 My brother is in a shelter in Cancun right now and has been since Thurs at about noon. Please keep him/his girlfriend in your prayers. :goodvibes

and we were supposed to go to Cancun Nov 4th, we are changing those plans. We are concerned about hotel damage, beach damage, etc and most of all TD 25 forming down in the Caribbean.
so we are going to Hawaii....

need help from those who have been to Maui or Oahu in Nov....
how is weather, rainy?, where to stay in Maui?,

we have been 4 times but not this time of year. Is it a good choice? we have to decide in the next day or two...

I've never been to Hawaii, but I wanted to send :grouphug: and good wishes to your brother and his girlfriend.

October/November can be rainy but can be great!!!
Go to Maui, lots of condos there! Are u looking for deluxe, first class or moderate.
Do you want to see water from your window? That'll cost ya. There's quite a large group of Bed n Bfsts in Maui if that interests you. Get a car. Tour companies sometimes package things for less. You might try a travel agent but be ready to pay up front. I liked Classic Vacations when I worked in the industry. They had lots of clout and a real good variety of accomodations.
Sorry about Cancun. Hope your brother gets home soon.

eta. look at Napili Kai Resort, nice and newly renovated, small and kind of away from it all but easy to get to the action.

Disney-Kim,

First of all TD is going to move away from the US and will only take aim at the DR. I to had reservations for Cancun, but not until Feb 06 and already cancelled and decided to stay at WDW instead. However I'm thinking of changing those plans and either going on a cruise or back to Hawaii.

But I've never been to Cancun...Too bad about the Yucatan Coast.I am praying for the people down there...hope everyone is safe.
I love going to Hawaii in November/December.I would not go any other time.
I went once in April and would not go back that time of year.I can't say exactly why.
Nov./Dec. Has the great waves coming in and it has just the right amount of
sun/overcast for me.I've went to Hawaii five times before I decided to try someplace new.
When they say 'rainy' season it's really just a sun shower in 85 degree weather. It has no affect on us at all.WE love it that time of year.Definitely pack your bags and go......
Wish I could go too!
Debbie

We were in Cozumel, Playa Del Carmen and Tulum a week ago yeaterday. They wer ejust getting back on their feet. It's such a beautiful area. I hope your brother is OK, and can get back home soon.

The local people we met were extrememly gracious, and I'm sure will help him in any way they can.

I was just in Oahu last weekend, and the weather was nice. It was raining in some areas of the island, so just bring a jacket. You can always get an umbrella at the store if needed, but you should be good.
Also, the evenings are a bit cooler.

I just said some prayers for your brother, hope he gets home safely! :grouphug:

As for Hawaii, I don't know about this time of year, but we were there in July, in Oahu, and the whole trip was fabulous. Wish I could go back! We stayed in the Royal Hawaiian, (the pink place) which was very 1920's somewhat art deco-ish designed theme, just marvelous.

Have a good trip! :sunny:

Thanks for the good thoughts everyone. as of 5pm AZ time tonight my brother was ok but was told their hotel had extensive damage and will not be allowed back before Tuesday. So he is stuck in the shelter until they can evacuate the tourists from Cancun.
I have read on some local Cancun boards that the damage has been very extensive and it will be some time before Cancun recovers. Our hotel, JW Marriott, suffered a lot of damage I read.
well today we booked our trip to MAUI !!!

We are staying at the Hyatt in Maui !!! woo hoo....
any Maui suggestions would be appreciated.

thanks again for the prayers for my brother and all the others with him
:goodvibes

I am frustrated this morning at the lack of coverage of the damage in Cancun.
I have read online the airport my not be back up for days and they may have to bus the tourists to other citites and that the tourists will not be allowed back in their hotel to get their stuff.
I have not talked to my brother since yesterday.
keep his safety in your thoughts !!!

thanks
:)

the maui golf course has a great restaurant (don't golf just liked the restaurant). there are coffee and pinepple plantation tours, luaus (check convention/visitors bureau website to find most authentic), scuba/snorkle (we did a tour to the waters off molokini). for the major sports enthusiast there is the downhill bike ride from hana (just have to endure the EARLY morning winding van ride up).

i want to do a helicopter tour next time, we did one in alaska and found that the views are so worth the price.

have a blast!

I absolutely love Maui. You are staying in a great location, right on Ka'anapali Beach. The temperature in Hawaii varies very little, maybe five degrees over the course of the year. What changes is the "rainy" season and that is usually a function of which side of the island you are on. Wailea tends to be sunnier in the winter, Kapalua tends to be rainier and cloudier. Ka'anapali is in between. I can't imagine that you won't have a wonderful time. I love Lae Lani's for lunch. Its at the Whaler Shops on the beach. You can walk there. The fish tacos (cajun style) are wonderful and for a reasonable price. I am assuming that you are renting a car, you will need one. I would definately do the Hana Hwy. Count on rain on that side of the island. It is beautiful, interesting and Waianapapa State Park has a beautiful black sand beach with a lava tube cave that you shouldn't miss. You can continue on to the "seven sacred pools", actually Oheo Gulch, nicknamed that to attract tourists. It's beautiful also. We had an SUV and drove around the back of Haleakala. According to the rental agreement, you aren't supposed to take that road but if the roads are clear and its not too rainy, it isn't a bad road. We followed a Mustang convertable and they had no problems. I would also suggest getting up at 3 am to see the sunrise on Haleakala. It isn't that the sunrise is so spectacular, its nice, but one drives up in the dark totally unaware of the beautiful scenary that they are passing and when you drive back down, it unfolds all at once. Have breakfast at the Kula Lodge. I love the banana mac nut pancakes. I wouldn't bother spending $100 pp to ride the bike, you will enjoy it in the car for a lot less money. If you are flying from the east coast, I would do this on the first day of arrival because you will be waking up early anyway. Be sure to visit Lahaina town. Its a fun place. Pick up the Wizard Pub. book Maui Revealed. Its the best guide book I have found. If you are interested in a sailing/snorkeling experience, skip the big catamarans and check out the Scotch Mist. Its a mono hull sail boat. You can google it. We loved it. We sailed with just the five of us and another family. So many people gravitate to the Cat. vessels and the big operations that they miss out on this great experience. If you have time, consider a flight to Molokai and a mule ride down to the leper colony, Kaulapapa. Its for guests "over 16". We found it extremely enlightening and very moving.

Good suggestion!

Although I haven't stayed there, I want to next time we go to Maui. Napili Bay is a gorgeous place. It has views of Molokai and Lanai, and a very nice beach.

Napili is beautiful but it may be a bit more rainier than locations south.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I am just happy to be on vacation and we have loved our trips to Oahu, so I am sure we will love Maui !!
sidenote...we are actually staying at the Westin. got a great deal and those heavenly beds look great !! ;)

Did your brother get home? We were supposed to leave for Cancun today! I am so sad that such a beautiful place had so much distruction. We cancelled (obviously) but hope to go next year! Hawaii is wonderful, you will love it there!

**update** my brother got home safely on Friday night. It cost them $800 on Continental to get home. They could not get out on American, their original airline.
their whole story is a nightmare.
We were going to Cancun Friday...but as I have posted...its now Maui !!
