OT-What do you use for really bad diaper rash?

I don't know if this was previously mentioned, but don't use wipes. Just use either wet napkins or wash the wipes out. The alcohol in the wipes will make it worse.

We are firm believer in Butt Paste in this household. When my dd (4) was a baby, she got horrible diaper rash. I asked a nurse at church about what she would use, and as far as over the counter stuff, she said whatever had the highest content of zinc oxide. I checked and Butt Paste won. So therefore, that's what worked for us. Usually if I didn't use wipes, and did the butt paste powder combo, the rash was usually gone in like 2 days. I still have 2 tubes of the stuff floating around here, and if something funny comes up I use it, and it works.

Aveno for sensitive skin w/oatmeal for the bath. Works great for all kinds of skin irritations!

Mix Aquaphor and Zinc Oxide Cream in a 50/50 mixture. :thumbsup2 Works great!!! I used this all the time when mine were little and it did the trick. My DD's had very sensitive skin and would chap really easily when wet. I used a thin layer of aquaphor at night too, just for the protective barrier. It works great together when they have a rash. If you can't find just plain Zinc Oxide, Desitin will work too. :goodvibes

half a tube of desitin, a&d ointment, and bacitracin, mix with 2 tablespoons of malox, mix together and put a thin layer on. Used it for 2 girls, my sister used it with her 5 kids and my brother with his child. We all swear by it! An army doc suggested it, it really does work.

After wiping, use a blow dryer on a cool setting to blowdry their bottom. This makes their bottom totally dry (excellent since wetness is the main cause of rash). Then apply the cream of your choice. We just used Aquaphor since all other creams seemed to sting. We kept the blowdryer on the changing table - used it quite often!!

The secret is just getting and keeping their bottom dry.

DS just had a horrible one (open sores). The ped recommended getting something called Domeboro. It comes in little powder packets. You mix it with water and then soak them in it - we made DS sit still in the bath for 15 minutes. Two treatments and it was gone.

I found it in the first aid section at Walgreens

I am taking her into the Pediatrician tomorrow because it is just so bad that she says to me "Mommy please don't clean me". It is worse. Nothing I have tried works. This sounds good as does so many things listed but I can't try them all and let her suffer if they don't work. I will keep you all posted as to what happens tomorrow.
I Thank you all so much for taking the time to reply to me.

Lotrimin AF...yes, for Athlete's foot! :thumbsup2 It's the only thing I used on my kids and it worked wonders--rarely needed it! Doctor recommended it.

my dr told me to make a mixture of aquaphor, plain maalox and some type of athletes foot cream and it worked wonders. My baby's butt was raw and it cleared up in two days.

Oh the poor little thing. Everyone, has given some great replies. I always had good luck with many of the things mentioned....my only advice is don't be skimpy with it. Put it on 1/2 inch thick when it is REALLY red. Everyone always thought I was crazy, but it sure helped clear it up! Good luck........

so I haven't read all the threads, but I wanted to suggest Acidolphus. You can find it at health stores. You can get it in powder form or pills. It orally taken but it does wonders. The powder can also be put in the bath tub to soak in.

Poor baby  There is a prescription called Vusion that works wonders. The pediatrician can give you a coupon so that the most you will pay is $10. It is very expensive but a little goes a long way and rash from bacteria clears up quickly.

I haven't read everything, but I just wanted to make sure that you KNOW its diaper rash and not a yeast infection. You may want to try some athletes foot stuff. Its happened to DD22m twice nowm that it clears right up with I use it.

Good luck!

We've gone through bad diaper rash a few times, to the point DS hiney was bleeding - I know Dr.'s often disagree, but for us it ALWAYS coincodes with teething. Anyway, Lotrimin was the trick to clear/heal it up, soak with Aveeno in the bathtub, and plain old Vaseline has been the best protectant we have found. We've tried them all, we like the Triple Paste, but Vaseline seems to do even better - plus it makes cleaning up a soiled diaper much easier - everything wipes right off the vaseline lubed hiney!! Plus, you can't beat the price!! :)

Is she better? What did he say?

(The Boudreaux's Butt Paste always worked for DS's really bad ones...but I used ALOT!)

When my son had diaper rash I would bathe him in Aveeno oatmeal bath and then lather him with Balmex. I don't know if Balmex is any better that Butt Paste, but I think it smells better. I agree with a previous poster that my son's would get worse when he was teething. Good luck!!

I didn't take her. She said "Mommy no doctor", so after reading many replies on here, we tried the Maalox and the Triple Paste today.
If it doesn't clear up by tomorrow afternoon, friday morning she is going in for sure. :scared:

Aquaphor & Maalox mixed together (if I recall correctly I heated the aquaphor to make it more liquidy first?) It was a miracle cream.
