OK, so we are less than two weeks away from a wonderful AKL concierge vacation with the whole family and I sprain my foot!!!

OK, not a big deal. I just figured that with all the great luck we have had with this trip this was a small taste of bad luck to balance the score.

My daughter broke her leg 4 days before our trip in June. I thought this would of been a really difficult vacation but it turned out to be the BEST!

First, before you leave get a handicapped parking tag from the BMV. This allows you to park very close to the parks. Usually, we parked in the first row! You can get into the parks faster!

Then arrange for a wheelchair. There are several companies that rent in Orlando (I cannot remember the company we used). They will deliver and pick up the wheelchair. A backpack on the back of the wheelchair worked wonders. We loaded it with snacks and raincoats.

When you get to the parks you can get a brochure that tells you which lines are okay for wheelchairs and which lines you will need to go thru a different entrance. In MK most of the lines we bypassed. In Epcot, AK, MGM most of the time we waited in the lines.

Seating for the shows may be different too!

Some of the biggest and most fun memories we share involved the characters. They carried her, sat on her lap, and tickled her toes.

Don't let the sprain get you down. It will be a different vacation - but a very good one!

By the way - one caution, watch out for wet floors if using crutches. My daughter insisted in getting out of her chair while we took refuge from a storm. She had a bad spill!

What a bummer!

But at least you can get a ride thru the parks. I'm always jealous of my little one in the stoller wishing I was the one getting pushed around.

I know I'm a nervous wreck about my 8yo DD who has a soccer tournament the weekend before we go. That would be just my luck for her to get hurt. But I have to keep remembering that it's not the end of the world and we could still have a great time. I'm sure you will too!

Thanks for the good wishes!!

I guess I should have mentioned that it was a MINOR sprain and that I was just whining to get some attention...and no my DW is not behind me making me type this!!

I did it at work and the nurse at the medical dept. wrapped it up for me. I was able to work another 10 hrs with just a little pain. I thought that I would loosen the wrap (ooohhh I can hear all those folks out there saying "No don't do that you goof!). BIG mistake!! good thing I put it right back into my boot and tied it up tight. I could feel it swell up.

I'm much better this moring, but I must go in for more overtime tonight....(in a zombie-esque voice) "Must Pay Mouuuuse":earseek:

I have a bad sprain in my foot and I did it 6 weeks ago. I have been trying to stay off of it but well I actually need to walk to get things done. I am still taking ibuprophren and it still hurts at night. We are going to DW in October and I am hoping that it will be better by then. They said that it could have a small tear in the ligament so it will take a longer time to heal. I wonder why they don't just give you an air cast and tell you to use it for a few weeks. I got sport orthodics and have been using them inside my sneakers when I am walking around. I hope that this will help I leave in 2 weeks and 2 days and you know what the last few days before vacations are like. I won't be resting my foot for sure.

Shooks if it ain't bad enough for a wheel chair I'd be glad to kick it a few times for ya LOL. My DW got bit by a spider or something on our last trip and her foot swelled up to big to wear a shoe so I rented a wheel chair inside the park and wheeled her around and that was the best day we had that trip (Even got to run over some toes from poeple that stepped right in front of the wheelchair and did flat stops-yes poeple do this and some times I could not stop that quick)

I'm sure it may be uncomfortable for a few days but once you get to the world it we be much better. ;) ;) ;)

We will be staying at the AKL concierge also in Dec. I hope you can give us poor Dis members a report when you get back. :sunny:

I sprained my ankle/food 2 weeks ago and it still really hurts!
We are leaving in a little over 2 weeks. I am freaking out! I hate the thought of being pushed around in a wheelchair and what about swimming? Any suggestions/advice would be appreciated!

:( :( :( :( :(

I don't think you should have any problem with swimming... just sit on the side of the pool and ease in. By then, your ankle should be about back to normal. Just take an ace wrap and wear good supportive athletic shoes for extra support.

Don't worry about those trip reports...I love doing them and my pad and paper are ready to go.

If you can get a temporary handicapped tag keep in mind you can valet park at all of the Disney resorts for free:) That's not so bad!!

My advice: go to the doctor NOW for anti-inflammatories. Mine gave me Naproxen, and I might have saved some pain/hobbling if I'd gone as soon as I sprained it.

