This was the first time we had stayed at GF for more than 1 night and gave me a better perspective on the resort as a whole.

The Grand Floridian is a beautiful resort. I don't think anyone can argue with that. We were there while they were assembling the gingerbread house and, so, saw it from start to finish. What an impressive structure. What I found interesting was that the "siding" was not made of big sheets of gingerbread but of individual "shingles". They had bins and bins of them. What a lot of work.

The staff was pleasant enough - nothing outstanding except for one. One night we stopped off at the lobby concierge to ask about behind the scenes tours. This cm was extremely friendly and explained everything and booked one for us. Then we asked him about dinner ps's for "right now" which was about 6:30 pm. He looked up what was available and showed us the menus for each restaurant. Then, once we selected what we wanted, it turned out the time slot had been taken. He got the phone and called the restaurant directly and they were able to squeeze us in. We ate at Narcoosee's and watched the fireworks from our table. The food was excellent and the service was good too.

We were staying in a lagoon view room. It was nice. Beds turned down every evening. In the morning they had coffee out in the lobby of our building for early risers. I'm not sure what time they set it up but they would take it away by 8 am.

The monorail and boat from MK were convenient.

One of my dislikes of this resort had to do with the upkeep. Don't get me wrong - it looked beautiful and well kept. However, there were cm's constantly roaming the pathways in those little carts. Porters and mousekeepers and service people and management. Honestly, you rarely saw anyone walking. I found it pretty annoying in that you were always looking over your shoulder for someone in a cart trying to get by. At first, we often would eat breakfast outside Gasparilla's because we just wanted something small. There's a beautiful view of the castle, but man, the hustle and bustle of those carts trailing other carts (some of which had loose wheels that made them very noisy) and the trucks nearby- yuck. It basically seems to be located around the service entrance.

(Sidenote: Eventually, we found ourselves walking to the Polynesian for breakfast. It is a beautiful little walk and you can pick up a "real" coffee upstairs near the Kona Cafe and, actually, we found that the cafeteria had a better selection of breakfast foods. To top it all off, the outdoor eating area was much more pleasant - surrounded by plants and quiet Hawaiian music wafting through the air and not a cart in sight.)

Another thing to do with upkeep is the practice of laying out the clean linens in the hallways outside everybody's door. Okay, the wicker baskets they were in lent a small air of quaintness to it, but, all in all, I thought it took away from the whole package. IMO, the effort it takes to keep up a hotel is supposed to be as invisible as possible.

Finally, we went to do laundry in the laundry room conviently located on the first floor of our building and found that there was no change machine. I believe it was $2 each for the washer and dryer. Who carries a pocketfull of quarters on their person? We had to go to the front desk to get change. The final blow came when the drier (after a 45 minute cycle) nicely heated our clothes without actually drying them. We're talking about half a load of t-shirts and underwear not a giant load of jeans and towels.

All in all, while I would not dissuade anyone from staying at the GF, I have to say it's a nice place to visit (tour the lobby, have a meal...) but I choose to stay elsewhere.

I think that the little problems you mention are what keeps this hotel from reaching it's potential (and it's advertised status). Things like that just don't routinely happen at a top of the line resort. (Which is why for the money I would stay at the Ritz or the JW Marriott instead)

I love the look of the GF but I'm waaaay outvoted by dh and THREE sons who are against 'foo-foo'. Nice plug for the Poly though and that's our next stay so I'm a happy camper!! :D

You know, we stayed at the Grand about 3 years ago. At the time, the Yacht and Beach were our favorite resorts. We hadn't tried the Poly at this point, and now the Poly is our favorite. Anyway, we thought the Grand was beautiful!! But, we weren't blown away and we missed Stormalong Bay and the Epcot area. So, we only stayed one night and switched to the Beach Club. We were totally stuck on the Epcot Resort area, which is great. Then, this year we stayed at the Poly and LOVED IT! In fact, it moved up to the #1 spot and became our favorite resort. So much so that we had to go twice this year. Loved the volcano pool, although it's not Stormalong Bay, but I love having Seven Seas Lagoon as a backdrop. To make a long story short, we gained a new respect for the MK area. Loved the monorail. The Poly is more our style than the Grand. However, we just went for a quick weekend trip over Thanksgiving - stayed at the Swan. Which was great by the way. We visited the Grand to see the decorations and they were, in my opinion, the best overall decorations at Disney. I told my DH I would like to try the Grand again, but he's not that interested. Oh well - I think it's the Poly again for us for our next trip.

We, too, found the constant barrage of carts quite a nuisance. It seemed we were always redirecting our kids out of the way of them. How was housekeeping? Our rooms were always immaculate, but they were never cleaned until late afternoon.

