I am getting a kitten from a friend of mine. They are 5 weeks old. I was wondering when I can take it home?

I would say the very minimum would be at six weeks, but eight weeks would be preferable.

If you get a pedigreed kitten from a reputable breeder, they probably won't release the kitten before 12 weeks.

basically whenever they can eat enough cat food without mom's milk to make it.
That's usually around six weeks, can vary a little from kitten to kitten. If mom is a well behaved cat the little could probably learn some good habits from her if left a little longer.

Just got my new baby last weekend at 7 weeks and he's doing great! But, I agree, make sure he/she is already eating solid food -- one kitten that I got wasn't and I didn't know that until I already had him home. That was a nightmare trying to feed him with a dropper!! :sad2:

Eight weeks or when mom weans them. You should never force a weaning. Just like with humans, a kitten (or puppy) will get antibodies from a healthy, vaccinated momma, and the longer they are allowed to nurse, the more they will receive. Momma will be more than happy to let you know when it's time for them to leave the nest.

And like others have expressed, most momma's will also litter pan train the kittens if you give her enough time.
