OT: What Special thing did you do for your kids when they first started school?

Oh! I forgot to say that I write and draw on DS's napkin. At the beginning of kindergarten he wasn't reading yet, so I'd mostly draw simple pictures: A smiley face, a basketball, a fish. If there was something going on that day that I could draw a related picture, I'd draw a birthday cake, musical notes, etc. Some days it was a letter of the alphabet, like 'Aa' and an apple, or 'I (heart) YOU'. As they learned new words, I'd try to add those in.

By the end of the year he was reading, so I'd write notes: 'Basketball game tonight' or 'Today is Friday'.

He'd forget and throw away his eating utensils or container of milk, but those silly napkins always came home in his lunchbox. :sunny:

Alex2KMommy...thats cute that the napkins always made it home! This will be DD's first time away from us too! SAHM here. These kids grow up too fast....(did i say that already?~)

I just have to say ....All us Moms deserve a big round of hugs...the first day of school.....exciting but emotional. :yay:

Love the cake and ice cream idea. My son starts kindergarten this year as well.

My son had a hard time knowing I wasn't staying at school with him when he started preschool so for the last two years I have given him a band aid to put on his arm or leg. I told him it contains all the hugs and kisses he wanted so when he missed me he could touch his band aid and know I had just given him a kiss. It seemed to work.

Have a great school year everyone.

Before breakfast on the first day of school each year my dad (who was always VERY serious) would come down the stairs, hand each of us kids two sharpened #2 pencils and sing "School days, school days, dear old golden rule days...." He sang the whole song and was all smiles when he did this. We we would always say "Oh Dad!" He did this every I can remember until we went away to college. I remember if fondly. MY DD, 3, just started preschool last week. I felt like crying, but only did it after I pulled away in the car. In PS they don't use pencils, but we definitely got out the video camera. I found that it reallly helps to project an aura of calm around you, even if you are running late. Easier said than done for me! If she is anxious in the morning dropping her off, it will usually manifest itself somehow later. My daughter going to PS for the first time was one of those moments that I really feet like a real grown-up (even though I'm in my early 40's). :)

My mom always took myself and brothers to this place called Show Biz (then it was renamed Major Magics) the night before school started. It was kind of like a Chuck E Cheese type place. We always got pizza and she would give us $10 each for the games. It was kind of like an end of summer celebration (probably more for her than for us ;) )
