Our Horrible Disney Vacation - LONG

We were ther 12/7-12/14. DD8 on 12/13 (her b-day) threw up all over herself on the buss back to Poly from DD. Half made it in the bag, the other half-not so much. She was crying and embarassed. Most of the people on the bus were yelling at us and making awful remarks to us. VERY un-Disny like behavior:) She was sick the whole night and following day. BOTH vomiting and the other were going strong:mad: Housekeeping had to come and change the linens on the bed once. It was no fun trying to get her home on 12/14. She had dry heaves, and our flight left at 5 pm to Philadelphia. Surprise- there was a commuter plane accident in Philly, and the airport was closed. Our plane circled the airport for 30-45 min. I kept thinking of Die Hard 2. We finally landed (with DD still getting sick) and needed to wait 45 min for the gate to be brought to the exit. Baggage was another 30 min, so, We got home with a sick child, 8 days of laundry (all I washed on the trip was now soiled from the illness). The bright side is the first 7 days were wonderful and fun filled.:flower3:

Who yells at a sick child??:confused3 That's awful!

I haven't had a stomach bug in 20 yrs but our trip 2 years ago was that time!! I thought it was food poisoning, simply because my food tasted a little off, then 12 hrs later, blech!! Plus our 8 yr old, 18 mth old, and dh never got sick. Anyway, I feel your disappointment. You save and daydream all year, then blech!! However, it's the only time any of us was sick. I hope this was a one-time thing for you. Travel will get much easier as your kids get a little older too.

The exact same thing happened to us in September...:sad1:
DD (2) and DS (3) got sooo sick.
I hope it's something you can't get twice because we all had it.
We spent four days stuck in our room.:sad2:
I spent a year planning the perfect trip and then that.:headache:
I can't wait to go back, though...
maybe next year...

So sorry you went through this. We have experienced a seriously ill infant and a hospitalization in Orlando while at WDW - very scary.

We would never travel to WDW during cold and flu season, but it definitely sounds like there is a serious virus floating around WDW as these boards have been full of illness reports as of late. I just checked the CDC Flu Outbreak map and it shows sporadic cases for Florida as of last week.

I feel badly for people going to WDW at this time of year, but it comes with the territory of cold and flu season. Throw in an airplane (you could have been infected on your flight down and then you more than likely may have infected others on your flight back home) and it's not good. The pediatric specialists who took care of us told us that strep throat and rotavirus cases peak in March, but they also told us that WDW is full of viruses most especially during cold and flu season so they don't recommend that people with infants or small children visit during this season at all. This time of year at WDW, although beautiful due to the holidays seems to be a breeding ground of viruses that all of cold weather visitors seem to spread - crowded airplanes, elevators, monorails and buses with coughing and vomiting guests, makes for terrible situations as you described.

This year sounds particularly bad though - hopefully you and your family are on the mend and will get to experience WDW again someday!

Happy health to you all , Tiger

I am so sorry that you all went through that!! I can understanding feeling distraught like everything was ruined.

We are here now and planned this trip with my parents for an entire year. Lastnight at 2am my father and 7 year old daughter starting vomiting bad, every 45 minutes... it was coming out both places for my dad. My dad and mom traveled by airplane on Sat to WDW and we drove from SC. They didn't arrive until Saturday night while we were here at noon. My son complained of hi stomach hurting today and then all of a sudden on the bus this afternoon he vomited on my husband. I stayed at the hotel with my daughter. My Dad and daughter have been so sick all day. We actually thought food poisoning because it came on so suddenly, but I am not sure. I don't know how my Dad could have gotten a bug and just my kids... My mom said that my Dad hasn't been this sick ever and he hasn't thrown up like this in over 25 years. :guilty:

I feel so awful for them and hope tomorrow is a better day. And I PRAY me, and my mom and dh are "safe".

