I recently found the DIS boards and have enjoyed all the information. Reading trip reports while I planned really helped me become excited. So here I am to share my recent trip. This is my first ever report and I hope you all enjoy. It’s long but I’ve added various pictures for your viewing pleasure :goodvibes

Our camping adventures started when we were browsing Target back in January. Most everything in the camping section was on clearance. We found a Coleman tent for $40 along with other odds and ends. We have been buying things each paycheck. I think we are finally complete with everything we NEED (wanting is different :D)

The first trip we planned was a trip to the Fort in July with my sister-in-law and her boyfriend. We wanted to visit US for Harry Potter and do it as cheap as possible. I have booked a partial site with the 15% code for 5 nights. My DH and I wanted to practice a little with our new gear before taking two new campers with us hours away. We did two short weekend trips at state parks where it rained both times. We had fun regardless and were excited for July.

Here comes the part I call ‘DIS addict’. I had been reading various boards ever since I booked our July trip. In a nutshell, I felt July was too far away. I convinced my DH to book at weekend at the Fort for our 1st anniversary (May 30th). At the last minute we ended up buying premium annual passes. We liked the idea of added flexibility for planning and the motivation for future trips.

We wanted to go May 28-May 31. We debated for a few days if we should do it or not and waited too late to book a partial. We had to move up to a full hook-up site. Nothing was available for our exact dates. Luckily from reading the camping boards I knew to search for more days. I ended up having to book two more days to get a site and then called to cancel them. Very tricky system for people not in the know.

Day 1-May 28th:

We left around 8am Friday morning. My last day of the school year was Wednesday so I was celebrating two exciting events! DH was just happy not to be waking up for work. We are about 6 hours away. The drive was very easy. Straight shot down I-75 and then the turnpike.

We arrived at the Fort around 2pm.

After setting up camp we rode our bikes to the marina and hoped on the boat to MK.

We picked up our passes at will call and went for lunch at Columbia Harbour House. The upstairs seating was open and not crowded. It was a perfect, relaxing start to our vacation. After eating, we hit Haunted Mansion, grabbed a FP for Big Thunder, explored Tom Sawyer’s Island, rode Big Thunder, then hopped on the monorail to Epcot for evening EMH (9pm-12am).

View from our table. We spotted many not-so-magical faces.
P1020660.jpg

I was very excited for this bridge. It was closed last year.
P1020662.jpg

Around 8pm we found an open spot along a fence in Canada and waited for Illuminations.
P1020668.jpg

As soon as the show was over, we booked it over to The Land for Soarin’. We avoided this ride last summer because of the wait time but thought we would give it a try during EMH. The line was already 45 minutes when we arrived. I enjoyed the ride but wouldn’t wait that long again. After leaving Soarin’, we grabbed dinner at Seasons and hopped on Living with the Land boat ride. It was cool to tour the greenhouses at night and wonderful to sit down after standing in line for Soarin’.

We hit Spaceship Earth on our way out and boarded a monorail back to the TTC. I knew transportation would be available up to 1.5 hours after closing. I had mistakenly assumed that meant ALL transportation. I’m sure you all know the monorail we needed to get back to the MK and on to the resort boat for the Fort was not opened. MK had closed at 9pm that night. One of the workers at the monorail station informed us that we should have taken a bus to the Fort from Epcot. However, he made a phone call. Another monorail worker picked us up from the TTC in a van, drove over to the Fort, and dropped us off in front of the path to the marina to get our bikes. We had to bike back to our site in the 1800 loop after midnight. Very exciting night! And boy, we felt stupid! Back at the marina I spotted some Fort history; the Lawnmower tree!

Day 2-May 29:

We spent the morning at Blizzard Beach. It was our first time at a Disney water park. I enjoyed the theme and decorations. We rode Summit Plummet, one doubles slide at Runoff Rapids, one slide at Snow Stormers, made a full loop in the Cross Country Creek, floated around in Melt-Away Bay and then left when we saw lightning in the distance. No pictures from that day. Between the storm and crowds, we didn’t have a chance to do much.

We drove back to the site, showered, and biked to the marina to catch the ferry. We grabbed food at Cosmic Ray’s and then rode TTA, Buzz, Carousel of Progress, and Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor. It started raining while we were in CoP. We had left our rain jackets back at the site and brought our .78 emergency ponchos from our original clearance trip at Target. Not the best source of protection and I bet we looked hilarious peddling back to the site in green plastic, but we stayed remotely dry. We had planned on grilling burgers but ended up using the stove and griddle pan.

Gross storm heading in.

Space Mountain had broken down (stand-by has no number)

I'm sorry if these spoil the magic for anyone! I enjoy seeing behind the scenes.

These were thrown away asap.

