We just returned from a wonderful Disney vacation and I wanted to share our family’s experience with all things Magic Band, Fastpass+, and My Disney Experience.

First a bit about us, I am the vacations guru in our family and, although I have graduated from Excel spreadsheets and binders to Tripit and now My Disney Experience, I am more than a bit of a planner. The goal is not to be rigidly regimented. It is more about making sure that everyone gets to do the things are important to them on their vacation. God know you aren’t getting Anna and Elsa Fastpasses without a little work and foresight. My DW is more than happy to do research and contribute her preferences and desires, but I generally do the “heavy lifting” of putting it all together. DS(10) is a Disney fan who, as of yet, still believes that a Disney vacation is about as good as it gets (except for maybe a Disney Cruise vacations). We have about a dozen Disney vacations under our belts averaging about 10 days each.

We tend to be Rope Drop People even though none of us are Morning People. It is just the easiest/only way to make sure you get the headliner attractions done particularly if you are traveling during busier times. We almost never wait more than 15-20 minutes for a ride, and we were regular users of the old FastPass system.

Now onto our trip: July 1 – 11, 2014. Our first time using the complete My Disney Experience system and our first summer Disney trip in years, (we tend to go in October/November). After reading up on the system here and other places, I was more than a bit nervous. I was envisioning long lines for normally quick attractions, botched ticket assignments and other unspeakable horrors. I decided to just do the best I could and trust that it would all work out.

Now, let’s get onto our experiences.

Magic Bands: These things are awesome! No, they are not perfect, but, let’s be honest here, neither were the magnetic strip cards they replaced. We had fewer technical issues with the bands that we generally had with the cards. Ticket lines to get into the park seemed to go faster than they have in the past even on high volume days. Anyone who did have an issue with the bands was efficiently shuttled off to another Cast Member with an iPad who quickly took care of the issue. Purchasing with the bands was easy (too easy). It was great to be able to go to Typhoon Lagoon or the pool without having to cart along a wallet. There is a technique to getting good quick reads on the band (when they say Mickey to Mickey, they mean Mickey to Mickey), but, after we figured that out, they were quick and easy in almost every situation. In my opinion, these are an upgrade to the old cards in every way.

FastPass+: Yet another resounding success! We rode the rides we wanted to and never waited in a line longer than 15 minutes. After 4 days of being at the park at open, I was able to reschedule any of the FastPasses that I wanted to and this meant that we didn’t have to be there at opening again in order to get what we wanted. YEA! The lines for the normally quick attractions were generally about what we would have expected. Yes, at times certain rides had inappropriately long waits, in my opinion, but that was true before Fastpass+ as well. You could always get a short line for Nemo, Spaceship Earth, Figment, Star Tours, etc. as long as you were a little flexible as to when you rode them and monitoring the wait times from across the park was generally quick and easy (more on that in a minute). I could not change my Fastpass time for Anna and Elsa or Mine Train, but other than that I had really good flexibility even when changing Fastpasses for that day. If you want to ride a lot of rides without lines, FastPass+ will make this easier than in the past as long as you plan a bit ahead. Example: July 3 was a Magic Kingdom day for us. We got there a half an hour before rope drop. In that one day we rode 15 rides (including Mine train and all the other Fantasy Land rides, staked out a great parade spot (2.5 hours of sitting in the Florida sun), had lunch at Be Our Guest, left the park for dinner at 1900 Park Faire (2 hours away from the park), and staked out our spot for the fireworks (2 hours of waiting for the best firework display I had ever seen). We took our time and were never rushing back and forth. You don’t get all that done if you are waiting in lines. I can’t comment on what happens when the system doesn’t work as it should because we never had any problem. On one day our Fastpass for Test Track got rained out and we were given a Fastpass good for any ride in the park at any time. We went back to Test Track later in the day when it reopened and got right on without issue. I do think I would be much less a fan of the system if I did not have a smart phone. Kiosk lines were long. They seemed to move at a good pace, but I would personally not enjoy waiting in a line to avoid waiting in a line.

My Disney Experience: This was the only less than stellar part of the new system. The iOS app worked….most of the time. There were more than a few occasions when it crashed or could not bring up the data I wanted. I had slightly better luck using the mobile version of the website from my Windows phone. There were no terrible issues, but at times it did take a couple of minute s before I was able to bring up the info I was looking for. Nothing was so terrible as to be truly upsetting, but there were probably a couple of times a day where it didn’t “just work”. On most occasions closing the app and re-launching it fixed the issue, but occasionally we just had to wait until it decided to give us the info we were looking for (or use the website).

