There was an article in the Herald this morning about the upcoming increase to the price of milk in Nova Scotia: Milk Money

The article includes a table with milk prices across the country:

Are these prices accurate? I always thought we paid more than the folks in Ontario for milk. Do stores in Ontario often discount milk? I'm sure my SIL who moved BC to NB last summer told me she was paying much more for milk now than she had before the move.

I think, for example, the price given for Nova Scotia must be based on buying a 1L container. I buy by the 4L jug and I think the standard price is ~ $6.70/4L (or $1.67/L) although in our neighbourhood some of the stores price match Costco so we pay $5.19/4L ($1.30/L) This price matching has only been going on for the last year or so and is only in a small area of he city.

I can't believe milk is going up again in Nova Scotia. We just moved from HFX and it always bothered me that we paid so much more than everyone else. :confused3

In Ottawa, at Costco for 4 litres (3 bags 1%) is $3.89! And I think at the grocery store it is $4.29. :goodvibes

At Zehrs, a 4L Homogenized is $5.39.

Here in Alberta the cost of a 4L of 2% is about $3.89. A little cheaper at Costco, I think about $3.50? Wow... I can't believe that in NS it's a couple of bucks more!

I think those prices are a little off. I'm in SW Ontario and the grocery stores sell it for $4.59/4L, I buy it at Shoppers Drug Mart for $3.99/4L or $3.77 on sale.

I pay $3.99 for 4L but I buy Skim I think **** milk is a bit more.

Milk prices are definitely up and going up again in Western Canada.

I look after the milk at school and received a notice from our supplier saying the price had gone up in Jan. and will again Feb. 1st. It is anticipated that the changes will follow in B.C. on March 1st.

It has to do with a cost of production formula between farmers and the prov. milk boards. The cost of milk actually fluctuates throughout the year.

Holy cow!! (no pun intended) I pay $6.75 for 3 bags of .5%!

Thanks for the answers. I went to the website for the Canadian Dairy Information Centre and it looks like they did use the costs for a 1L container of milk. I think the comparing the costs of a 4L or a 2L container would have been more representative, but I don't think they wanted it to look like we were already paying a lot more for milk than most other places.

We Nova Scotians had better stock up before it goes up another 6 cents a litre next week....