We've been to WDW 8 times in the last 3 years and never once got sick. 5 of those times were during "flu and cold season" and never once an illness. I guess it was our turn. :sad1:

I hpe your family gets well soon and you are better before the holidays.

Well that pretty much sums it up - we just got back last night, and I've never been so happy to be home in my life. Here's what happened....

First of all, the airline pushed up our flight to Disney up an hour (I found out the day before we left), so that meant that we had to get on the road at 3am. We weren't to happy about that, but hey, it meant more time in Disney, right..... NOPE!! We sat on the runway (with a 2 & 3 y/o) for an hour and a half because they lost the gas slip, and couldn't take off because of it (they couldn't prove that the plan had gas).
So anyway, we finally get to our hotel and all is fine - we were early, so we didn't have a room, but no big deal, we just checked our bags and went to the MK. Everything was great for the first 2 days - DD3 was a perfect angel (total opposite to her at home) though DD2 was very difficult (total opposite to her at home). She didn't want to go on any busses or boats, and made me carry her everywhere - I couldn't even go to the bathroom without her.

On our second or third day at MK, DMIL left with DFIL all of the sudden - without explanation. Now, you must know that DFIL has Lupus, so if he has to leave somewhere, its something serious, so DH was nervous about him. Well, he ended up staying at the hotel for 2 days with dihreah and vomiting every 30-45 minutes (usually at the same time :sad2: ).
Neither we, nor my in laws can afford a Disney vacation every year, or even every 2 years, so losing 2 days out of 7 was devastating. Everyone else was OK though, so we kept going without them.
Finally after the two days, DFIL is better, and my brothers and their families (they live in FL) came and met us in DHS - we all had a great time. I road ToT twice - that is the best ride ever!!!!

After spending the whole day there with them, we said our goodbyes, they went back to their homes and hotels, but we went to see the Osbornes lights which while they were beautiful, you could not move in there, and I would never do it again.

Anyway, we (myself, DH and DDs) had planned to go to Epcot after that, so got on the bus back to our hotel to get the connector.... when it happened. All of the sudden, DH wasn't feeling well. I threw all of the stuffed animals and purchases out of our bag just in time for him to vomit into it while riding on the bus (while apologizing to everyone around us!). I yelled to the bus driver to go to POFQ before POR because he was throwing up (if you don't know, POR has 4 stops, while POFQ only has 1), but the bus driver just yelled back "NO" and kept going - nice! I called and complained about it, and they gave us two fast passes - yeah, as if we were getting on any rides!!!!

So we get back to the hotel where DH proceeds to vomit and have dihreah every 20-30 minutes (and you guessed it, at the same time!) for the next 18-22 hours - and I swear, this is no exaggeration at all.

Finally, he got over his illness, and it was the kids turn. They weren't quite as bad as DH or DFIL, but we the last 4 days of the trip (out of 7) were totally ruined because every time we thought they were OK, they were throw up right as we were leaving. And the cherry on the pie of my week - DD2 screamed the entire 1 1/2 hour flight home - yeah, we were not popular on that flight.

But, now we are home, and DD3 is laying on the couch complaining that her belly hurts.
I just can't believe that we have been planning this trip for over a year, and it was totally ruined! I know in the whole scheme of things, a ruined Disney vacation is rather small, it just bothers me that we spent like $4000, missed work (I'm part time, so I didn't get paid at all) and just lost a week of our lives because of this. I just keep thinking to myself, if I had only booked it for the week before or after, probably no one out have caught this bug, and this would have never happened - its all my fault.

But I have to look on the bright side of things, we did get to ride IASW once, and many other kids rides. I got to go to DTD and get 3 (brought 2 home) custom made Mickey shaped rice krispie treats. We also were on DDP, and hardly used any of our snacks, so we got 12 regular chocolate dipped Mickey head rice krispie treat for DD3 to take to her classmates and teachers today. What else.... all Christmas ornaments were 40% off, so we got a lot of them for not a lot of $$$ including a tree skirt, which is something I've always wanted. T-shirts were also 40% off, so I got two..... that's about it.