I have no complaints about how the room was kept. It was always well taken care of and, I believe, was normally cleaned in the morning/mid-day since we often were back at the room by 3 or 4 and it was always done by then.

We have stayed at the GF 3 times now. I agree with you about the carts driving around constantly. It was actually humorous after a while and I likened it to the Keystone Cops. It is a beautiful resort and I agree with another poster that it has not yet reached its potential. We have stayed at the YC many times and for less money, the service seems just as good - and the location is superior. But there is just something about having your airport shuttle pull up to the Grand Floridian upon your arrival.

Just a note that we had the same problem with the dryer at the YC. ( Other than that we LOVED the YC)

I would venture a guess that 75% of the dryers at WDW have the same problem. I am not sure that I have ever done the drying in one cycle.

I have always wanted to stay at the GF. I always said that if I could ever afford it I wouldn't hesitate. We have been inside the lobby and 1900 Park Fare and I thought it was just beautiful. It did not thrill my husband and two teenagers, though. The kids made it very clear that it wasn't their kind of resort. So when my husband surprised me with a birthday trip to Disney, just him and I, the resort of my choice, guess where I chose...........The Poly. I don't know why! I just did a little research, read a lot of boards and prayed I wouldn't regret it. And I didn't. It is by far our favorite resort. We can't wait to bring the kids one day. We're hoping a special comes out in April, so we can switch from WL to Poly half way through the week.
I'm sure some day I'll try the GF, but I'll wait until they fix the wheels on those carts :D

Gosh, we just love the GF, and those carts don't bother us at all! The driver almost always gives us a friendly greeting and it's OK by us! Since it's the first resort our DD(5) has ever stayed at, she says it's her favorite  !

I second your opinion. DH and I just got back from our honeymoon and we stayed at the GF honeymoon suite and we just fell in love with the place. As for the carts and the clean linens in the basket, I honestly hardly notice them. I was sad to leave the place since our next hotel was the Poly and I was a bit disappointed with that hotel. Our room had a funny smell and there were bugs inside our rooms. (We stayed in both the GF for three nights and then the Poly for also three nights). One thing for sure is next time we go it will definetly be the GF for us :D

That was the 'attitude' that I feel was bothersome to us on our stay there also! The idea that all the support staff had to 'motor' to their location and clogg up the path's and the senery for all the 'stolling' guest! I did love the housekepping staff wlaking with their parasoles(sp?) though. While I will not stay there again, we do visit everytime for lunch at the Cafe and a lite bite at Gasparella's for the MK view!! To me the staff is equal to all the other resorts on site (most good.some bad) but not extra-special (ie:friendly) as I would have expected! The price difference for this resort should reflect the attitude of 'higher' quality treatment IMHO.

I stayed at the GF in Oct. for my first time & loved it. I had never really wanted to stay there, I thought it was too frou-frou. The Happy Haunts package I was on put me there. I was so pleasantly suprised.

I agree that the carts rushing down the paths all the time can detract a little from an otherwise very peaceful & serene environment. It wasn't enough to upset me, but now that you mention it, it would be better if the carts were used in a more "backstage" fashion. The wicker baskets of linen didn't bother me at all.

I had heard negative reports about the service there, but we didn't encounter anything but top-notch attention.

I will definately stay there again in the future.

I had the exact same thing happen to us with the dryer at AKL. Smells like a conspiracy. LOL

I think one of the things most telling things of the original poster is that she stayed 8 nites. That gives you a very good look around. On our 1st trip to GF it was just overnite and we loved it, it was a surprise for me, and very special. But our 2nd adventure, was supposed to be spectacular, 18 nites at the GF, (lv). Well started out ok, we had 2 wonderful rooms, great views, we requested to move, our choice, as they very nicely accomodated. We did not get an original request but after 5 nites they could move us, and did. :flower1: We had no real problems with housekeeping, they where very nice, and helpful. rooms where well kept, and maintained. Just something after about 1 week started to slowly annoy us to the point we were very ready to leave at the end of the trip. The carts (but we go to the poly alot, and they have the same problem), the linen in the halls get old after a few days of steping over it. The walk to self parking unbeliveable, not to mention unsafe? BUT, I think the main problem was we just felt like we didn't fit in, or didn't feel comfortable there. Its ok for a couple of days, but not for any long stretches for us. :earseek:

I am curious with the layout of the Grand Floridian and the Polynesian how would you get guests and luggage to the buildings without the use of the golf carts? Certainly at a busy time of year as the holidays they are going to be more noticeable due to the large number of guests at the resorts.

What would be your solution for fixing this? Same with the laundry baskets.

Personally I find the baskets a great improvement over those tacky Housekeeping carts that line the halls of the other resorts to the point you can't even get by.
