Our dog died while we were at WDW

I hope a Mod closes this thread as it is becoming NOT what it was intended to be. You people are cruel as another poster so aptly put it.

Seems like you are here to start a debate rather than help someone to feel better.

Why the hell would I want to make this person feel better? She left that poor dog on a cable wearing a choke collar while she went on vacation. Are there no kennels on the way to WDW? I just pray that she never gets another dog. *shakes head*

Those of you comforting the OP and condemning those who point out that the dog died because it was neglected...

What if someone posted that their infant died because they had just left it in the car for a few minutes or left it at home while they ran to the store. What would you be saying then?

I'll tell you what I would say. If the person was showing responsibility and remorse I would be more lenient and more sympathetic. I haven't seen anything like this from the OP.

I'm going to disagree with you Honeywolf. I don't consider myself to be God. I volunteered at an Animal Shelter and it's pathetic the way you will see abused animals come into the facility. Often, people will just get another animal and treat it exactly the same way.

The OP didn't have a problem with leaving her animal tied up outside (she admitted that the legs of the animal were tangled in the cable). I'm terrified she'll abuse another animal in the same fashion.

I stole a dog one time that was tied up with wire around it's neck (and I wouldn't hesitate to do it again). I saved that animal. I'd have loved to take the owner and left them tied up outside like that.

I'm sorry if you don't like the way that I felt when reading this post. I'm sorry the OP is going through the pain of losing a pet but the circumstance the animal was left in was a painfully obvious disaster waiting to happen.

Besides being left on a choke chain, being left out on a cable to fend for themselves during the weather in Kansas - the heat, the storms, is cruel itself.

Those of you that are reprimanding posters who have expressed their shock and anger of this animals death - you are doing just as much harm by egging on those of us with strong feelings towards animals and who are genuinely sadden to hear about an animal that suffered a painful death.

Just as you had the urge to shake your fingers at us, we had the urge to say something, whether it be a warning to others about the disaster those actions can cause, or just the anger that it happened.

Personally (and I will so be flamed for this) but I don't think I could ever find it in me to be able to put a thread out for all to read telling people how I caused the death of my pet. But that is just me. Some people value the lives of animals more than others and we are very passionate.

So please, shake your finger elsewhere.

I have a feeling she probably had no idea what could happen until it did happen.
Edited to add:
I love animals, but that doesn't mean that I would have the right to judge someone for a mistake they made. If it was a baby left in a hot car, yes I would probably have a different attitude but mainly because I don't see how anyone can be stupid enough to do that with all the media attention that has received in the past few years. Maybe instead of making someone who lost their pet feel bad, you should work on getting some attention on what can happen when a MISTAKE (not intentional abuse) like this is made.

Oh, that poor dog!

I can't imagine how lonely and frightened he must have been... :(

PLEASE don't adopt another animal if leaving him outdoors and alone is your plan....

Normally I don't get into this but anyone with common sense knows you don't leave a choker collar on a dog tied up somewhere while you'll be gone for who knows how long. I'm sure she learned from her mistake and I think the criticizm should stop.

Anyone think maybe the kennels were full?

Anyone think maybe she just didn't know what would happen?

Anyone think that she REALLY didn't think the choker would kill the poor dog?

Maybe it was a lapse in judgement (a big lapse at that) but it happens. It's happened to all of us, just 99% not to that extent. I remember once when I was 12 I had a baby iguana. I didn't think about it and I put it outside in one of those plastic cages you get for $5 from pet stores. It was in Texas, in the summer. I came out about 20 minutes later & he had passed. I learned from that mistake, and when I was 15, I bought two baby Iguanas that grew up to be 6 & 6 1/2 foot long.

All I can say is I offer condolenses and I hope you understand what you did do wrong. I'm not trying to hurt your feelings, I really do offer my sympathy.

I don't know what to say

I am so sorry your dog died. I love animals so much

I would be more concerned over what the poor dog went through in his final moments above hurtiing the feelings of someone who neglects their family pet they claim to love. Love like that -- who needs?
I am very sorry for the OP's loss. Amd sorry she had to explain to her children why their neglected dog died.

Something could happen at a kennel too. But leaving a dog chained up while you are on vacation is asking for trouble, if not fines from a local humane society.
The poor pet suffered for it, as well as the family.
I too hope you don't get any more pets.
I was expecting to read how an older dog died while they were away, or something more normal. Not from neglect/abuse.

Most people plan way ahead for WDW trips. If my choice was to leave my pets uncared for or no trip. I know what I would chose. there are many options -- family, friends, at home care. LOTS of options besides what was done.

I'm so sorry.

I don't think it's necessary to make her feel bad about her dog's death. She knows the mistake she made, knows what can happen now and already feels bad enough. I think it's best to just offer our sympathy.

I'm sorry Becki but if you are saying it's not okay for people to judge others on something they are doing or have done wrong... aren't you in turn judging us by saying we are wrong with what we have said and we think that we are God? Are you not in turn judging us?

JoNo, the difference is you were a child and the op is an adult ( i'm assuming) who should have known better. That said, hopefully she just didn't have any common sense and this cruel treatment was not done on purpose.

Also, I'm hoping others reading this thread who don't have any common sense when it comes to dogs will learn something here today and prevent another tragedy.
.....................................................................................................
The problem is, some people thing of pets as "things", not
unlike a disposable toy, and treat them that way.
I don't think, though, the op was one of these types.

How sad, poor thing. You can't help but think about the suffering.
We had to move once to a house that had no fence when my husband lost his job. We had our dog tied to a rope with a regular collar. He was so miserable. He kept running and almost choked himself. He was too large to keep in the house. Financially we could not afford to build a fence. After seeing how miserable he was and the thought of coming home to see him dead from choking to death was too much. We gave him away. That was over 20 yrs ago and I still think about him.
It was a tough lesson for us. We did not get another dog until 6 yrs ago. We now have two small ones that are in the house and treated like our kids.
It breaks my heart to see dogs tied up in a back yard. They never seem to be attended to.
All outdoor dogs should be checked on daily.

The OP hasn't even taken responsibility for her poor judgement. That is what really gets me.

If she had posted something along the lines-- don't do this... I wish I'd known, etc. it would be a different story for me.

Honeywolfe, the OP should be the one shouting from the roof tops the dangers of what she has done and yet she just wants us to feel sorry for her.

I would strongly agree that she should urge others not to make the same mistake but "throwing stones" at her isn't the way to encourage her to do so.

:( How sad for everyone. I don't think anyone is throwing stones just hoping that she learns from the mistake and another animal is not left to suffer the same way.

Please either get a fence or be prepared to have an inside dog if you plan on getting another dog.

Please don't blame the OP for the mistake they made. Yes it is a big deal and I'm sure she knows this. I'm sure the thought of her being resposible for the death of her dog has already ran through her head. I think it is best to just offer our sympathy to her family for the loss of their dog.

If you have something to say, offer your sympathy and don't be rude to her. She already knows the mistake her family made. Do you really think that thought isn't racing through her mind?