Hope everyone else has a better vacation than we did - we are already planning the next one though - for 3-4 years away, and we are going to stay at either a monorail resort, or the Boardwalk (my fav). No more moderate for us - to far away and to much waiting for busses and such. So anyway, its back to work and school today - yippee!
Sorry about your trip.

Just something that struck me after reading yet another trip report of guests throwing up on buses. Perhaps people need to rent a car during this WDW illness outbreak. It seems pretty apparent to me that there is some type of illness outbreak at WDW right now, so I would seriously consider for those going down within the next few weeks, to rent your own car that you can disinfect and then drive to parks without other people being sick in your vicinity and spreading more germs. I absolutely would not be on public transportation of any kind during this outbreak. Yuck!

Happy health to all, Tiger

Oh my! So sorry that you had such a rough time! :(

We went through a stretch where it seemed that every trip someone was sick. We are very fortunate that we go a couple times each year (ap holders and now dvc owners) but it still stinks when someone is sick.

Dd (now 9) went for the first time when she was 15 months old. She caught some bug and when we were in EPCOT near France she threw up all over herself - we still joke about that with her. She ended up at Celebration Hospital and was diagnosed with a double ear infection. (She was already on antibiotics due to kidney reflex but that didn't help so she had to get the shots - ugh)

Another trip I found an engorged TIC in her head! (She had her head in my lap on the boat from HS to the YC and that is when I saw it) Had to go in the walk-in clinic near dtd for that one. Dr. there had never seen one so he called all the other docs in to see. They froze it and got it off - it was gross! But then she essentially had a hole in her head so could not go swimming the rest of the trip. We were lucky she didn't have any other reaction.

Another trip dh caught some nasty virus and we ended up having to call a dr. up to the room to prescribe him some antibiotics. After a couple of days he was much better but the kids were young at the time so I took them out alone so dh could sleep.

We were staying at the YC a couple years back when the cruise ship had an outbreak of Norwalk virus. The YC is one of the places people stay before their cruise so we figured dd picked up the stomach bug there or any place where infected people were. I spent most of the trip in the room with her while dh took ds out to the parks.

I have IBS so my trips are always different, depending on how my stomach reacts to things. Because of that we all know where all the bathrooms are at each and every park.

This last trip ds was 13 and he had some nasty stomach bug for a couple of days and was vomiting. He lucked out and got it after we saw Cirque du Solei (sp?) but he never got to the MK that trip. It was in august during the tropical storm so that was a lot of fun also.

There are other tales and when I think of them I can't believe that we continued to go! Seems there was always someone sick.

Hope you can make plans to go another time. I honestly don't like going this time of year due to all the sicknesses that seem to be there.

Jill

Hi,
I think I pressed the wrong quote button. I'm replying to MickeyMomofThree . We are in Rush, right near the train museum and, unfortunately, the state school Industry! Nice to hear from a local.

I always worry about us getting sick on vacation! Our last trip to Disney wasn't quite as terrible, but my DD got quite sick. She just turned 1 while we there, and couldn't keep any food down and had terrible vomiting. After two terrible days, we finally took her to an urgent care center. She had a double ear infection that was so severe that we couldn't put her on a plane. (We had no idea she had an ear infection since she never grabbed her ears or anything like that.) We were supposed to have her ears rechecked before going home to make sure her eardrums weren't at the point of bursting, when we got a call from my mom in NY that my dad was in the ICU in critical condition and not expected to make it. So, we took our chances with our DD and ended the trip a bit early to get home to see my dad. Luckily, after over a month in the hospital he did survive.