After we cleaned up and dried out, we drove over to DHS around 9pm to catch the 10:30 showing of Fantasmic. A male CM was yelling that the 9pm show was full to capacity. A line had not formed yet for the second showing. We walked to ToT and jumped in the 10 minute stand-by line. DH rode and I opted to exit when he boarded. After he survived, we grabbed ice cream and waited in the short line. At 9:30, we started walking down the path towards the theater. We got seated in the Mickey section at 9:45. I think there were 3 or 4 completely empty sections. I would recommend the second showing when possible. We drove back to the Fort and I started to notice a sore throat developing. Foreshadowing…

P1020704.jpg

I noticed as the boat was almost finished circling the water, all the lights went off the ship and all the characters ran into the middle to hide. All except Ariel sitting on the back there. Someone had thrown a black hooded cape over her. Guess it took too much time to carry her and her fin :lmao:

Day 3-May 30:

This was our actual anniversary! I had planned on having a relaxing day but things didn’t happen quite right. We left the site around 11am and drove to MK. First thing we did was get a FP for Space Mountain. The return time was already up to 4:50pm  We grabbed some Mickey bars and rested in the shade.
P1020711.jpg

I had never visited Toontown and I wanted to see it before it was gone. We took the walking path from Tomorrowland and saw Mickey and Minnie’s houses.
P1020713.jpg

P1020714.jpg

We then rode to train to Frontierland. The lines for Splash and Big Thunder were 45 and 60. No thanks. We walked through Adventureland and I started to notice I felt really bad. Coughing, lightheadedness, and a more intense sore throat. We decided to head out to the car and find a walk-in clinic. While searching with my iPhone and GPS, a WDW security car pulled up and offered to call the paramedics. My condition was certainly not that serious and just needed some antibiotics. We asked for the location of the closest walk-in clinic and he told us it would be Centra Care near DTD. Instead of giving us an address for the GPS, he brought over a cast atlas with the location circled. The atlas was very cool. It showed the entire WDW property, all the CM areas for each park, and even included a map for the MK utilidors. I loved this little sneak peek into secret areas and it cheered me up a little.

P1020755.jpg

We went to Centra Care and altogether it took two hours for medicine and a diagnosis for an Upper Respiratory Infection. I was expecting as much because the same thing happened last year during our July trip. It was a Sunday-Saturday trip and I had to find a Centra Care on Thursday for similar symptoms. I joked with DH that I was allergic to WDW and needed to book a Dr’s visit into the planning schedule. I guess my body is very susceptible to all the germs floating around WDW. On the bright side, I was already in their computer system and didn’t have to waste time with paperwork!

photo5.jpg

Our visit to the doctor was finished and we headed back to MK to use our Space Mountain fast passes. We got another set for 10:40pm before we headed inside. The FP line took about 15 minutes to board. While we were waiting, two teens in front of us gave us another set for 10:35pm that they didn’t want. We drove back to the Fort after our first ride and cooked our anniversary dinner of sirloin, corn on the cob, and Hawaiian sweet rolls. So delicious! Everything tastes better when camping. After cleaning up, we drove back to MK for EMH (12am-3am).

P1020722.jpg

We brought the top of the wedding cake from the freezer. We kept it inside the tent with A/C but the frosting still melted.
P1020723.jpg

We watched Wishes from Tomorrowland near the speedway so we could be close for our fastpasses. It wasn’t the best view and the car noises definitely ruined the magical effect :sad1: But we knew we could see the show again in September and didn’t worry. After our second ride on Space Mountain, we had had enough. We gave away our inherited FPs to a couple gawking at the 80 minute stand-by line and rode TTA again. By that time, the 11pm showing of Spectromagic was going on. It took a while for us to reach Frontierland after navigating the parade traffic. We made it to Splash Mountain around 11:30 and walked right on. Big Thunder was next and it was listed as 20 minutes but we walked on as well. We headed to Adventureland and EMH had started when we reached Pirates. The rest of the night went wonderfully. We rode Pirates, Jungle Cruise (much better at night), Aladdin, Dumbo, Mickey’s PhilharMagic, Snow White, and Peter Pan. The most we waited was 10 minutes for Snow White. It was my first time riding Aladdin and Dumbo. I would never wait during the day to ride these. This may change once I have kids but even then I might wait for EMH. We stopped at the Main Street Bakery for a snack and then found Mickey and Minnie outside Sir Mickey’s store. The line for pictures was 5 minutes. The photopass photographer took her picture and then used our camera to take a picture. We ended our evening on that note and headed back to the Fort around 2:30am.

View from waiting in the picture line.

It was so nice being able to stroll around MK. No fighting crowds, no lines, no other people in my pictures :thumbsup2

Day 4-May 31:

We set an alarm for 9am, showered, packed up, and left by 10:30. We didn’t want to fight any crowds at the parks and opted for a DTD visit. We bought our Christmas ornament, ate at Earl of Sandwich (loved it!), bought a tube of bath bombs at Basin, a set of drink coasters at World of Disney, and then trekked over to Disney Quest. It was our first trip here and we had not heard good reviews. We gave it a chance since it was included in our annual passes. Our first and only ride was virtual Space Mountain. DH become nauseated and had to leave. He’s fine on regular coasters but I guess the enclosure and screen was too much. We decided to head back home after that. The drive back seemed to take forever! The pre-arrival anticipation makes the drive much easier. I tried to sleep on and off to rest my body but it didn’t work so well. We got back home around 10pm and brought everything inside, sorted laundry, and fell asleep.

