we're staying in a cottage in Boyne Falls to save $$. Skiing is so expensive...but we've been talking about taking kids skiing for so long. We're saving money by driving to Michigan and not flying to colorado, renting at VRBO with a dog friendly place....

so far I've read that Betty's in Boyne Falls for breakfast and Red Mesa in Boyne City for dinner.

We're planning on eating some meals at home. Doing tubing and Avalanche Bay and a Sleigh Ride in afternoons. Lessons 2 mornings for kids....

any other tips or ideas or restaurants?

Thanks..

Trish

We just got back from Boyne over New Years. Everyplace was green but the mountain! LOL We didn't ski or tube. We usually go up there in the summer. There is ice skating, I think you can get skates for free. Also in Boyne CIty, they have a public park with a sledding hill and ice skating. Red Mesa Grill is our favorite restaurant there. It's in Boyne City...SO GOOD!!!! We went up to Petosky, and played mini golf at the Jungle. DH and my bro in law went to the casino there. There are coupons for the waterpark on their website. We are timeshare owners at the bluegreen place right next door, so we actually spent a lot of time in the condo. They do have activities, depending on when you go. When we were there they were doing free sleigh rides and smores. They had a movie night too. I dont think there was a charge for these. They have ziplines you can do that are open in the winter. Some of them require reservations, but there is a tandem line, or something like that, that you can just go to do. I'm thinking it was about $59.

If I remember right, there are a couple of free ski runs. We didn't do them because there wasn't enough snow on them. But I know DH found them on the hill map.

Saturdays during the month of January, the state of Michigan offers a program called "Ski Michigan." Google for the website, but with a coupon for around $30 for the day, you get ski rental (some resorts also have snowboarding for $40), a lesson and a lift ticket. You can't beat the price. If I remember correctly, the starting age needs to be 7 but it works for kids of all ages (adults too!)

I found the website:
http://www.goskimichigan.com/discover-michigan-skiing.html

It also has the link to the voucher you would need.

I hope this works for you, it is quite a deal!

I have family in Boyne City. Red Mesa is pretty good. If I remember correctly they have a happy hour menu that has some really good deals. We made a meal out of appetizers and taco's and it was incredibly resonable. There is a little cafe/deli next door that has wonderful sandwiches. BC pizza is also good too, not the best pizza I've ever had, but it is reasonably priced.

The grocery stores in Boyne are kinda overpriced, not terrible, but markedly more than I'm used to. Better deals can certainly be found at Wal-Mart in Petoskey.

Please be very careful when turning on to 131 coming in or out of Boyne Falls people drive like maniacs and there have been so many accidents.
