Bless her she gave it a try!

Pas, you may have noticed I didn't make the change to CSR on the RC list ... had a feeling another RC may flip it...:goodvibes WL CL is a nice fit... near the castle, you all love the resort. :cool1: PAS ... step away from the computer!! :rotfl2:

Pas/Marie...DIVA trip... have been mulling that around in my head... as you say Pas the Dec trip is partly the reason ....heck I'm not even sure what we are doing this summer!! :goodvibes Need to get some stuff squared away... will get back to you both!

A big HELLO to everyone!! Have not had a chance to comment on what I've missed over the weekend...will go back and get caught up...:)

We have a Fuji Finepix S3280 right now, and I hate the shutter speed. There were so many times at the Con yesterday, that because of the shutter speed, the DH missed getting a lot of cool pictures of people's costumes. Either they would turn and walk away, or someone would step inbetween David and the person. I carried it in the parks last year and didn't have a problem with the size. It was the first time I took anything other than a p&s. We actually got really quick at putting it in the bag my mom made for it, that we kept in the backpack when it started raining.

Happy Monday, my friends. :grouphug:

I would ask her what she wants to do. As long as she's still enjoying some part of it, I would continue to let her do it. When she isn't enjoying it, take her out.

The rule my DH and I have for our DSs is they have to do an extra-curricular activity in school. They don't have as many options in middle school as they do in high school. They both tried band, but neither liked it. Joey loves playing football, but isn't stressed about being a starter on the A team. The rest of the sport at the middle school level are at a try-out basis to make the team. Football isn't, so JM plays that. Since there are so many boys that try out, if you haven't been playing that sport since you could walk, and played it in every little league there is, you have no hope of making the team. He's not into football because he actually has to get off of his rear and move. Until he has more choices of extra-curricular activities, he's stuck with it. However, we tell him as long as he does what his coaches tell him to do in practice, wears his uniform the right way at the game, acts like he's paying attention on the side lines, and if the coaches put him in do what they tell him to. If he doesn't play a single down, yet he does everything else, we are happy. He has made some good friends on the team and his behavior has improved being on it.

Thanks so much to all of you. :grouphug: I really, truly appreciate all of your advice. You all are spot-on as usual. :goodvibes I need to sit down and have a talk to her. I haven't taken her out of the fall soccer just yet since I want to have a nice talk to her about it first. (We've asked her before -- because she complains every time she needs to get ready for practices or games -- and she claims to enjoy it but I believe she's just saying it because she thinks it's "what we want to hear." Even though I've told her it's perfectly okay to not enjoy something! :upsidedow )

I've been doing a bit of looking around and I'll sit down with her tonight and show her some summer options which she might be interesting in trying out (drama / acting class and/or pottery).

Hi Miss Out,
Our son loved sports, our daughter not so much. We had a general policy that you needed to be involved in something. It could be sports, scouts, dance, or whatever.
My experience is that soccer can get rather competitive quickly. Sometimes that doesn't happen until older elementary, but occasionally it's even in the younger grades. That's fine for kids who like some competition, but not so much fun if you're there to just enjoy a game with friends. Follow your intuition if you think it might be time to try something new, or take a break. It sounds like she's got some great activities already.
You never know with kids. In high school our son eventually had enough of soccer, and took up fencing. Who knew? He really liked it, and still participates now as an adult.
Hope this helps! :flower3:

Quick heads up for our RCers that are wanting Cali Grill in Nov.
Disney Food Blog is posting reservations will be available from Nov 18 onward. Those of us wanting earlier reservations are waiting, reasonably patiently.

In other news, wonder of wonders, I haven't resort changed in awhile. My dining is set, I'm happy with our resort choices, and I have a ticker. As much as I tend to change, this could be a bit of a RC miracle! Happy days! :dance3:

Yup. :rotfl2:

Not going to be in the room much....quick trip, was supposed to be cheap...yada, yada, yada....:lmao:

Well, now I will have officially stayed at all of the values...and best yet, our girls trip is PIF!!!!!!!!:dance3::cool1::cheer2:

And Miss... My oldest DD really excels at every sport she does...she amazes me. But, she has had sports that she just plain didn't like...such as soccer. Once she decided that she didn't like a sport, we didn't push her in it. Her faves are softball and basketball, so since they don't run concurrently, she has year round sports that she loves!

