Does anybody know what happens if your kindle or nook crashes? Do you loose all the books that you have bought? I tend to save books I enjoy on my shelf and re-read them and have been pondering a Kindle but this is my biggest concern. Anybody know?

No, you don't. Your books are also stored on their website/your account for redownload. Also so you can download them to another device such as your PC or ipod or phone or ...

All the major retailers store your books on their servers for re-download.

It is highly recommended that everybody keep their own back-up copies because retailers can and do go out of business and stop their service. It has happened a couple of times already - recently with Harper Collins when they decided to stop download service to their customers who bought from them directly. Personally, I take the DRM off of every book I buy and back it up to my own computer system so I am guaranteed to always be able to read my books.

I think anybody with a nook especially needs to keep this in mind if they are interested in keeping their books forever. Barnes and Noble is not in the greatest of financial shape. I imagine that if they "went under" another company would probably buy their eBook division and it would hopefully be a seamless transition for their customers .. but who knows?

Thanks so much....I figured that others were concerned about this and that there must be a way, if I can download to my computer that would solve the problem. Hmmmm....to buy or not to buy.....where is the best deal on the kindle? :rotfl: I should have paid more attention to those deal threads.

If you have the colorless Nook you should be able to store all your books in an SD card as well. I don't remember if Nookcolor has SD expansion or not.

I, too, strip the DRM and back up the files. This guarantees my ability to read my books beyond the life/type of any e-reading device I may have.

OK now there's stripping and DRMs involved.....you have pretty much lost me.:rotfl: How about I buy the kindle and than you guys can just tell me what to do with it.....that's pretty much how my DH handles me and the DVR. That is another concept I have yet to master......:lmao:

If you are going to order the Kindle, do it now. Word has it that Oprah will be promoting the Kindle 3 (and giving each audience member one) on Monday's show. When Oprah did this in 2008 they sold out within a day.

Also, Amazon gives you 30 days to use and return the device, though you won't want to return it. See also: The number of refurbished Nooks flooding the market vs. the lack of refurbished Kindles over the past 6 months.
