We set off on what had gone from a holiday to an adventure, a bit of something for everyone. It was mostly successful. :goodvibes

The cast: Johnny_boy, 47, Driver, photographer, internet nerd and father to two exited children, Clare AKA DW, chief packer, re-packer, unpacker, repacking, humming and hahing and organiser. Amélie (my name’s the same in French), age 6, thrill seeker extraordinaire. Johannes, age 4, over excitable wee boy with that legendary red-hair temper.

Our plan was to get up early on Monday 25 July and drive to France and camp for 3 nights, 2 nights 3 days at Disney then a week in the timeshare in Vincennes. This is part 1 – the journey and camping. It’s a bit OT but some people may find it of some use.

We got up around 3.30, car 99% packed, just toothbrushes and things to put it. Quickly dressed, Clare cooked some microwave bacon rolls to keep us going and wrapped them in tinfoil, we lifted and toileted the kids, put them in the car, sun blinds up, blankets over them, Sat Nav on silent (we knew the route but handy for traffic info) and set-off. The plan was they would waken up around 7-8 with the car movement. Amélie slept, Johannes basically asked questions the whole way to the first stop!:rotfl2:

After a quick coffee and muffins/toilet/dress the kids break, we headed down and got as far as South Mimms pretty quickly via the M6 Toll. We live just off the A702 which joins the A74(M)/M74/M6/M6 Toll/M6/M1 etc.so the journey was straightforward. Lunch there was pretty good, we look for Welcome Break as they tend to be a bit better, the chicken and chips is very good and was on the rotisserie when we were there as we were 10 mins early for lunch. We had to wait until they finished the breakfast service.

The next bit to the Eurotunnel over the Dartford Bridge was a bit of a nightmare but we arrived a bit early for our shuttle slot and got on an earlier train and the kids got a bit of a play at the play park before our latter was called. Disapointing shops but I bought spare bulbs. The crossing was quick but I couldn’t figure out how to switch my digital speedo on the car from mph to kmh, the instructions looked straightforward but were wrong, you had to hold the buttons in until the kph appeared, flashed 6 times then it was permanent, not the 3 like the instructions said….:confused3 I got it working at the campsite which was a straightforward 30 minutes from the shuttle.

The campsite In Condette was lovely, a nice wee family oriented place, no drunks, rowdy behaviour and most people in bed by 10.30 pm, no pool or bar. What it did have was loads of kids and a lovely wee play park which my kids disappeared to at the first opportunity and we only saw them when they were hungry or wanted more toys to take along. They had a ball and the campsite included free kids entertainment every night such as donkey rides, horse and trap (the night we left unfortunately), pedal cars to pedal round the campsite and a small games room with pinball, table football, pool and an exercise machine. The toilets were cleaned 3 or 4 times a day and were spotless. The local beach was lovely (I drove along there with an overtired wee boy to let him have a sleep one afternoon) but it was rainy on and off so we didn’t really make it there at any point.

A lot of the people knew each other as they’d been there the last few years and everyone was very friendly, we were gutted when we had to leave as were the kids – Amélie promised her pals she’d be back the next year!

The village was lovely, a nice feel to it with a small Carrefour, small bakery and butcher who both prided themselves on their food, there was a bank, pizza shop and a few other bits and pieces like beautician and hairdresser, all 5-10 mins walk from the campsite.

The only bad thing was it rained overnight before we left so we had to dry the tent off as best we could which delayed us getting to Disney…. More in part 2

Good start. Did you get caught on the road works on M25 on way to Dartford Crossing? We did. I'd say it was the worst part of the entire journey. We were shattered when we finally got to Ashford.

Camp site looks lovely. Nice that they have activities for the kids.

Looking forward to the next bit. popcorn::

We got caught but we were quite lucky that when the roadworks went into contraflow we ended up twice on the side that flowed best. The first time we went into the single contraflow lane, the second someone overtook me as I tried to get over and the single lane ended up blocked for some reason. While the two lanes on the proper side flowed That was the M25 I think though the M1 also had roadworks.

Dartfird was the longest point of the journey for littlest movement but was fine on the way back. Someone I met at the campsite told me to go clockwise on the way back up the M40 but I remembered the traffic through the tunnel looked ok so risked it and it was fine.

Great start popcorn::
Looking forward to the rest popcorn:: Love all the details.
Have you seen the film Amelie? Its one of my favourites. I only discovered it a few weeks after my DD was born, loved the name and we had it earmarked for my 2nd pregnancy but I think going with James was more suitable for DS!! :rotfl2:

Yes her name kind of comes from the film, MIL suggested it as we were looking at names. We were down to Amy and Amélie in the end and Amélie won. There's another Amélie in the school the year above her and they play together occasionally but it's still fairly unusual in the UK though becoming more popular. I bet your DS is glad of James though! It was one of our names for DS but the doctor who had just delivered him said Johannes would be better as it was more unusual so that won.

The kids were on the carousel at the bottom of the Sacre Coeur steps featured in the film at one point but the relevance was lost on them.

The kids are back at school/nursery Wed/Thu so I may have more time to write the rest of the TR in the next couple of days.

Aaah but when shes old enough to be sat down to watch the fantastic film shes named after it'll all make sense! And she'll have the pretty pics to show her connection! Believe it or not it was on the sylabus for final exams for 2nd level french when I was taking my exams! Everytime we watched it our french teacher blushed furiously through the first few minutes!!

He is called James after my grandad, we were very close and he unfortunately passed when I was seven. He was a character and always had a cheeky smile which his namesake definately got through genetics!! I think Johannes is a very strong name. I love the more unusual names.

Just heading over to read the next part :goodvibes

Yes, the beginning of Amelie is very funny, especially the bit when she decides she doesn't like something, her face is a picture!

It's nice that you named James after your Grandad, it's a great way to remember him.

Neither of our kids are named after anyone but Clare is Amelie's middle name so that kind of contradicts that!

Johannes gets all sorts of names, Jo-hannes (the majority of people including us call him that), Yo-hannes from people who realise that's how it should be pronounced (we also call him that), Jo-Jo from his wee pals and us and Jo-boy as well and also Hannes (the name is where Hans and Hansel are derived from as well as John/Jonathon and other variations.

As Clare's friend says, Johannes with the red hair - not someone you'll easily forget!

I meant to mention, as we first arrirved at the park, a young couple asked a guy about the same age if he could take their photo next to the flowerbeds just outside the park, he just shook his head and carried on. I noticed they then tried to take a self portrait photo by holding up the camera. I walked over and asked them if I could take their photo for them - well held out my hand and indicated and they were quite grateful and thanked me afterwards. What a horrible thing to happen to someone I thought but hopefully I made amends.

A lovely start to your holiday - it's a very good recommendation for the camp if people are returning year after year. Love both your children's names. :goodvibes

A fab start to you trip report. Do you have a Renault by any chance? my mum has had the digital speedo on 3 of her Renaults & my dad has only successfully managed to change it KM once, every time after it wouldn't work:rotfl2:

Hi Nikki, it is a Renault, first and last I'll own.... None of the instucrions are correct, it took me ages to get the skinny tyre out once as the instructions for doing that weren't correct either :confused3 anyway, it got us there and back...