Our little one tried a bunch of sports and because of her shyness, just did NOT like any of them. We refused to push her into something
that would make her feel uncomfortable. Finally, a year ago, we stumbled upon gymnastics...and she LOVES it!!! She does so well, and will be joining a competitive team this year.

So, I guess, you should ask Miss M what she wants to do, and do that...She's probably the best judge of what she feels comfortable with.

I hope you are able to snag one!! I loved it when we ate there this past June. The DH just wasn't happy that he couldn't wear his hat (despite me telling him he wouldn't be able to).

I just got off the phone with the DH. He went to go into the garage of a customer's home to work on the dryer and he was met with a snake trying to bite him. He informed the owner they had a snake in their garage. The owner grabbed the snake and my DH cut it in half with some garden shearers. He said that luckily, it wasn't a rattlesnake.

Anyway, wish me luck tonight ladies. I need to ask the professor if it's ok I don't come to class on Wednesday. Joey, our oldest DS will have his first JV football game that night and I don't want to miss it. It's just a scrimmage type game.

Good grief! That had to be scary finding a snake in a dryer.
Wishing you loads of luck, I hope you get to go to the game!

:flower3:

Thanks ladies. :goodvibes Much appreciated. Gonna chit-chat with her tonight and see what she wants to do. Now, I'm just hoping she's in one of her talkative moods as opposed to her "So, what fun things did you do in school today? ... Uh, nothing / I can't remember" moods. :rolleyes2

Pas: Hope HRH has a blast tonight at her concert! princess: (What grade does orchestra start out there?)

Ginny: Thanks for the update on the CG reservations mystery. Looks like I'll be holding onto our Artist Point dinner a bit longer then. :goodvibes

MM: So no CR-GW review for me?! AoooooA! :cheer2: for paid in full! Well, at least I can get an AoA review then.

Wookie: :scared: Texans. Y'all are crazy. :rotfl2:

Good grief! That had to be scary finding a snake in a dryer.
Wishing you loads of luck, I hope you get to go to the game!

oh it wasn't in the dryer (this time). It was just loose in the garage and when we went to walk into the garage was on the floor striking at him.

One time, last summer (or fall) he went to a house in the country. It too was a dryer in the garage and it wasn't heating. The DH got the dryer front taken off and the problem was a rattlesnake caught up in it. Luckily, it was caught in such a way, that it couldn't get to my DH, because he said he looked like it was trying to strike at him (but it was in too much of a bind to be able to). When he told the customer, she didn't believe him. He took her out and showed it to her, and told her to call animal control. Once the snake was out, he would come back out and take a look at it, but he was pretty sure once the snake was removed the dryer would work again.

Yes we are.

Which made me thinks of something, since we have so many ladies from different parts of the US (and Canada) I have a question for y'all. Here in Texas, being a Native Texan is something to be proud of, is it the same way with being a native resident of other states?

MarieI've been looking at DL flights....is janet available for a DIVA trip ...only downside would be no Dec WDW trip...but DL :thumbsup2 ugh

PAS - well, yes, that's a downer, but just think, you'd know at Christmas that in just two short months you'd be hitting up DL!!!! With some of your favourite gals :) that's a great compromise! :)

PAS/ JANET! :wave2: OMG!!!!!! would LOVE for you to join the DIVA trip!!!! I have room in my room for a roomie! It would cut your room cost in half! But yes, if you guys decide to come, that would be amazing, I'm sure Linda would be thrilled as well! Almost like a mini RCer meet :) if you guys can swing it, the more the merrier, and I would LOVE to spend 5 fun filled days with you gals! I think this trip will be extra fun..... How amazing for so many women with the same love to get together and just HAVE FUN! :cheer2:
I'll keep fingers crossed you gals can make it happen! :thumbsup2

I am certainly proud to be a New Englander born and raised!!!!

Hmmm...I am not sure I'm extremely proud to be from Illinois necessarily, but I will claim the Midwest in general. :-)