(2 1/2 weeks later, it's still stiff and sore, but I don't need one of those Slow Moving Vehicle signs on my back any more.);)

Have fun at the World!:Pinkbounc

Hey - I'll sprain my foot if I can go to WDW next week. LOL!

Jdads2, glad to hear that it wasn't anything serious. I hope you're much better by the time your trip officially begins. By the way, my daughter tripped in our living room and slammed her mouth into our coffee table a few days before one of our WDW trips. It was pretty bad. Luckily, we were able to go ahead with our trip. She wound up losing quite a few teeth within a month or so of her fall (all the ones that she jarred loose fell out), and she continues to lose them to this day (a few permanent teeth have begun populating the gaping holes in her Jack 'O Lantern mouth). She lost this little beauty while at WDW this past Christmas: click here for photo. The good thing is that she was supposed to lose all of those teeth (she just lost them a few years sooner than the average child). And each time she loses one, I think of that WDW vacation that almost never was. *Sigh*

Have a lovely time at the AKL. Since you're staying in concierge, I must admit that I'm not feeling too sorry for you (hee hee). They'll spoil you rotten. ;)

Gosh..I sure didn't find anything to be happy about in a wheel chair at Disney. I have real respect for those who have to stay in 'em!
I broke my foot a couple of years ago, days before our trip. I wish I had stayed home! First of all the handicap parking was terrible. We would have been better off paking in the regular lot and taking the tram. The handicap isn't all that close to parks. I was told after the fact, that if I had shown my handicap sticker to the person parking us, he would have put us on the end, nearest the tram in regular parking. Then we tried one of the electric carts (a bit pricey, I thought). The battery went dead a couple of times, and we had to wait by it, for them to come fix it. It was so hard getting through the people (and this was January!), and when I had to back up, people acted like I wasn't there. We switched to a wheelchair, which was easier for me (harder on my daughter and hubby), and found people thought the place where my feet go, was a jumping vault. I went to the parade two hours early to get a handicap spot, and still had people stand in front of me. The worse experience? Going to the front of some of the lines, where the wheelchair wouldn't fit in the regular lines, and having to hear all the crude and rude remarks people make about how they wish they had a wheelchair and could cut the line. My poor little grandson was hanging his head after the first few times, and at one point said he's stay out of the ride with me, so we wouldn't have to hear the remarks. So many people asked if I had to rent my cast, and where could they go to get one, that I was ready to hit them with it. My family (three others) offered to go through the line if I could just wait for them, but the CM's said no, they didn't want me to wait. People in line were not happy to hear that.
We didn't take advantage of the Valet parking, because hubby could just drop me off, an then go park. We did ask at one place if we could use it, and he said, well, if you really need to..and we really didn't need to. I had crutches.

I cannot believe that people actually gave you a hard time about your cast! I honestly cannot remember one remark that was unkind towards my daughter. Of course she is just a child and maybe people are more sensitive to children coming to Disney with a broken bone.

Again, I thought the parking was great. The one park that did require some patience getting to was MK. You parked and then had to take the monorail. We were there in June and we parked in the front row at every park every day.

Some bad things did happen to my daughter though as a result of her leg. One time a CM who was hurrying to restart Buzz Lightyear ride pushed by her while she was standing using crutches. She took a big fall and got a bruise. She was a good sport about that though. Also another time, at the Christmas Shop in Frontierland she took a fall. This fall was completely her fault - the floor was wet and she insisted on getting out of the chair. Again, she was a good sport.

We were there in June and we parked in the front row at every park every day.

We didn't luck out with front rows! Or even if we got close, they weren't all that close. It was a hike. At MGM, they parked us in the Handicap near where the C's go in, since the regular one was full. AK handicap, if I remember right was a longer walk than I wish I had taken, and Epcot..didn't you have to walk down and under the monorail to get to the front..if you had a car? Seems to me, that the tram dropped you right off front..but handicap had to walk a bit. One day we took the bus, thinking that would be better..but they wouldn't let me take the rental wheel chair out to the bus stop..we had to turn it in first, and the bus was a long wait, and when it came, it parked below where the stop was, and so many people pushed, and shoved to get on, we had to wait for another bus...and we had been at the front of the line...now we were at the other end <g>.
I'm sure there is a big diff between a child in a wheelchair and an adult.I know that my last few trips this year, I have been very patient with wheel chairs and have a new respect for what the people have to go through at Disney. It is not worth it to get on the rides faster.

Sending you pixie dust for a quick recovery! You'll still have fun!!
