Hi all,

I'm Lecras's DH. We are coming over to Toronto for a couple of weeks from the 22nd of August, and i'm considering bringing my clubs with me to try out a course or two.

I'm an 18 handicap, sometimes play like an 8 handicap, sometimes like a 28 :rotfl:

If any of you are golfers, what courses would you recommend that are easy to get to from Downtown Toronto? The one that I really fancy trying is Glen Abbey. It's not exactly cheap, but it does sound like a great course.

Please let me know if you have any opinions about which courses would be worth playing.

I'm not a golfer, nor do I play one on TV, but if you want to just hit a bucket of balls while Lecras does something else, there's a driving range at Polson Pier, as well as a variety of other activities for the non-golfer. A lot of the activities are closed Mon-Tues, but everything's usually available the rest of the time.

Here's the website, in case you're interested. The GoKarts are a blast.

You'll need a car to get to Glen Abbey from downtown Toronto, as it is quite a bit west of the city though, if you can tolerate the inconvenience, you might be able to get away with a combination of GO train and taxi from the GO station. Angus Glen (which has recently hosted the Canadian Open) would also be a good choice but you would also need a car and GO train would probably not be a practical option given the schedules for Markham bound trains.

Royal Woodbine is a very good "shotmaker's" course -- narrow and lots of water -- that is a stone's throw from the airport. The only decent publicly accessible course within Toronto itself is Don Valley. It is a municipally run course but, from what I understand, a very good course and great value. It's actually on the subway line. Those are my suggestions if you don't want to stray too far from downtown.

There are a handful of private clubs in the city and, if you are a member of a club in the U.K., you may want to see if there are any reciprocal arrangements between your club and one of the Toronto clubs or whether the head professional at a local club has contacts with club professionals in Toronto.

However, if your spouse likes golf and if you are going to be here for a couple of weeks, you might want to consider renting a car and making the 2 hour drive north to Muskoka to spend a couple of days trying a couple of the new courses there. The courses are spectacular and have been carved out of the wilderness. The Rock, Deerhurst, Rocky Crest, Bigwin Island, Taboo are a few of the name ones up there. They probably all have websites that will show you what the course is like. Many of the resorts (e.g., Deerhurst, Delta hotels) have packages where you can play one course, stay the night and play another course the next day. For example, see attached link: http://www.muskokagolftrail.ca/golf.html. These course will be much more memorable and unique than what you find in these parts because of the geographical features of the Muskokas.

Thanks for the replies all, I'll have a look at the suggestions on the web and try and figure out where to go :)

MECH8T7, would it be too far to just get a taxi to Glen Abbey, Angus Glen or Lionhead from Downtown? It might be a pain carrying a set of clubs on a train?

Unfortunately DW doesn't play, so I'll have to stick to the Toronto area.

The club i'm a member of wouldn't have any agreements as it's not a 'Royal' club, which are usually the ones that do.

As far as shotmaking goes, left to right from a small fade to a huge slice is no problem, it's just right to left that eludes me at the moment hehe.

Thanks again for the help and advice.

I think Angus Glen is probably the closest and would probably be $35-45 each way by cab. Glen Abbey and Lionhead are further. Carrying your clubs on the subway or the train shouldn't be a problem unless you are going the same direction as the crowd during rush hour traffic...which you probably wouldn't because the rush is coming downtown in am and leaving downtown in pm. If you are only going to play a round or two, each of those three clubs would have very decent rental sets. So, my suggestions is to leave your sticks at home to save yourself the hassle and risk of damage in transport.

Good luck with your choice.
