OUCH !! Airline prices

I have looked at several different Airports(DTW,LAN,GRR,FNT,MSB)and Wow are the price high.

We are booked and wanted to go Christmas Week(23-30)but the price for 2 people .
I looked at different dates but not much better.
And 1 way tickets are just as bad.

Too far from my home to drive to either Chicago or Ohio.

I would just keep checking. I have a similar timeframe and I check every single day. Gas is high. Diesel is even higher and economy is nuts. You might catch a special sale here or there, but things are only going to get higher, IMO. I am hoping at the 6-month mark we might get a break.

I check almost every day. It get depressing, but I'm also hoping at the 6 month mark it drops a whole lot more than it is now.

Air travel around major holidays has always been expensive and isn't something new for just this year. With the large number of people traveling either to visit relatives or vacation on those days, seats fill up quickly and once a given fare category sells out, the fare jumps to the next higher price bracket. Generally, as soon as you know you are going to travel around a major holiday is the best time to buy your tickets. Airlines are unlikely to offer sales on peak travel days when they can already fill the airplanes with those wanting to travel and pay full price.

You will also find the most desirable times and/or non-stop flights will sell out first. Once those are gone, you might only be left with traveling at a time that isn't your first choice.

I understand all of that. The problem is I have been looking for months and the prices have not dropped . I am not paying $700-$800 per person around trip from Michigan to Florida and that is my choice. Its nuts, and I don't care what the market is saying.

Delta shows $528/person for those days. If you aren't locked into those exact dates, there are other cheaper fares still available.

Still thats $1056.00 for 2 people, that more than double of what we paid last year same time frame.
We're locked in for now, but more than likely we're gonna have to just not do Christmas week.
This will be over our 41st wedding anniversary , just the shame we may not be able to make it.

As was also previously suggested, you could look at changing your outbound/return dates by a day and get in the $400/person range as well.

I would suggest setting up Google flight alerts for both the round trip price and the individual one ways. I think everyone is trying to find deals to just about anywhere and airlines just aren't giving them this far out. But on the off chance a good deal does come up, you want to be quick on the trigger to grab it.

Flights will be historically high for a while.

Check often, my flight to LAX went from 1750.00 for 4 about a year out, to 2800.00.

Waited till 2 months before and got it for 2300.00.

saw a low of 2100.00 about 4 months out.

Its just a matter of what you wanna pay.

3. Be FLEXIBLE. You may want the non-stop that leaves at 10am, but so does everyone else. Leaving at 6am (or 6pm) and making a connection could save you hundreds also.

Our flight from DTW lands late at night, so we’re staying at the airport hyatt and still saving more money than if we would fly Saturday.

Thanks for the tip! I'll try that, too. I'm also flying around that time and I have lots of AMEX miles built up. But I know my prices and $958 (FC) out of DTW is WAY too high. It's normally around $500.

(update) OMG! I love you, KMOEHALL!! I found a $963 RT, flying out of AZO on Friday night! (FC) I didn't want to drive to DTW but it was looking like that's what I should do. Thank you!!

I’m going late October. I really wanted FNT since I’m only about 15 minutes south of there. Those prices out of FNT are a bit shocking. I finally but the dust for $318.00 RT per person out of DTW. To get that price I had to book the 6:10am return flight Normally book afternoon flights coming home into DTW. That is a Saturday to Saturday flight. Used to book for half of that. It was surprising how giddy I was when I saw the $318.00 per person The pricing hasn’t came down any since I booked and has only went up. I booked in April.

Allegiant has flights into Sanford (and Tampa clearwater), prices are good if there's an Allegiant hub near you.

as others have suggested…

xmas has always been ‘the holy grail’ that prices out the majority of us from traveling then. If anything, in my market, the prices haven’t increased quite as much as run of the mill flights.

Time to consider:

*altering departure a day or two either way

*driving a few hours to possibly substantially cheaper airport (SFB or TPA)

*look at discount carriers you wouldn’t consider in the past

*& price connecting flights

Lastly,

depending on the number of people in your party…initially price out the flights for one person only. Then add additional parties until you see price bump. Then, book just for the ones at the cheaper flight. Rinse & repeat the rest of your group. If you mess up, always have 24 hours to cancel & start anew lol
