I know this is off-topic, but I was just wondering if anyone has any advice or has been through this at the dentis before......dd, 4 1/2, is having a crown put on one of her back teeth tomorrow. Apparently she chipped the tooth and the crown is needed to avoid getting a cavity. The chip is on the side of the tooth....or rather between the teeth. She will be taking an oral medication for sedation......and then "laughing gas" as needed. I am so worried about this. I have to sign a release concerning the sedation....and of course it lists all kinds of things that could happen, but then of course it states these are extemely rare. I am a worry wart.....and I am already having heart palpatations just thinking about tomorrow morning! Does anyone have any advice to share? Thanks!

Relax, your nerves will make your DD get nervous and that is not good for anyone. My DD had to have 2 crowns put on her teeth when she was 2 1/2 because 2 teeth came in with little to no enamel. She did fine and had no problems afterward. Little kid crowns are nothing like adult crowns they are pre-made and they pop them on the tooth after prepping it, nothing like the work involved in an adult.

Is this a permanet tooth? If it is can't they just pull it and wait for the 2nd tooth to come in.It seems like a big expense for a tooth that will fall out in a couple of years?

They don't like to pull the teeth too early or it can really cause havoc with the spacing in the jaw and how the permanent teeth grow in and the bite. A child's crown is no way near as expensive as an adult crown is.

Thanks for the reply! I do not want to worry DD, so I do not want her to see that I am nervous. I guess the part I am worried about the most is the sedation. Not sure what the oral medication tastes like, but DD is so picky about what she drinks......I have a feeling it's going to be hard to get her to drink the medication for the sedation.

The dentist mentioned that if we didn't put the crown in soon...and a cavity developed then we would need to pull the tooth....he then mentioned the spacing issue and that the crown was the easiest way to go. I think we are paying $357 for the crown and a cleaning.

My 4yo had a crown put on with a mini root canal in December. She had a cavity that was close to the nerve. Her dentist just put on a numbing gel before injecting the novacaine in the tooth. She was also given laughing gas but no sedation. My DD was a trooper- she didn't complain at all. If you're nervous about sedation, ask the dentist if it is really necessary. The crown doesn't take long at all to put on. Good luck.

My dd1 had a root canal and a crown when she was just over 3 years old. She bumped into a wall and cracked a tooth, which got very decayed very quickly and couldn't be saved. She had the sedation juice and then gas/novocaine as well. She is developmentally delayed, and I am not sure how much she understood before she went in, but she came out happy as a clam. My dh took her b/c I am terrified of the dentist, and we didn't want her to pick up on that. She came home with a popsicle and a few little toys, and she still loves to go to the dentist. According to her, the dentist can fix all owies.

Good luck!

It's a bit late to re-think, but...different dentists can look at the same tooth and the same child and have VASTLY different plans of action.

We checked out one pediatric dentist, because our son had two teeth grow in brown, then started decaying into nubs. He had all sorts of rude things to say about the family's diet, until he looked in DS's mouth and realized it actually WAS just those two teeth (diet would cause more rampant problems), and one cavity.

However, he's scared of tiny children's reactions, and said that he would require general anesthetic for 2 hours or more, he would pull those two teeth, and probably pull the two sharing the cavity. And put fillings into tiny spots elsewhere (he just called them spots, not even cavities).

We decided he was OUT of his mind, and went through the process of finding another.

This fellow had a private room for little ones or screamers, with a TV in the ceiling playing Finding Nemo. He checked DS with DS's lower half on his lap, and DS's upper half on DH's lap while they sat knee to knee (I had figured out after all those dentist visits that DS was much better off if I am in the waiting room!). On the second visit, he did the big filling with NOTHING. No novo/lidocaine, no gas, NOTHING.

On the third visit, DS *ran* into the treatment room with a big smile, got up on the chair (rather than laps), happily got a shot or two of lidocaine, and had the two teeth pulled in a few minutes' time.

*********
So...treatments can vary, medications can vary. I personally would probably NOT do the crown for something like that. I have a crown for something that required it, and I HATE the dang thing. But when I had it, it only required novocaine, no sedation. I'd likely wait (I've chipped my teeth and they have never become cavities), and if time came for it, have it pulled.

This dentist either knows that your girl flips out, or he's afraid of her flipping out. If it's the latter, I'd rather go to a dentist that starts off with less rather than more (of course, I'm glad this guy isn't jumping to general anesthetic first off!).

I also don't know anything about pediatric crowns, and I don't know if they are doing a root canal first (or if that's needed?), but that might be the part for sedation; I couldn't afford the root canal so I didn't have one (600 each!), so my novocaine might have been because of that...I'm not sure.

Anyway, like I said, it's a bit late, but I always advocate going to as many dentists as it takes, until you find one with whom you agree, and aren't scared about.

No, No, NO!!! And this is the advice of a dentist. Baby teeth are there for a reason, and if you lose a primary (baby) molar too soon, the permanent 6 year molar will come in the wrong place, and subsequently, all other teeth in the mouth will come in the wrong place, creating an orthodontic problem that would not have been so bad had the crown been placed.

If this gives you any solace, we just had a 4 year old patient today and did 2 crowns on his front teeth. He was done in about 30 mins and he did great. Oral sedation and some laughing gas. Let me tell you, the manner in which a child approaches this is very, very dependant on the parent. Just listen to the dentist, your child should be just fine!

Good Luck!:)

My DD who is 6 just went thru two Fridays in a row of having multiple cavities repaired. They thought that they would need to crown one, but were able to repair it with a white filling. She received oral sedation, nitrious oxide and novacaine. She did great the only problem was the first week she cried all the way home due to not liking the way her mouth felt after the novacaine. We both went home and took a 3 hour nap and when she woke up she was fine. The next week she was great with the novacaine knowing that after she took a nap that feeling would be gone.

She is a petite girl with very small teeth that are tight together, so her cavities were all between the teeth. We go back in June to check out the teeth that were worked on and have her tested to see if she has bacteria that makes her more suspetiable to cavities.