Miscellaneous: At no point in our stay was there ever a line for the concierge at our resort (Saratoga Springs). This has definitely not been our experience in the past. I believe this is due to being able to do so much for yourself both before the trip and on the go.

Final Thoughts: We had a great time, and had no real issues. I would strongly recommend that you book Mine Train ahead of time. The lines were CRAZY. We would not have waited if that was the only option. If you do rope drop I would book your Fastpasses for later in the morning/afternoon. The lines at Rope Drop are totally manageable. Fastpasses are totally unnecessary early in the morning for the vast majority of rides. This was even true during the very busy holiday week. This also gives you the luxury of sleeping in if you so choose. We have never been able to ride Toy Story Mania without either getting there very early or choosing to wait in a ridiculously long line. With the new system we could sleep till 9 (or 10) and still ride with very little wait! That is a change for the better. Mostly I would say, relax and enjoy yourself! Are there issues? I have certainly read enough to know there can be, but it also seems that the list of happy people is growing. The system will continue to improve. Even in its current state, I would say that it improved our vacation tremendously over the old way of doing things. They took a good thing and made it generally easier, more flexible, and more convenient.

So glad you had an awesome time & thanks for the detailed trip report!

When you say lines "in the morning" were totally manageable, about what time would you put on it? Up through 10:00 am, 11:00 am? Wondering roughly when I want to put as our first FP+ time, not knowing whether we will be rope drop people or not this trip. I think I'd start picking FP the same time regardless of RD - either get there early, ride a lot, then begin needing Fastpasses for rides, or sleep in, immediately start using Fastpasses on arrival.

Sounds like it was a wonderful trip. Hearing good reports is always great and I'm really looking forward to scheduling my FP's in September!

Almost everything was less than a 15-20 minute wait until after 11:00. There were exceptions. Mine Train for example NEVER had what I would call a reasonable wait.

I would say that you should be fine with no Fastpasses before 11:00 as long as you are a bit flexible on what you ride in the AM.

My memory is a bit foggier now, but this is my best recollection of what we rode before 11 on July 3 at the Magic Kingdom.

Buzz Lightyear (2X)
Space Mountain
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
Peter Pan
Small World
Dumbo
Goofy's Barn Stormer
Mine Train (FastPass)

Did you have any problems with MDE prior to your trip? How was scheduling the initial FP+ before you went on your trip?

Glad to hear you had a good experience with all the new technology. I'm excited to get to try it, but as with anything unknown, it's a bit scary, especially when you read all the negatives other people have had to deal with on their trip.

Glad you had a wonderful trip!! Getting excited now to make our Fp+ reservations soon. Quick question . . . After using your 3 Fp+, to get a 4th (and so on) can you make that reservation from your smart phone, or do you have to do that at a kiosk?

For the most part, I would say MDE before the trip was good. Not great. I am not a fan of Disney IT in general, and I think that MDE is probably the best I have seen them produce, but still not quite where I would personally like it to be.

There were times the website was not available. It is slow at times here and there, and I was nervous about my reservations and FP+ right up until I was there and they started working without issue. I am not a huge fan of the interface and how info is displayed, but it did work,

I took nothing for granted. We had multiple ticket types and hard tickets for Harambe nights. I verified with concierge when we got there that all tickets were showing on our account the first night we were there. I also kept a record of all my dining reservation information. Better safe than sorry.

I was not able to do it from the phone. I think there MIGHT be a way, but I didn't experiment too much with it. Honestly, there was enough new stuff for us to see that we really didn't need more than 3 FPs a day. I would have booked Mine Train more if it was available but it never was by 2 or so when I looked.

THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! This is such a great post.........its based on actual events at the parks.......that is "on fact". There is just so much moaning/groaning:headache:, complaining, and whining going on the boards lately regarding primarily FP+, its great to hear that it works! In fact it worked so much that you were able to adjust your trip a bit based on its use.

I loved reading this thread.......thanks again..........so glad you have a magical time!!! :cool1:

Thank you so much for sharing your positive experience! We are headed to WDW in just about a month and I am getting a little nervous about using FP+ and MDE. It made me feel warm and fuzzy inside....and I needed that.

I was in your shoes exactly. I heard enough horror stories to be really concerned.

