Our 2008 grand, GRAND FLORIDIAN Christmas trip 12/6-12/14

Isn't GF concierge the best!

When we were upgraded in 2007 to Sugarloaf, we had already booked a bunch of early ADRs so we weren't able to take advantage of the hordeurves.
So, this past summer, we booked our ADRs later in the day, and we stayed in the Royal Palm Club, so we took FULL advantage of the hordeurves, desserts, and especially 'tea time', which had the BEST scones! :goodvibes

I feel so bad for your DD! :scared: . That is my worst fear, being sick at Disney!

Bellasmommy Good to hear from you...your trip report is going well! I've been keeping up with that. But, I agree you're right...it can be hard to keep up. Glad to have you here!

Disneylover0216 Keep reading, then! I can't imagine spending any other time of the year at Disney. It is just so beautiful!!!

AGPrincess Thanks for you kind words. It was very grand...just amazing!!! Can't wait to go back...2010 is the plan...don't know if I can wait that long.

Whogirl'smom Cottage Pie sounds deliscious!!! I had the toffee pudding...that was amazing...especially with a heap of Illuminations and coffee! MMMMMM! I had read about the area that you mention...I was obsessed with not ending up there and I was obsessed with where that ball...as, I called it all night...the globe was going to be...didn't want to miss it. We weren't at the R/C for the food...the goal was the view for Illuminations...and we couldn't have lucked out any better than we did...it was all good!

Kristen Thanks! Did you get to Illuminations? Kind of late for your kiddos...unless all three can fit into the stroller. My little one fell asleep in DH's lap, right before dessert came...one of my older girls didn't like her dessert and ate my little ones ice cream. She slept through it and DH had to carry her out and back to the hotel...more amazingly she didn't wake up to her sister stealing her ice cream.

Proudmommyof2 Yes...I was having huge anxiety...as you'll find out. There is nothing worse than illness at WDW!

angelmav Glad to have you! There'll be more coming soon! Thanks for joining in!

MousekaMaddi Thanks for your kind words and thanks for joining! Glad to have you!

Disney O'hana Thank you! You also have a beautiful family! Love your Dis name! I can't imagine going to WDW at any other time of the year! Glad to have you here!

A's Princess Thanks!!! Yes...a croupy cough!:sad2:

Dis Wiz Yes...we loved concierge!!! Not sure how we'll swing that again...but, we WILL absolutely go back! SL was great but, I'd love to stay in the Main building, too...especially at Christmas, when the gingerbread house is blowing cinnamony, gingerbready smoke into the air all day...there was a bell chior there also, one night. I'm completely hooked!!!

Kittykat08 Thanks for joining...glad to have you!

Hoping to update, later today. So, glad to have you all here!!!

Well...our magic came to a SCREECHING halt!!!

I heard my oldest DD coughing throughout the night...and was progressively getting worse, as morning came. Of course, the room was so dark...great blinds at the GF, when they are closed the room is pitch black...so, I had no idea if it was morning or not. I grabbed my cellphone and realized that it was about 6:30am so, it was officially morning...but, I was the only one up...or, so I thought. As I went to get out of bed my DD starts to cry and says she feels awful. I feel her head and she felt like she was on fire...of course, not literally but, I KNEW she had a fever. Being the nurse...I had a thermometer and tons of OTC meds and one prescription...ZITHROMAX!!! I took her temp...102.9. She was really, truly...legitimately sick. 13yos can be dramatic, at times but, this was not drama. Luckily...I say that relatively speaking...she had been to the pediatrician about 5 days earlier, for ear pain. All three girls went to WDW, in 2007 on Zithromax for ear infections so, when she started complaining the week before...I thought "oh no...here we go again!" The MD said that she had some fluid behind her ears but, that she couldn't be sure if it was an infection and prescribed Zithromax...'just in case.' Thank God for that MD and thank God I filled that prescription...because we absolutely needed it...I almost didn't get the prescription filled before we left. So, I broke out the nurse kit...she got Zithromax, then Motrin, then Sucrets...her throat hurt, too. Then I ran down to the lobby...breakfast was just starting...I got her a bagel and OJ...motrin and antibiotics on an empty can be a bad combination. So, she ate and then she slept...and the rest of us just waited...and waited...

We were waiting for her to wake up...and while I was waiting...I started thinking "what am I going to do if the rest of us get sick?!? I only had enough Zithromax for one of us." So, I went back down to the concierge desk and told them I had a sick child...who would probably be fine in an hour or two but, that there were four more of us who could potentially end up getting sick and what do I do if that happens??? Never been sick out of state...does Disney have doctors...we don't have a car...:sad2: Lots of thoughts start to enter my head. So, I get the numbers for three different places...all offsite. They will pick you up or come to your room...there is the Celebration ER...none of them take our insurance so, it would have been all out of pocket expense. Suddenly, I'm thinking what if all four of us get sick...we have seven days left...too many days to wait til we get home...it's approximately $300 just for the MD, not including any tests or medication. Now, I start thinking about $$$ and we're on vacation and it's going to be Christmas when we get home...and I start to panic!!! We have now become the poster family for trip insurance!!!

