Our 2008 grand, GRAND FLORIDIAN Christmas trip 12/6-12/14

Subbing- can't wait to hear about your adventures!

You mentioned graduating from Nursing school in 5/06. Where do you work? I am an NP in Rhode Island.

Did I miss it- how old are your beautiful daughters?

What a fun filled first day! Driving under the sign always just makes it real, doesn't it?

Great start. My favorite thing so far is your DH's Bill Belichick hoodie!

Good morning to all!!!

Thanks for joining in wdwgirl03, Polyaddict, Sagefemme, tinker*bell*shell, Heatherlynn444, hockeymomR and Bellasmommy!!! So, glad to have you, here.

Polyaddict Have you been keeping up with the webcam this week at the Poly? I watched the MK fireworks and the ELP last night...from here. There is a board member who has set up a webcam from his first floor, MK-lagoon view room. It has been great. He said he'd set it up today around 8:30/9am.

Bellasmommy I'm so glad you found me!!! It was very nice to meet you and your family. Small world!!! My DD loves her shirt...so, glad you posted it for all to see and then try to find. She wore it on the plane and then to the MVMCP...under a sweatshirt of course...it was cold!!! I think she also has it on in another picture here, too!!! She loves that shirt...thank you, again!!!

OK...off to work, I'll post more tonight

I sure have but i forgot about it NYE!!!! I am such a dingdong!!:rolleyes1 I even was on the phone with a friend who was there and still didn't think to check the webcam.:headache:

Hi! Popped over from the GF Chat thread and I'm enjoying reading along!
Cute family - your youngest reminds me of Dakota Fanning! :)

I was thinking the same thing!! :rotfl2:

You have a lovely family. Looking forward to reading the rest.

Mare

PS: I have a love/hate relationship with Stacy. We always watch her, but I wonder most of the time WHY???

Good morning to all!!!

I am writing this TR just because it's fun and I love writing it. I'm also doing it partly so, that when I get to scrapbooking all 2000 pictures...probably 5 years from now...I'll have more of a recollection of what we did. Not, that I'd ever forget!!! I am also going to email this link to my parents...who are in Florida (no, not at Disney)...where it's apparently 80 degrees:cloud9: ...this will fill them in on some of the details until they get back here, up north...where it's 20 degrees. I'm also hoping it will also convince them that they need to join us for our next trip!!! Hint, hint!!!;) Having all of you along makes this all the more enjoyable. So, thanks for joining me and hello Mom and Dad!!!

Welcome to Alicnwondrlnd, Proudmommyof2 - Yes, I'm a nurse...did my first year in Telemetry and ICU, and have now switched to VNA nursing...love it and it's MUCH more convenient with young children; Whogirl'smom - I get all choked up driving under the sign...I can't wait to do it again!!!; Sawx04; Goofygal531 and Polyaddict - I watched the ELP and the fireworks the other night...love that webcam!!!

Just downloaded all of my 13yoDD's pictures...there are no extras to post, going back to day 1 but, she took some great pictures!!!

Great TR so far. I am so excited to hear all about the GF because we will be there in May. We stayed at CBR back in 2005 but this time with the buy 4 get 3 deal we decided to splurge and go for the GF. I can't wait. I have 2 boys the same ages as your older girls, 13 and 11. I am a little nervous about my 11 year old as an adult on the DDP because he is a picky eater who basically eats pizza, pasta or chicken nuggets/strips. You mentioned you would not do the DDP again, are your girls picky eaters?

Can't wait to read the rest. Keep up the great job.

Loralie

Day 2, really Day #1...it was originally supposed to be the first day of our trip...and the day our park tickets and meal plan started. So, we'll go with Day #1, December 7, 2008.
We got up around 6am...after 10 hours of sleep!!! Apparently, we had been a little tired from waking up so early the day before and from the start of all that walking. We were all showered and out of the room by 6:45am, to check out, send our big bags with bell services and transfer to the Grand Floridian. It was my decision to stop and take some pictures on the way out...mistake #1, of the morning. When we were done, we strolled over to the bus stop...as a bus was just pulling away...to wait for the MK bus. I was really sad to leave POR...I said to the family "I really hope that the GF lives up to POR...I'm really going to miss it here." Little did we know what was coming. Also, little did we know that we should have caught that first bus...the next bus did not come for 45 minutes!!! Just as I called in to report that we had been waiting for as long as we had, the bus came. We knew we would be taking busses this week...but, not nearly as many as if we stayed at POR...I would have been furious with wait times like that all week. Once on the bus, we had to travel aaaaaaaall the way around POR to the other depots. It was now 7:40am...so, much for trying to get an early start.

