My DD is going to start kindergarten next month and she will be attending a year round school. Her track has her only going to school for two weeks before she is tracked out and at camp for 3 weeks (well actually only 2 since we are going to DW for one of those weeks). This is all new to me as she is my first and only child and I know no one who has a child in year round school here as most of our schools are traditional. Does anyone have any good ideas on how to get ease her through the transition of being tracked out? If your child goes to year round do you like it/not like it? Any info would be helfpul as i'm blindly going through this and I want to make this as easy as I can for her.

TIA!! :sunny:

We have been in year round schools for the last 6 years. We chose to put our kids in year round school and we have not regretted it. My daughter has never had a difficult time transitioning from tracking in to tracking out. However, when my son was in kindergarten, he had a very hard time tracking back in the first time. It took him a few days and then he was fine. We have not had any trouble since that initial track in for him. I would not worry too much about how your daughter is going to react. Remember, even though all of this tracking in and out may seem strange to you, your daughter is not going to know anything different. I would act like it is no big deal and I am sure she will be fine.

There are a lot of pros and cons for both traditional and year round schools. In our situation the year round school was far superior to our traditional option and that is how we made the decision to go year round. I will be happy to answer any questions you have. Also, it is great to be able to go to the beach and DW in September and ski in December without having to pull your kids out of school.

You are actually a neighbor of mine. I live in Raleigh. :goodvibes I too choose to apply for year round as it seemed a better fit for my daughter than the traditional schools. You're right that she's not going to know that things are different in a traditional school vs year round calendar since this is going to be all she knows. It's hard for me to grasp all the change though.
Where do you have your kids go when they track out?

I work from home and I have a flexible schedule so I don't always put them in any specific activities during track out. Also, my DD is 13 so she can take care of herself and babysit her brother if necessary. The Y has a good track out camp. Also, here in Wake Forest, Youngs Gymnastics has a fun track out program. I think more and more places are developing track out programs. Sometimes they can be more pricey than the summer programs, but I think that is changing somewhat. We usually go somewhere during each track out. We go to Disney in Sept which is a terrific time. Good luck! Let me know if you have more questions.
