I was wondering if you can use the points at other disney hotel other than the DVC hotel. I would like to stay at the AKL and wondering if it would be cheaper to rent points if it is possible to use the points on at other hotels.

Point requirements for a non-DVC resort is very high. You'll more than likely come out much cheaper renting directly from Disney.

I have never fully understood this point of view. Are you saying that it is cheaper to make a cash reservation from Disney and then rent out your own points and in this scenario you would be better off?

I have never used points outside of my DVC resorts, so I ask out of curiousity. I do however think there might be a time where we use them at another Disney resort outside of DVC. From a value stand point I understand I "get" more within my DVC resorts but then again I won't have to pay cash for my Grand Floridian reservations.

That's right. All it takes is a little initiative and you'll come out way ahead.

makdyn: even at rack rate, it is cheaper to reserve thru disney than rent points (assuming $10 per point) from DVC. Rack rate for a standard room at AKL is $256, including tax, for mid-July (value season for deluxe). The points for that same room are 29. which at $10 per point would cost $290. And that is for the weekday; to rent points for the weekend would cost $520 per night.

On the other hand....
You have paid for your DVC points. Figuring $5 per point dues for the year (I know that's too high, but I don't want to mess with the math, so I'm rounding) the 29 points would be $145 at most and no tax. Even the weekend night would be $260 (again no tax so you are still better off than rack rate). IF you aren't going to use the points for something else before they expire AND you don't want to mess with renters, using the points really isn't that bad an idea. Granted I am not figuring in the buy in cost of the points, but as DH the economist says, that is a sunk cost at this point.

Renting your points has it's own cost - depends on how much you value your time and how much aggravation you are willing to put up with.

Don't let the worry-warts dissuade you. Aggravation is rarely part of the equation.
