We are now home from what might have been our last-ever stay at BWV. We have hit the likely end of an era, the purpose behind our DVC purchase. Our favorite tech conference, drawing us to visit Orlando every January since 1996, appears to have reached its natural conclusion. After a great run of 11 consecutive BWV stays we said, "Farewell!" to the Conf Spaces of the Dolphin/Swan/Y&B and our rooms at BWV.

So now things will get interesting. We are quite uncertain as to how our points will be used going forward. Having no 'plan' we intend to sit on them for 2-3 years to see how things play out. Will we max out our banking limits? Will we find sufficient use from the Grand Cal for "last minute" stays? Will we rent them out through David? Will we splurge with EOY trips to Aulani? Glad to have options ...

I agree with you! If you sell you will probably make a profit on the sale. If you rent you will make a profit over MF's. If you bank your points there are no extra fees. You can switch to other Disney resorts with no extra fees. What other timeshares can you do that with?

It's funny how things change for all of us. I said to my wife the other day, 2042, based on our current number of trips (about one every two years) means we only have about 12-13 trips left. Is just seems like so few. I can see us doing more trips, shorter, perhaps paying cash for rooms, but I can't imagine only 12 more trips. Of course, that's assuming that at 87, I'll still in the picture....so morbid. LOL.

LOL, oh don't open that can of worms. We've done very well with our other past and current timeshares. DVC is neck-in-neck with the our "least favorite" of the bunch. ;-)

Thanks to each of you for your encouragement. I hope to find a really good reason to hang on to the points! (At present, the voice in my head says, "Sell! Sell! Sell!")

EDITED TO ADD:
I thought of a way to use our points! If y'all don't mind ... I plan to compile a list as a 'reminder to self.'
  • Thanksgiving in NYC. We used 200 DVC Points for 6 nights at the Manhattan Club over Thanksgiving 2013. I wouldn't mind repeating that trip.
  • Flower & Garden show! I've been wanting to do this in the past -- perhaps F&G can, going forward, be an EOY visit?
  • Intentionally stay at each DVC property. Currently outstanding from that goal: Poly; Grand Floridian (had a reservation once but cancelled it); Hilton Head; BVC (although we've stayed in the Hotel rooms some years for the conference); BLT. I'd like to revisit OKW for a larger unit type. This goal becomes a "just because" endeavor.

It sounds like a perfect time for you to try other DVC resorts including the ones not at WDW (VGC, HHI, and Aulani) and have a real vacation versus a conference vacation. I think a big part of the fun being a DVC owner is planning the trip. Enjoy!

Thanks again for the encouragements ... I look forward to once again having that niggle, "Gotta go to Disney." ;-)

We do tend to visit Grand Cal ~2x/year for weekends given the short drive from home. We've been to Aulani (once) and VB several times. My favorite WDW property for non-conference travel, for now, is AKV but I'm thinking it may be a few years before we return to WDW. Of course, one good airfare sale could quickly change my mind ... even if we don't visit the Disney parks. Perhaps we'll go back to renting a car (wow, when did we last do that?!?) and visit other sites. Hmmm, that could be a possibility, too. THLE has advertised some interesting speakers or special events, such as free entrance after 6p on 2/14 for a Guy Penrod concert. Hmmm, with a little more notice, that would have been fun to visit!