Once we got to MK we transferred to the monorail...of course, the wrong one. We got on the express monorail (mistake #2.) As it took off, I thought "great the GF is the first stop." Well, we sailed right through!!!:scared1: Once, I realized what we had done...we got off at the TTC and ran around to the right one. which then took us back in the same direction. By now the whole family is laughing at the "know it all"...me...because they think I am the expert...and I literally had us going around in circles!!!:rotfl: So, we FINALLY get off at the GF. We went to check in...and all started to go smoothly. I always hold me breath when we check in...thinking "please say...oh yes, we have you right here." And that is exactly what they said. Phew!!!:thumbsup2 The CM proceeds to give me our folder and gets our cards ready...all is right...the tickets, the meal plan...the dates of our stay. Then she says..."You can go right over to your building...breakfast has just started." I said "breakfast?!?" "Which building would that be?!?" She says "The Sugarloaf building"....with a big smile. I know from all of my experience and knowledge from these boards that that building is concierge level only!!!:cheer2: I am just about to explode with joy...my family wondering, what in the world is she so excited about. I collect the rest of our things, turn around...trying to stay calm...and say "Let's walk outside..." We needed to check our carry on bags with GF bell services. As we pass all the CMs on the way out, we are greeted with "Good morning" "Hello, princesses" My girls really did feel like princess!!! As we make our way to bell services...I turn to my family and say "WE'VE BEEN UPGRADED!!!" They of course, do not know what that means exactly but, I do and I can't believe that this trip could already be this GRAND!!!:cloud9: It didn't take long to get over leaving POR and become hooked on the GF!!!
Disney20081186.jpg

We did not go right over to the SugarLoaf building or take many picture that morning...we were trying to get to MK for ropedrop. We started our first day there, last year...I wanted to keep with tradition. However, our plan this year was a little different. Instead of running in crazy, to get on a ride, with the rest of the stampede...like we did last year. Our plan this year was to stroll in, take our time...take it all in and go to the bakery on Main St, for breakfast. It was a great decision.

Disney2008193.jpg

I love this picture of the girls...waiting for the morning show to start. It was nice to take things slower, this year. I think we missed alot last year by rushing to get everything in. This year, I wanted to take it all in. So, glad...outside MK is beautiful...all the pointsettas and garland. When we got in line last year, we tried to get as close to the gate as we could. We weren't aware that there is a morning show...we didn't miss it. But, we couldn't see very well and I didn't think to take any pictures. This year, another goal was to be right up at the wall and to of course, TAKE LOTS OF PICTURES. So, that is exactly what we did...we got right up to wall, had a great view and took tons of pictures. I loved this show...makes the rope drop even more exciting. A woman comes out and makes an announcement, then some CMs come out and start singing...I thought "oh how sweet...isn't this nice." Then the train whistle blows and the train pulls into the station, with all the characters. They get out and start singing and dancing...makes things even MORE exciting. My 11yoDD loves trains...so, I was excited that she was excited. Definately don't want to miss the morning show!!!

Disney2008198.jpg

I couldn't believe how great some of these pictures came out...it was hard to see the camera screen in the sun. Once, I put them on the computer I realized how great they came out. It paid off to be at the wall during the show.
Disney2008205.jpg

Disney2008208.jpg

As the show comes to an end, a family that is picked ahead of time comes out with Mickey and they all shoot pixie dust all over everyone. The girls were so excited to catch some pixie dust...the silver, square, sparkly things are the pixie dust...I was shocked that I got that picture. I just kept snapping pictures...and was pretty excited to get that one.

Disney2008210.jpg

This year we strolled in and let everyone make a mad dash by us. We took lots more pictures...surprize, surprize...and headed for the Main St. Bakery. We were some of the first people in line. By the time we got to the counter, the line was out the door. We all got great breakfast...our first meal plan meals. I got the French Toast loaf, 11yoDD got a ham and cheese croissant...those were our favorites of that meal. As we were finishing up, we headed outside for the Main St parade. We had a video when my older two were little of Disneyland...the song "Walking Right Down the Middle of Main St., USA" is in it. They used to sing it all the time...last year we didn't even realize they did that. This year, we walked out and there it was!!! I was so excited...we didn't even plan that!
Disney2008212.jpg
Disney2008220.jpg

We proceeded up Main St...still not believing that we were really here. We passed the castle and headed into Liberty Square. Last year, we started with Space Mountain...big mistake. Our youngest HATED it...never thought to consider that. She was tall enough and we had an agenda. I thought she'd be scarred for life, after that experience. This year we let her pick where'd we start. She picked The Haunted Mansion. Good pick...and no line!!!
Disney20081192.jpg
Disney2008222.jpg

