Our AC unit just took dump.

New compressor is almost as much as just having a new unit installed.

They can't even do it until next week.

The heat index is 101. It is so hot in here. My poor little 4 month old is not happy.

:rolleyes1

Oh my! I just signed on and read your thread --- how awful! I totally feel for you. That is just about one of my top nightmare scenarios happening to us AGAIN. We lost ours for four days a few summers ago and it was brutal. Frankly, I can not even imagine how anyone lived in this state before air conditioning was invented.

Can't you call around and find someone else who can fix it or replace it sooner?

I have no cooling off advice, but if it were me I'd try and visit a friend.

Mine went out yeterday. Inside my house was 89 degrees. It was the motor. $400 so far. But they need to replace some bearings and a fan. They hooked up the wrong fan on purpose just so I have AC.

It sounds like an airplane when running! So LOUD! Fortunately I have understanding neighbors and I shut it off at night.

So, hopefully in the next few days it will be fully fixed.

Oh my. That is awful. I hope you can get it fixed faster than what they say.

Do you have any relatives to stay with? Can you afford a hotel for a few days? I think DH would melt without AC in that kind of heat. ;)

I'd be in a hotel, I can't handle it! Last Summer our AC went out for one night and DH and I checked into a hotel =)

Hope you can find a way to find some relief.

sorry you are having to deal with this

I'm with you OP, I'm in Indiana and its maybe 90degrees+ where I am. Our air conditioner went out too late last week. We thought we fixed the problem when DH changed the filters, but then the house went back to being hot. Luckily, we have a basement and that's where we've been camping out at night, but even the basement is warming up.

I do have some suggestions:

1) close as many un-necessary vents as you can, If you are still getting a little bit of cool/cold air
2) Close all your curtains and blinds
3) Here's my favorite part- don't do laundry or dishes even cooking. The heat makes your house hotter
4) During the day find a reason to be in your air conditioned vehicle
5) Hide out at the library or mall or a friend's house as another poster suggested. The grocery store, Target, Wal Mart, are other good places (any place w/ air cond.) to hang out.
6) Take lots of showers or baths to keep you and your baby's body cool.

I hope you get your air fixed soon. I like the other poster's idea of going to a hotel! I'll have to present that idea to my DH. Thanks Aimeedyan!

Well,

We're getting a new unit installed Monday morning. $1339 is the price for a total install and digital thermostat.

They 2nd guy we had out confirmed it was the compressor and he is bringing back a window unit for us to use until Monday.

I guess we are having a slumber party in the living room tonight.

I can think of a lot of other things I could have spent $1400 on right now but...oh well.

If we hadn't called someone today we probaby would have checked into the Disney resort over in Vero. The kids would have been just sick about that, I'm sure. :earboy2:

Ouch. I'm glad they're coming Monday morning, and I hope you find relief until then.

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Those are so funny. :teeth:

I feel bad for all of you and especially that little baby. :guilty: Hope you get a breeze tonight. :)

Been there, done that. :grouphug:

If you don't know anyone who will take you in, it's time for a hotel room. The local Holiday Inn here offers a reduced rate if they know your A/C is out or you have another homeowner problem.

If you can't afford that, go to a movie or the mall! Good luck!

Thanks, everyone.

The owner of the company brought a window unit out and it seems to be working well.

I can't wait until Monday!

If we didn't have the window unit, we'd be at a hotel.

:cold: :cold: I'm thinking cold thoughts!

The worst part of this whole thing is that we were experiencing almost daily power outages due to a problem in the area the last 2 months. The ACV guy said this could have caused the compressor to break. Maybe I should send the bill to FPL :rotfl:

Mine took a dump last Sunday and we finally got it replaced yesterday. For once I was really happy I was subbing all week. At least I was in an air conditioned school all day. I feel for you. Hang in there. The new a/c will feeel great.

I feel for you. Mine is broken as well, but fortunately it's not super hot out (only 80's today). Of course its hotter right now in my apartment than it is outside. Mine needs freon (second time this summer so obviously there is a leak they are neglecting to fix). They won't be out until Monday or Tuesday to fix it :(
