Oh! I forgot to say that I write and draw on DS's napkin. At the beginning of kindergarten he wasn't reading yet, so I'd mostly draw simple pictures: A smiley face, a basketball, a fish. If there was something going on that day that I could draw a related picture, I'd draw a birthday cake, musical notes, etc. Some days it was a letter of the alphabet, like 'Aa' and an apple, or 'I (heart) YOU'. As they learned new words, I'd try to add those in.
By the end of the year he was reading, so I'd write notes: 'Basketball game tonight' or 'Today is Friday'.
He'd forget and throw away his eating utensils or container of milk, but those silly napkins always came home in his lunchbox.