Disney2008224.jpg
Disney2008225.jpg
Disney2008227.jpg

We all decided that our next ride would be Splash Mountain...we all loved that but, we weren't too excited about getting wet. It was early and a little chilly. So, we got fastpasses for that. We let our youngest pick again and she pointed at Big Thunder Mountain...and said "I want to go on that!!!" We were all a litte shocked but, before she could change her mind. We jumped on. She loved it!!! I wasn't sure if she really did or she was trying to seem "big" but, she did it and we were so excited for her. She was so proud of herself. After splash mountain, we got her a BTM pressed penny.
Our favorite ride being Splash Mountain was made even better when ended up in our own log...just the five of us. We ended up buying the picture...first purchase sent back to our room...love that!!! I'd have to scan that, to include it here...haven't gotten that far. But, I did get a picture of all of us under the sign...a CM was nice enough to hold the line back and snap it for us.

Disney2008229.jpg

We made our over to Adventureland...stopped and got corndogs on the way. They sound so gross but, I really wish I could have a corndog, right now...they were so good!!! But, not part of the mealplan...reason #1 why we would not do the mealplan again.
We did Pirates of the Caribbean...always great!!! That attraction really makes you really feel like your at Disney...a real favorite!!!
Disney2008231.jpg

We did the Jungle Cruise...the captain was a girl...never had a girl captain...she was HILARIOUS!!! She picked my 7yoDD to "drive" the boat...which was a huge memory for her. I don't know if all the captains say the same things or not...maybe some just say things funnier than others...but, this girl was the best!!!
Disney2008235.jpg

We headed over the Alladin's Magic Carpet Ride...that was cute. Tried to take some aerial shots...those did not come out so well. But, it was a great view from up there.
Disney2008236.jpg

NEXT UP: Tomorrowland, Mickey's Toontown Fair and the Disney Dreams Come True Parade...

Awesome upgrade!!! Can't wait to hear all about it!

We have never really considered The Grand Floridian, so I am interested in your perspective.

Congrats on the upgrade! You can actually feel how relaxed you were on your first day, just trying to take it all in. Our next trip, I think dd will finally be old enough to not want to run straight to Fantasyland at opening--we'll see!
The weather looks gorgeous that day, too.

That is great that you were upgraded to Sugarloaf. We were there 6 or 7 years ago and loved it. Regular rooms, but we loved the extras. Can't wait to hear what you thought of your stay there. You also got great shots at the train station with the characters-very cool! :thumbsup2

Hi Leighan!!!! I'm soooo glad you started your TR and now we can see how many times we passed each other this week!!:cutie: What a great start and I love all of the pictures you took, you did great!!! The girls look sooo happy to be there and I can just "hear" the excitement as you write your TR! Looking forward to some more!!:surfweb:

Disney2008243.jpg

Next, we headed over to Tomorrowland. We did The Carousel of Progress. Last year, we walked in and saw that it was auditorium looking...thought we'd just continue right out the other side. Something made us sit down and stay...not sure what...but, we were so glad we did. We loved it!!! So, I was pretty excited that we were able to walk right in and sit down...and then it started. Loved it just as much...seeing it again. It seemed shorter this year, though. Like maybe there was a decade/era missing. But, we all have our favorite parts...the shaking exercise machine, all the electrical cords, the Grandmother with the video and the voice controlled stove...it's one of those WDW staples that we can't do without now.

My two younger girls wanted to do the TTC...now, I forgetting the name...the blue ride. My DH and older DD got popcorn and waited for us because they would not let them on with it. It is always a relaxing ride and a great way to see the park from above.
Disney2008244.jpg

Disney2008247.jpg

We ran over to get fastpasses for Space Mountain...only got three...there was no way 7yoDD was going back on that. She had become a little braver...more brave...my brain is not fully functioning this AM...sorry about the grammar...whatever the proper grammatical form should be:confused3 ...SHE WAS STILL NOT DOING SPACE MOUNTAIN!!! We listened to her tell us all the way across the park. So, while we waited for the fastpasses to come due...we did Buzz Lightyear...that is such a fun ride...we all loved that. Just a side note...I'm the reigning 2008 family champion...not to brag or anything.
The wait for that ride was about 30 minutes...lots of cheerleaders in front of us...didn't time that right. I'm thinking if waited a bit for that whole group to clear out, we wouldn't have had to wait so long. Once, we were done...it almost time to use the fastpasses for SM so, I took 7yoDD to Toontown, while DH took the older two to SM. There seems to lots more pictures of my 7yoDD because whenever she passed on something too scary she always ended up with me...and I always had the camera.