I finally decided that I would keep records of what I could, verify what I could beforehand, and just hope for the best. What is the worst that could happen? A little bit of confusion over tickets? I had everything I needed to get that dealt with. A lost dinner reservation? This might lead to some disappointment, but I had no fear of starving in Disney. Not the end of the world. FP+ snafu? This would probably be the biggest disappointment, but we would still have a good time. We are fortunate in that we know we will be back. If we had missed something, we would have to catch it on the next trip. I understand that some are not so lucky, but, as it turned out, I think you still would be able to do pretty much everything if you are willing to do rope drop and plan a bit (just like before).

What I saw and heard when I was down there was that the problems are by far the exception.

So, do your homework and expect good things!

Great report...we also loved magic bands and FP+...our kids are older and like to sleep in. Scheduling FP+ starting around eleven allows us access to headliners without having to be at rope drop every morning.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm leaving in 5 days for a 12 day trip with 18 other family / friends and our approach to the parks seems very similar. I'll admit I'm nervous about how all the new changes are going to impact the very effective "strategies" we've developed over the last 15 years. We're planning on handling the parks the same as you (rope drop touring for the first couple hours, fast passes after that, midday breaks), and I'm encouraged to hear things went well.

I do know they released a major update to the MDE mobile app after your trip that is supposed to address a lot of stability issues - hopefully that part of the equation will work better when we're there.

I started off very nervous about the new systems, and early reviews were scary ... but now, I'm cautiously optimistic about the new changes. I think it might cause slightly longer standby waits on secondary attractions, but overall, I think we'll be guaranteed to see a lot of headliners without the usual FastPass- scramble to get tickets as soon as you hit the parks. At the very least, we should have a more leisurely pace to this trip.

Our trip began just about the time yours was ending. We had many of the same experiences that you did with MB and FP+. The bands worked most every time and if one didn't work then we just scanned another of our party and went on. This was only a problem usually when making a purchase or paying for food, and more often than not it was more a problem with the handheld reader.

My experience booking our fps was good, online at 11PM and less than 5 minutes and I had first day MT, A&E, and Splash Mtn. After 30 mins I had all 10 days worth of FPs on our bands. Then with the exception of A&E, I was able to adjust times and even change which Park we were going to on two days, due to the schedule of when our DD was going to be with us.

Same experience with lines during morning, still able to get right on BLSR, TLR, teacups, Space mtn, JC at MK. EE, KS, PW, Dino at AK; RNRC, TSMM, ST, ToT at HS; Soarin, TT at EPCOT. Still had to make a choice as to which one in some cases to choose to do due to proximity of attractions which we had to do before FP+ but I can't say that I missed the mad dash to pixar place.

What I noticed about about attractions that normally had short wait times before was that for most of the time wait was normal, only due to weather causing outdoor attractions to shut down, or other circumstances such as the mishap with the brit on POC. But after a bit of time to get back up to speed, the wait times were back to normal.

The kiosks were fairly easy to use and we were able to get some good attractions even in the evening. But some locations were less than ideal. Even CM working the breezeway between Frontierland and Adventureland said that they hated working that one since there is no breeze and no shade where the line is.

Bottom line we did all the attractions that we wanted and didn't spend an excessive amount of time (longer than 30 mins) in line for ones that we didn't have FPs for, which is just the way we've always done it. We even rode the MT multiple times every day we were at MK, one of those FP each day. But we don't just use RD, we use the late night strategy as well. I wish I had thought to log it, but our last night at the MK (midnight closing), my DS and I rode 6 different rides in less than an hour and a half, including MT to close it out with only a posted 30 min wait.

Great to read such a positive experience. I hope ours is as problem free on our first visit in 19 days! (Eek!)

Thank you! That was very helpful. We are headed to AK in 2 weeks for our 10th trip, yet I've been feeling like such a newbie because of all the recent changes. As a back up to the app, I've cut and pasted my MDE into my phone's Notes. One question. My understanding is additional FP's can only be obtained at the in park kiosks, but after reading your post (which I quite possibly misread) I'm wondering if those additional FP's be done through the MDE app on my smartphone? Thanks!

it is easier to use the kiosks in the parks, but one day while we were there, we did all we wanted to do at AK, and used all our fps. we decided to go over to MK, and while on the bus, using the website on my phone's browser, not the app, i was able to secure 3 fast passes for the MK for that day. i was able to get SpaceMtn, BTMRR, and Buzz, but only for the manager's (dw) band, which i found out once we went to use the first one. but the cm said let me see your reservation, which i pulled up on my phone, (using the website, not app), and she made the adjustment on her pad and sent us through. so in my experience they are much more accommodating than i have heard others say.

That's interesting, pogopossum. Thank you!
