UPDATE The vet said Koda is resting comfortably and doing good so far. I forgot to mention that there is the possiblity of death :( as the worms could travel in his bloodstream and lungs. Have to keep him calm for at least 2 months. Thank you all for your good wishes and experiences with this.

Please keep Koda in your thoughts. He is almost 18 months old and we got him when he was 6 months. Rescue told us he was heartworm negative but the vet has told us that he was too young to really know and we just found out at his yearly appointment. He gets one shot today and then two shots in January. Recommended to crate him 24/7 just out for bathroom walks and a hug. Anyone have any successful heartworm treatment story?

awww! i don't have a heartworm treatment story, but my cousin, who is now 18 1/2 years old, had a shar-pei named koda when he was a very little boy. we loved that dog, he was very sweet. at that time, my brother had a rottweiler named toga, which my cousin adored, and he wanted to name his dog toga too, but he couldn't say toga, it came out koda, so his dog was koda, lol. will say a prayer for your koda. :)

I helped with my daughter's dog last year when she had heartworm treatment. 6 year old rottweiller-1st treatment took her in the morning and picked her up in the afternoon. She did really well, didn't seem bothered and ate and drank well. 2nd treatment she stayed overnight, picked her up the next morning and she was fine. She is a very mellow dog so crating wasn't necessay. She is doing well now, heartworm negative. She did get bronchitis recently, but did recover with antibiotics. the vet says going through the heartworm treatment has made her more suseptible to other illnesses.

You do have to remember to continue with heartworm medication, because according to our vet they can only recieve treatment once.

that's a sweet story! We got Koda's name from the Disney movie Brother Bear :)

Good to hear your DD's dog is doing well, well except for the bronchitis. The Vet recommended Heartguard for the monthly med and that if he gets heartworm positive again, the next treatment would be covered by that company.

I have a good heartworm story :)

We adopted a Jack Russell along with his heartworms about 2 years ago. He had a very severe case of them. He did all the shots over 2 days which was really hard on him :(

He was crated for 4 weeks, went for an xray and there was some change in the number of worms so we crated for another 4 weeks. Went back for another xray and starting to show good improvement. Our vet said he should be crated for 4 more weeks...and I said no. I don't know if you know anything about JRT's but they are "on-the-go dogs" and crating him 24/7 was killing him. So the vet and I came up with a plan and we let him be a dog.

He did great! The only problem we have had is that when he was being neutered, his heart stopped but the vet was prepared for it and we had no problems.

Two years later he is doing great! That's him in my avatar and he is a regular at our dog park and not a single problem. He may not live as long as some JRT's because of it, but I am thankful everyday that everything worked out.

That's the Reader's Digest condensed version of Zippy's heartworms!

Good luck with Koda ~ it'll be fine :)

Forgot to add that dogs with previous heatworms cannot take any heartworm meds except Heartguard ~ at least that's what I've been told and I wouldn't count on the Heartguard company covering anything.

One of our dogs was successfully treated for heartworms. It was in 1993, so it has been a while. We adopted a shelter dog. We took him to the vet right after adopting him, and the heartworm test was positive.

He went through the treatment, but I can't remember much of the details since it has been so long ago. We were told to keep him calm for a couple of months, but we didn't keep him crated while he was inside. If he went outside, it was on a leash though. He handled it very well. He was 3 when we adopted him, and he lived to be 14.

Our boy Teddy was a rescue from NOLA , he had a horrible case of heartworms when rescue found him. He made it through like a trooper and 7 years later he is a happy happy boy. Last year our new vet noticed some issues with his lungs when we had xrays done for some back issues, but it was scaring due to the heartworms years ago.

Good luck with your baby, I know it will work out fine !
