OT- What is the difference between the Leapfrog L-Max and the Leapster?

Just wondering if anyone who has either one of these can help me out. What is the difference between the Leapster L-Max and the Leapster Learning System?? They both look alike, but there is a $40 difference between the two. Do they both take different types of games? I wanted to at least order a few games with the TRU sale, so I am trying to figure out which system would be best for my 4 year old dd. Thanks!!

I'm glad you posted this. I was at Toys R Us last night looking at Leapsters. I'd like to know more about them before I buy one too!

the leapster is just a hand held "game boy" and the l-max can be a hand held "game boy" or you can hook it up to a tv and play the games on the screen. we have the plain leapster and that works for us because my kids play them when we are out and about. i guess it all depends on how you want to use them and if the extra $ is worth the extra feature for you. at any rate, my kids love theirs and it is fun and educational for them!!

From my understanding, from my research is that the L-MAX can be connected to a TV. Given the child a bigger screen. The L-MAX games can be used on the normal Leapster. We opted for the Leapster.

Now, I may have my facts a bit off, but I believe the only real difference is that the L-Max can play on the TV as well as on the hand-held unit. Also, they take different software, and from what I remember, the L-Max software was a bit more.

My kids have both (my dad bought them the L-Max after we already had the Leapesters because DS#2 begged grandpap for it ) Anyway, the L-Max does plug into the TV for additional play. It is also much lighter and somewhat smaller than the Leapster. Th4e game catridges are interchangeable, however, L-Max cartridges played in the L-Max have additional features that can't be accessed using the Leapster.

Take a look at Walmart. My Walmart has the L-Max on clearance for $59 (the same price as the Leapster.

Yes, all regular leapster games play in an Lmax, just as all Lmax games can play in a regular leapster. The only difference with playing Lmax games on a regular leapster is that there are some features you can't access.

We have the Lmax and I have to say that we have never ever hooked it up to the tv! He loves the handheld aspect of it. And they do have more games for the regular Leapster(out longer) But I do like that the Lmax can play both games. Looks like I should head over to Toysrus.

also note that the charger for the leapster is seperate -
and when my sons broke and we got him the LMax cuz it was the only one in the store - it won't work on a charging base because it has an adapter to charge it
(THEREFORE it ended up being the same price for the leapster and charging base as it was for the L max)
