We use pre-paid calling cards from Sams Club. (They are through AT&T) We pay a little less than 3.5 cents per minute.

BJ's prepaid calling LD 2.9 cents a minute. Eliminated LD carrier, and have unlimited local, but may be changing to message rate service when I go back to work.:p

I've been employed by the local telephone company, in customer service, for the past 15 years. Have you called your local business office and asked them to review your telephone bill. Make sure what you have is truly what you need. My job is to sell products and services, but also to make sure my customer is making an informed decision regarding his/her telecommunication needs. Also, I've found, you do get what you pay for.

..StarPM you haven't mentioned how much your bill is (on avg) ... so I'm not sure what high is for you.. but have you looked into one of the fixed rate plans.. i think both mci and verizon have them. They include everything, local, caller id, call waiting, voicemail and all long distance you want in the US, are included.

We have the mci neighborhood plan, and our bill is constant every month. We have friends and family all over and can call them whenever for as long as we want. We also told all our friends, so those that don't have an unlimited plan can call us and we call them back so they don't have to pay. It is about $60 tho, but if we only had local it would be about $35 and then all the features, so it seems to work out.. esp with the long distance. We also got an international plan added on for $2 a month, when a friend was stationed in the UK- that saved us a bundle!

The other thing you might want to look into is giving up your land phone all together and getting cell phones that lets calls between phones by the same provider be free. I think AT&T does this - where calls between at&t cell phones are free, so calls between you and your husband would be free :)

Good luck!

What internet do you have? If you have Earthlink DSL or Cable right now you can sign up for free activation, first month, equipment, etc for this service called Unlimited Voice, it's only $29 a month for EVERYTHING, local, long distance, calling features and voice mail. $31 w/ the taxes. If you don't have Earthlink you can try Vonage.com, they offer the same plan, just have to pay the activation of $29.00 and $9.00 shipping, I think the 2nd month is free. But again only if you have some type of DSL or Cable.

We have SBC and our bill is $31.00 a month. We have an unlisted number and we pay extra for that. We use our cell phone for all of our long distance phone calls. We have a cable modem. I want to do away with the land line, but DH doesn't want too.
