We think of the DVC as pre-paying for vacations in better Disney accomodations. In my mind, there is no saving money or breaking even.
When you buy DVC you buy a set amount of points. We have 200. When you buy, you have a "use year" and ours is August....which means that every year in August, we are credited 200 DVC points. Then you can use those points to book rooms based on a
point chart. The points are based on room size (studio, one, two bedroom or grand villa) - the bigger the room, the more points it will cost you. Also the time of year affects the amount of points as does days of the week. You'll use alot more points to stay on a Friday or Saturday night than you will on a Sun - Thurs night. There are higher seasons (think Easter, summer, Xmas) and lower seasons when the points will be less too. Here is a link to a chart to give you more an idea:

Right now I think DVC new sales at SSR and/or AK are going for about $101 per point. We bought in for $86 per point. I wish we'd bought years ago when it was even less. So you do the math on what we spent. The cost does not end there. We also have to pay membership dues which run about $800 a year. Every year, and that is subject to increases if DVC sees fit.
So its not exactly cheap, but it is well worth it for some people - like us. But we're probably a little older than most of the posters on this board!
I should mention that points can be traded out with other timeshares, but we've not done this yet. On the DVC board, people say it is hard to do and that DVC should be purchased with Disney stays primarily in mind. I am no expert in that dept!
I hope that explains it a little bit to some who asked. I am not the best at explaining things!