We really enjoyed our first visit to the Fort. I wish we had spent more time exploring it. We only saw things from the sidewalks we biked on between the marina and our 1800 loop. Our next trip in July will be for 5 nights. Hopefully we can take things slowly and really experience everything offered.

We were so full on Sunday from our dinner. We didn't even want to touch the cake. We tried it in the car at DTD. It was not the best idea to bring it camping but we had to try since it was the anniversary trip. I wish I had seen the top before it was packed up so I could compare images. Oh well :)

That's all for my trip report. Any feedback and suggestions for future trips, please share! I hope people enjoyed reading. I didn't go into the trip planning to write a report but it was fun to come back home and relive the trip.

Great trip report ! Looking forward to more and hope you enjoy your next stay at the Fort even more.

I still remember how freezer burnt our wedding cake top tasted on our first anniversary - but we only got to enjoy ours at the in-laws house not at Disney.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for sharing! We'll be at the Fort in exactly 7 days, so your photos have helped with the anticipation :)

rm0530- Great job on this trip report! Great photos! And you even have some behind the scenes stuff in there too (Space Mountain and the Castmember Atlas-I have never seen one of those, but I sure could use one from time to time).

I am awarding you an A+ on your first trip report!

It looks like you and DH did a great job planning, and that your future trips will only be better. What a great place to go on your first anniversary. Congratulations to you and the DH!

I would like to make a motion that you two start the tradition of visiting the Fort for every anniversary! What a great tradition that would be for you.

All in favor, say Aye!

We will be back June 30-July 5. I don't know how my SIL and her BF will do. As of now, they only have a tent that we have set up and sealed for them. I should come back with an interesting report :rotfl:

The actual cake part tasted how I remembered. The frosting gave us some worries about being spoiled and making me sicker. We didn't eat much but it was a nice tradition I'm glad we did.

Thanks Frank! I had fun writing it. I'm going to load up on multi-vitamins before my next trip and hope I don't have to pay Centra Care again.

I hope you have a wonderful trip! Remember the bug spray. I have multiple bites that have been giving me grief.

I wish we had seen more of the Fort but we were very impressed with what we saw. Be sure to come back with pictures for us!

Way cool report, thanks for sharing! Great lookin couple too, Happy Anniversary! :cool1:

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed reading it.

I appreciate the A+! It was much nicer to go with just the two of us rather than our 6 member family group we'd done twice before. Trying to get 6 opinions to agree doesn't work well.

I'm all in favor of an annual Fort tradition. DH is already talking about how we will probably renew our passes since it's cheaper. I expect y'all will be hearing a lot from me :goodvibes

Let me know if you decide to rig up an A/C unit and how it goes. I was very pleased with our method. It made the trip very relaxing knowing I wouldn't die of heat exhaustion in my sleep. Under Armour, Camelbacks, and Chilly Pads can only do so much.

Great trip report and loved the photos, it is helping me get ready for our trip i n a few weeks we will be there from July 1st to July 8th can't wait seems so far away hard to believe its only a few weeks.

Congrats and nice TR. We were there the 22nd to the 29th. It was an anniversary trip for us too (10 yrs on the 27th).

Thanks for the trip report! I really enjoyed reading it and seeing your pictures. Happy Anniversary!

Great trip report and Happy 1st Anniversary. We will spending our 30th Anniversary at The Fort in August. I wish you many, many more.

What type of accommodations are you staying at? I've requested the 1500 loop to be closer to things. Our bike rack can hold 3 bikes max. DH's sister thought he was serious and didn't take to well to the suggestion that her and her BF start practicing riding on one bike :rolleyes1

Congrats and nice TR. We were there the 22nd to the 29th. It was an anniversary trip for us too (10 yrs on the 27th).

Where were you at? Congratulations on your anniversary!

I only noticed one set of red and blue Mickey rope lights. Green ears were hiding.

Great trip report and Happy 1st Anniversary. We will spending our 30th Anniversary at The Fort in August. I wish you many, many more.

Wow, 30 years! Congrats!

Great pics and super great TR. I thoroughly enjoyed your trip! Congrats on the 1st Anniversary. We will be celebrating our 15th just before our WDW trip, but the CM at WDW ressies, said it was close enough...and she put CELEBRATING ANNIVERSARY on our ressies! :thumbsup2 Ya'll did a lot of our favorite things! Glad you got to cross the barrel bridge! :goodvibes

BTW, sorry you had to make a trip to urgent care. Bummer. :flower3:
