Anyone ever do this?? I fell down my deck stairs on Sunday - didn't get it checked till Tuesday - it if fractured and they told me it would take 4-6 weeks to heal then I have to see an orthopedist.
If you have had this please let me know how the healing process went - I'm still pretty uncomfortable - they put me out of work for at least 1 week...

DH broke his last year (fell down icy steps at a Verizon building) and it actually never healed properly. He still sits on a donut when driving and has problems sitting down for long periods of time.

When I was in 7th grade, we were having an *unsupervised* cheerleading practice after school. Being the only one under 90 pounds, I was a flyer (in stunts). There was a mean pair of twins that were showing my bases (the people who are on the bottom of the stunts actually holding flyers up). We were doing a full libery which is a full extension over the bases heads and I was standing on one foot (pictured below):

Jennifer (the meanest twin) decided that when I was doing the stunt would be a perfect time to tickle her sister, Jessica. Needless to say, I started falling when Jessica's arms buckled. I fell and my spotter was the only one who tried to catch me. Her knee went straight in to my tailbone. Best part is they left me out there laying on the ground. My mom came looking for me, took me to the hospital, I got x-rays and found out my tailbone was cracked. All they could do for me was tell me to rest and sit on a "doughnut" to keep pressure off my tailbone. Needless to say, we weren't allowed to do stunts anymore unless our sponsor was out with us.

I still get REALLY bad aches in my lower back. What can ya do? :confused3

having difficulty sitting for too long - wondering if I will be able to go back to work next week....

DH was able to go back to work after a week but needed to use the donut plus a pillow.

If you look at the bean bag in my sig picture- that's actually made out of memory foam like the tempra (sp?) pedic mattresses and it's actually the only thing DH can sit comfortably on without a donut for a long period of time. I think they might also make furniture pads similar to mattress toppers.

I hurt mine several years ago...it took along time before I could sit without taking my breath - it is a very different pain!
I still have trouble with mine - certain chairs, etc. Can't sit for long periods.

Others I've talked to say there's still bothers them years later too.

But hopefully, he'll come off the donut in a few weeks.

Four to six weeks? That's a very optomistic doctor.

I broke my tailbone almost exactly 13 months ago. It's easy to remember the day because it broke during childbirth. :) Mine still hurts, some days more than others. Within a few weeks it will get much, much better, and he'll probably be able to endure sitting a lot easier, but breaking your tailbone is very painful. I still occassionally get tears in my eyes when I go from sitting to standing. My doctor said I needed to get an injection of an anti-inflamatory directly in my tailbone, but I will say that I don't think it hurts badly enough to do that.

I hope you do feel better soon. From the research I've done, some people do recover completely, but having some pain for a long time isn't uncommon.

I broke my tailbone 3 times in my life, and trust me, it is a pain you will feel for a LONG time. I think the last time it took about 3 years to completely heal and the pain doesn't just GO away.

Just take a deep breath while sitting, find a comfy position (if that is possible) donuts help, and no, not the ones you get at Dunkin Donuts or Krispy Kreme, lol, but those styraphome ones if you can find one, and PILLOWS! LOTS OF PILLOWS!!!

Good luck and hope you feel better soon.

Once, I thought I completely busted up my butt. Upon further inspection, I found it was just a crack.

I fell out of a tree I was climbing when I was 12 and broke my tailbone. I am 37 now and still have to sit on a pillow sometimes. :guilty:

I broke my tailbone many years ago when I was rollerblading down a hill. I feel when I was nearly to the bottom. Luckily my aunt is a nurse. She told me "welcome to the club" and that there was nothing a doctor could do so I didn't go to the doctors (oh I love having a nurse aunt and a nurse mom).
My tailbone doesn't bother me that much. It only hurts when I sit for long times or if I sit in certain position. Usually, if I shift myself around, then I can make myself comfortable again. I'm thinking though of getting something to sit on cause sometimes it starts to bug me when I have to drive home (which is a 7 hour drive).

Paula,
That's not what all the old men down at the Legion tell me. They are still talking about your "Dance of the Seven Veals." Six of them required extra oxygen - they say you were that good.

Well -- until the 'incident' where one of your veals became unattached from your costume and fell to the floor.

You poor thing - you were dancing and flailing with such primal abandon that you didn't realize that the left shank had deserted you -- until you slipped on the hunk of meat and crashed to the floor.

I hear that it was quite a sight to see -- the men lined the sidewalks and the building and gave you a hero's sendoff as you were loaded into the ambulance! :Pinkbounc

I feel for you! I broke mine when I was 12. I'm 40..almost 41 and mine still hurts. Get used to not being able to sit for long periods of time. I have to use a "butt pad" when we drive to WDW...takes us 7 hours. Good luck and try to take it easy.

Ouch, this happened to my 11 yo DD just 4 weeks ago. I'll tell you what I've learned so far:
1.Make sure you have Xrays and take them to a Physical Therapist for exercises, it will help with the healing.
2. Ask the PT if it's possible to move it back into place after the swelling subsides, this should keep it from hurting for years to come. This can be tricky, since all the goodies that once held it in place are now probably torn. Having it put in place is not fun, but not too painful, they do it with their finger and I'm sure you can guess how they access it.
3. The DR will most likely tell you to let it heal where it is, this is where the years of pain come from.
Good Luck!

OMG Pam - now it hurts from laughing - veils - veils - who knew I wasn't supposed to be dancing with baby cows........

Sorry it's hurting you to laugh, though.... :guilty: My bad!

That was one of my famous YaYa typos! A few years ago I was spinning one of my yarns and wrote that I had performed the Exotic Dance of the Seven VEALS instead of veils - of course lilboo caught it and never let me forget my faux pas!

Pain from tailbone injuries can last for years. I hope you recover quickly. :)

i did this a year-18months ago when i fell half way down the 2nd floor stairs of my house, i was bruised for like 6 months & it still acts up on me. it was so painful going to stand. i started going to the chiropractor about 4 months ago because it had put my spine off & was causing back spasms. its still healing but im feeling better now.
