I like the Franklin books to read aloud. They all have a nice little message in them that you can talk about to your kids. For instance, Franklin is Messy is a great one if your child doesn't take care of his/hers toys. They are written by Paulette Bourgeois in case you aren't familiar with them. The Robert Munsch books are funny and kids love them.
Don't be afraid to start reading chapter books aloud to the 8 year old. My DD loved the Little House books at that age. We also started the Harry Potter books then. My DD is nearly 12 now and I miss those times we read together! She is an avid reader now. I think she has read the Harry Potter books on her own at least three times each! We had to wait in line last summer at midnight for HP7!
Sorry to be so long winded but I am a Reading Recovery teacher and it is nice to see a post about someone who sees the value in books!!!!!!
Happy reading.,

Anything Dr. Suess, The Five Little Monkey's Books and for the 6-8 year olds Magic Tree House books and Junie B. Jones are great.

All of Kevin Henkes's books: Chrysanthemum, Wemberly Worried, Lily's Purple Plastic Purse, etc. They're FANTASTIC.

the Black Lagoon books (Teacher, busdriver, nurse, principal.....) DS loves these though they seem to be getting hard to find all the different ones locally.

berenstain bears (DS loves them and they teach a message)

Arthor (message teaching).

Adding to the already great list that is going:
DD5 recommends Cynthia Rylant easy chapter books: She especially like the Mr. Putter and Tabby and the Poppleton series. We also love The Fourteen Bears Summer and Winter (my favorite childhood book!)

DS9 has read all the Magic Tree House books. I have read a couple aloud to my 1st graders and they loved them. Don't know if your oldest is a boy or girl but these are great for both.

Also, FWIW, kuddos to you and everyone else for reading to your kids. Even after your kids become proficient readers, it is still such a special thing to read with them. DS9 and I are reading the Chronicles of Narnia toghether now even though he is quite capable of reading them on his own. The gift of a love of reading is such a great gift to give to kids. :lovestruc

my hands-down favorite is "Something Good" but we laught at "Alligator Baby" and "We share Everything" and many of his others as well.

We just started reading the "Captain Underpants" series to our kids. It's sooo silly, but they love it!

One of my favorites is The Lot at the ENd of the Block by Kevin Lewis.

It's a construction story with a great rhyme and rythym.

I don't think I've seen The Phantom Tollbooth mentioned yet. One of my favorites. I also loved all the "Shoes" books as a little girl...Dancing Shoes, Theater Shoes, etc...

I read Teddy Roosevelt and the treasure of Ursa Major with my 8 year old son and we really liked it. It's an adventure and mystery with the main characters are Teddy Roosevelt's children. It has interesting history in it as well. We are looking forward to the next in the series. Also my 5 year old enjoyed Down Girl & Sit. A funny story as told through the eyes of a dog. Lately Beverly Cleary's Ralph S. Mouse has been popular with my son. DD also likes No jumping on the bed! the Fancy Nancy series, & Pinkalicous is a cute one.