So, I need to kill some time...DH was watching tv...but, my little one is going crazy, couped up in our room so, I told her I'd take her out for a walk around the resort. Of course, I brought the camera...which was good for two reasons...plenty of time to take all the pictures I wanted to of the resort and it helped to clear my head...of all things related to being sick.

So, I'll start my tour, outside the back of the SugarLoaf building...facing the marina...just outside of Gasparilla's. It was a very nice morning...a little chilly but, you could tell that it would probably warm up and be perfect for the parks...crossing my fingers that we get to the parks! I should also mention, that on the way out my DD and I stopped and had breakfast. She got her usual cereal and juice. I made a ham and cheese croissant, had a pastry and juice and then made a cappuccino to go. MMMMM!!! I made a cappuccino every morning and afternoon...with a shot of vanilla and a sprinkle of cinnamon. I have continued that since coming home. I am a huge ice coffee drinker...I even brought a pound of Dunkin Donuts french vanilla to brew in the room and make my own every day. I never brewed a drop...I have even taken to a hot coffee with vanilla and cinnamon since coming home. Anyways, we continued on after we ate breakfast out the back of the building, with my cappuccino to go...and it was a very nice walk around the grounds...on a very beautiful morning.

We started at the marina...there were boats of all kinds to rent. The monorail would pass by every few minutes...you could hear the boat horns and the train whistle in the distance, from the MK. I loved it out there.

My DD on the patio of Gaspie's...the castle was in the background...a little hard to see during the day but, a great place to see the castle all lit up at night...and Wishes!!! One night we came over for a quick bite to eat and there was a small wedding going on...right where my DD was standing. Imagine!!!

Another view of the SugarLoaf buidling from Gaspie's patio...and Gaspie's itself.

Next, we walked out of the marina area and around the side of the SugarLoaf buidling toward the main building...the main building was on our right...and the main pool was on our left...behind the fountain. The landscaping was beautiful...during the day and at night...all lit up with little white lights. The grounds were impeccable!!!

We kept going...past the main building and continued on to the beach and the beach pool. We were planning on having a late start on Tuesday...the next day and a full day off on Wednesday...so, I didn't take any pictures of that whole area...except for this one...until we were actually there, on those two days. But, again...so beautiful!!! Can you tell I reeeeeally loved it here?!?

We took a right and went in this side door...this enters the main building to the right of the huge staircase...the elevators are straight ahead...the grounds were beautiful...wait til you see the lobby!!!

Up next: Inside the main building...the lobby, the shops...the giant gingerbread house...

Sorry about your DD being sick. We had that happen on our honeymoon years ago at GF and wound up having the concierge arrange for us to get to a walk in center. They were really good-and thankfully the walk in took our insurance. I don't worry too much about being sick when on vacation at Disney (other than the down time) because Disney is so helpful that we know we are never stuck. Hope that DD had a quick recovery and nobody else got sick.

Well you made the best of a bad situation - very impressive how prepared you were with your meds.

Cool pics - makes me want to stay at GF even more now! Those beach chair cabannas (?sp) look like fun.

Hi!!:wave2:

Oh no!!! I can't believe how sick your DD was!!! Thank goodness you went with your instinct and picked up the persciption before your trip, you can never had too much of the OTC drugs for a trip with your kiddos!!! Hoping that no one else got sick??:confused3 And that this was short lived for your DD??

Great update and loved all the pictures you took of the GF, it was just beautiful!!!:p We saw just bits of it when we took a spin by to see the gingerbread house so we didn't get to see too much, thanks for sharing your fantastic pics..someday, we'll stay there!!!! And your new coffee habit sounds delish! I just picked up some of that 100 calorie cappachino at the market you can make at home, it's not bad for a little treat at night!! YUM!!

No, never caught Illuminations that week, we had plans to but with the little ones, it got to be too much late at night for that. Next time!!!;)

Hope you're staying warm this weekend..another 4-5 inches here today and more tomorrow....is it Spring yet?!! LOL!!:rotfl:

Will PM you back soon!!!! Can't wait to see the rest of your day and see how DD makes out!! Hint, hint!!:flower3:

That's really too bad about your DD! :sad2:

Your pictures are KILLING ME!!!! Seriously... stop it! :rotfl2:

I forgot that Sugarloaf was right next to the Marina! I love watching Wishes from there! So beautiful!

Thanks again for your installment, but it has gotten me VERY homesick...

158 more days.... 158 more days....

Zithromax! :scared: :scared: :scared: I found out two weekends ago what bad side effects can come with that--spent the whole night with racing heart, restlessness, awful anxiety and insomnia till 4 a.m. The next day my doctor put me on Omnicef--hives for two days. We just decided to stop after that and hope the strep didn't resurface. I don't know what in the world he can prescribe for me now. I'm so glad your dd could take what you brought her! You were very prepared. We always get trip insurance for Disney or anywhere we fly just because I am a big worrywort.

Great pictures and crossing my fingers that you didn't have an epidemic on your hands!

Just giving you a BUMP!!:thumbsup2

Hope you're staying warm in all this SNOW we've had recently!! Can't wait for the next update..hint, hint!:rotfl: :rotfl:

ttys!!
Kristen:wave2:
