Four a.m came quickly, and I was surprised when a smiling Boo appeared at the side of my bed before I was able to force myself to rise. He didn't know where we were going, but he knew we had an early birthday surprise planned for him this day. As I quickly dressed and packed up the few toiletries we would need for the trip, he followed me, desperately trying to figure out what was in the works.
His best guess was that we were going for donuts and then a swim at the YMCA.
Even Sis was unable to escape the feeling of excitement and happiness that flooded our house that morning. She had woken while we were dressing her, and though I'm certain she didn't understand any of what was going on, she quickly mimicked her brother's giddiness.
We had loaded our suitcase and stroller into the car the night before, so it took no time at all to gather our crew into the car to leave for the airport. Though the car had been stored in our garage overnight, the seat felt hard and frozen when I sat down, and I quickly turned on the seat warmer and read the thermostat.
-32 degrees.
Our headlights reflected off the asphalt in the darkness, making the road appear icy and slippery. I resisted the urge to tell Dix to drive carefully and instead busied myself with snapping pictures of the kids in the backseat. Their eyes were wide and excited, and both kids gave me the rare privelege of willing smiles at the camera.
My new camera was working like a dream and I was impressed at how the flash kept up in the darkness.
As we approached the airport, Boo said, Hey, were going to the airport. We only go to the airport if we are going to Nanas House or Disney world.
We arent going to Nanas house, I told him.
There was a silence, and I could see the other optionDisney World-- quickly flash through his mind, but he seemed to shove the idea away as quickly as it had come. A trip to Disney World was out of the question, and to even suggest it would bring rejection for sure so he didn't say a word.
As we pulled up at the airport drop-off, a van quickly pulled up behind us and a man jumped out and ran to the drivers side of our car. My husband and I stepped out, wondering what the urgency was.
Ive been behind you for the past five minutes, and I saw the laser lights in your car. He sounded very accusing.
Im sorry, what? Dix was confused.
The red laser lights. And then something that looked like a flashing light.
Both Dix and I were very aware of the latest wave of incidents in which someone had been shining laser lights at pilots during take-off and landing. Like the rest of the world, we had heard of it on the news and were concerned about terrorist threats to planes.
I was especially concerned.
My brother is a pilot.
Dix was becomming very defensive. No, not defensive. Mad. He started to say something back to the man, and then I realized the flashing light he was talking about must be my camera flash. After all, I had been taking pictures all the way to the airport of the kids faces as they tried to guess their surprise.
I pulled my camera out of its bag. Ive been taking pictures on my camera. Were you seeing the flash?
The man immediately started laughing. Thats it, he said. Thats what I saw. You took a lot of pictures.
Dix and I started to laugh as well, nervous and relieved. There we were at 4:45 am standing in 32 degree weather discussing whether we were terrorists with laser lights, when in reality we are just middle aged folks with kids headed to Disney World.
I didnt realize until I looked at my camera in the airport that when it is using flash in the dark, it actually does shine about 10 red laser lights at the subject as it autofocuses. Since I had the camera on the kids faces almost the entire way to the airport, the red lights must have been shining out the back window during most of the drive. That poor mans adrenaline must have been racing as he saw us heading to the airport, thinking he had found the source of the FBIs much wanted laser suspects.