Things happen and it stinks when they happen on vacation! But, luckily for you and us, everyone turned out OK in the end.

been there done that but was on a solo trip meeting friends :scared: I wanted to go home early but was too sick to pack :(

Getting sick like that is another reason that I am not a fan of the dining plans. there is no recourse but to lose meal credits when that happens

glad you were able to have some fun in between :)

I am so, so, so sorry that you all had what seemed to be a miserable trip after all of your hard work and earned money spent. I hope that you will find a way to make it back real soon!!!;)

I am so sorry you had such a bad vacation...I was almost worried opening this thread thinking it was a bad vacation because of everything Disney did wrong (which we see too many posts like that).

Anyway----I hope that everyone feels better and that your next trip is what you dreamed of just to make up for this. Getting sick on vacation is no fun---never mind almost everyone in your family getting sick :(

I am so sorry about your trip. We were there the same week as you. We must have witnessed at least three incidents of vomitting!!!:scared1: I was panicked that one of my kids or my DH or I would get it. Luckily, we didn't get that but, my DD woke up on Monday with a temp of 103 and a sore throat. She had been to the pediatrician the week before we left; she wrote us a prescription for an antibiotic because she had fluid behind her ears...it was a just in case you need it kind of thing. Thank God we had it...she was fine within 24 hours. However, I spent the rest of the week worrying about the rest of the family catching that or the stomach thing. Between all of the handrails, bars on rides, serving utensils at the restaurants...I was insane with the purell and the hand washing. Luckily, we didn't have any more illness after Monday but, I would have been devastated if we had...after a year of planning and anticipation...to have what happened to you, happen. I don't know what else to say. I'm just so sorry!!!:grouphug:

We were there for 10 days and just got back December 6th. All 9 of us got horribly ill with that stomach virus and spent most of the trip in the room. DS19months was sick for 5 days! :scared1: We even saw a guest get off the bus at Ft Wilderness and vomit.

We won't get DDP again because of the fact that we had so many credits left over and there is no way to get a refund or transfer them.

Glad you are back home safely. Hope everyone feels better!

We really want to go back every year at Thanksgiving but from all the reports of illness during the winter months I am not so sure that is a good idea.

:grouphug: How awful for everyone that is getting sick.:grouphug:

As for the bus incident I could just image if any kids starting throwing up near us, my own kids, sick or not, probably would have joined in. They have very weak stomaches.

Ok, I'm dreading going to WDW next week!!! I just had Norwalk and don't want to get it again!!!!! I am horribly scared of vomit, vomiting, whatever, and I do not want to get sick like that AGAIN (it was awful when I had it last month). I always carry hand sanitizer and wash my hands religiously so hopefully I'll be all right.

I'm sorry you guys had a bad trip though.

I don't get why people need to write such reviews, disgusting health related issues, its unfortunate that you got ill but look at the bright side, it was only a few days, there are some that have devastating cancers and are sick all te time, disney had nothing to do with your awful trip....it is the luck of the draw......as for the plane, good lord, it happens ALL THE TIME....it is unfortunate but seriously, do you really feel you wasted a week of your life? You took babies to disney, you have to expect behaviors from little ones...............2 year olds want carried!!!!:confused3 Heck, I want carried. As for the bus driver, are you serious? Can you imagine if he changed his route for every ill person or every "issue"? Everyone has an issue at one time or another, bus drivers have routes, they cannot change them as requested. There are just some reviews that are not valuable... :snooty:

Wow!

I find it VERY helpful that *so many people* have reported having the same rotten illness while at WDW. That certainly would be good for me to know, if I were getting ready to go! Sure, it's disgusting and if we were all talking in person it would really be TMI, but here we share pretty much everything, and someone will always find it useful!

And it would be awfully nice if the bus driver could at least just pull over; I had a strong feeling that she wanted to have her family get off the bus so she didn't have to submit the rest of the passengers to that. If someone on your bus were getting ill, would you rather head in your original direction and just deal with the sounds and smells, or would you want to divert a bit and let the ill people OFF? I know which one I'm choosing.