Disney2008250.jpg
Disney2008258.jpg

We did the teacups on the way over...I think I'd prefer to do SM...they make me sick. She wanted to spin faster and faster...I felt like a bad mom...I wouldn't show how to get it going REALLY fast.
We toured through, Mickey and Minnie's houses...she seemed so big in there, with all the really little kids. This is probably my last year, with her to really enjoy Toontown.
When DH and the girls were finished on SM, they joined us in Toontown. We did the Barnstormer...and then got in line for the train, to take us around to the front of the park...for my next mission, this year...
Disney2008259.jpg

Next up: The Disney Dreams Come True Parade...
I know, I already said that, that would be next but, it's getting late and I need to get ready for work...sorry. I was having TR withdrawls and just had to do a little bit more of it...my Disney fix!!!:rotfl:

Another great update!! :goodvibes You got some cute pics of your youngest DD! That's kind of sad that she's almost done with Toontown....but I know what you mean about them getting too big for it...my oldest DS, seemed a bit big there too, this trip. :sad1: But he still loved every minute of it...so maybe a couple of more years!!:cloud9:

Ethan road SM this trip for the first time. He wanted to, so we said why not? I remember as a child sitting between my Dad's legs on that ride, when we got to go this time, I asked if he could sit with me and they said no, I was a bit scared for him!!:scared1: Half way down he kept saying "Mommy, I'm scared" and I just kept telling him to close his eyes, it would be done soon....it wasn't done soon enough, I felt like we had traumatized him for life!! We'll see what happens next time we go.....but I don't blame your DD....it's scarey for them!! Especially being in the dark.

Glad you found time to sneak in an update before work today...hope you had a great day!!:flower3: Looking forward to more!!:surfweb:

Great trippie so far! We're staying at the GF for the first time in June so the title of your report caught my eye. Looking forward to more:)

Hello everyone...in my haste this morning...trying to get my Disney TR fix...I realized I never said hello. So, hello to everyone...thanks again for joining me!!!

Proudmommyof2 I'm looking very forward to sharing my perspective on the GF...I'll be looking forward to hearing what you think once I'm done.
I never asked you about what you do... What type of NP are you? How long have you been a nurse? I love being a nurse...today was a sad and overwhelming day...I won't get into details but, some days are very challenging...many days, actually but, I love at least some part of what I do, everyday.

Whogirl'smom It was a beautiful day...sunny, a little cool but, perfect for strolling the parks. I wish everyone could have the experience that we had this year!!!

Keepmovingforward Love your screenname BTW. Wasn't the SL great? We thought it was amazing...can't wait to get to that part of my TR!!!

Shell54 Lurk and/or chat away!!! Great to have you hear!!! I hope you can get enough of a GF fix here, until June arrives. The GF was amazing...really hope you have a great stay there!

Kristen Love comparing notes on our week! That is funny...not funny, funny but, you know what I mean about the kids and SM. Last year, my daughter hit her head on the bed, before we had all woken up...she rolled between the trundle bed and the bedframe, in the middle of the night, without realizing it. It was so dark in the room, she didn't know where she was in the morning, and went to sit up...she smacked her forehead and face so hard on the underside of the bed, that the thud woke me up. She had a huge bruise and lump on her forehead. We put ice on it...she was fine, once we got on our way. But, once, she got onto SM, in the blackness, all she...and I, could think about was her getting hit in the face by something, in the dark...again!!! It was awful...I don't know if she'll ever go on it again.
OK...snuck in an update this morning...just snuck in this one, while making dinner...I know, late tonight...not the greatest of workdays...didn't finish til 6pm. Dinner is almost done...chat with you soon!!!

Great trippie!

DH's dream is to stay at GF someday. Each time I price it out it is over 5K! I need to start paying attention to those codes. We did stay last Jan at BWV - not too shabby but not GF!

And concierge! What an upgrade! Looking forward to hearing more about your trip.

OMG Leighan!!! I can't believe that story of your DD hitting her head and rolling into the space of the bed!! The poor thing and then being traumatized on SM later that day....ya, definately a therapy moment!! :rotfl: Someday I think Ethan is SO big but then others, like on SM, I realize he's only 6!!!! He's still so little....even if he tells me every day how big and old he is. :lovestruc

Sorry to hear that today was a sad day for you at work...hope you have some time to relax tonight!! ttys!!:goodvibes

Hi
I have been an NP for 11 years and a trauma/burn nurse for 5 years before that. I work in an internal med office.

I sometimes miss the high intensity of hospital nursing but really enjoy developing a long term relationship with patients.

I know what you mean about the rough days- they take their tole on you but remember what a comfort you are to these people. I love nursing. I love the medicine, the education and the caring. If you ever want to consider Grad school and would like to spend a day with an NP let me know!
