OT: Taking City Bus from Vancouver Airport?

I hope someone who lives in Vancouver can help with this.

My 21 year old DS is planning on visiting his friend who is on a work term out in Vancouver. He is looking at various ways to get from the airport to his friend's apartment on Alma Street (Jericho Beach area).

His friend doesn't have a car and will probably be at work when my DS arrives.

Is a city bus at all feasible in getting from the airport to this area? What would the fare be? He's a student and is trying to keep his costs down, if the bus isn't too difficult.

His friend said a cab is approx. $35, does that sound about right?

Yah that sounds about right for the cab. There is the airporter that runs from the airport to different locations downtown. http://www.yvrairporter.com/
Now, jericho is not really 'right downtown', and is more at the West End. If he took route one and got off at Granville & Broadway, he could grab a cab from that area and it would probably be a $10 cab ride. The shuttle is $13.
I think if he has the $35, I would just do that! It would be the easiest. For only $12 more it will be much more convienent. Just tell him to get a flat rate from the cabbie rather than going on the meter.

There is a main city bus stop at the airport. Take the bus to the Airport transfer station. Get on the 98 B Line that runs downtown. Get off at Granville and Broadway stop. Take the 99 B Line west down Broadway. There is a stop at Alma. Depending on how far away the place is there are several local busses that run either way down Alma and up 10th Avenue. Lollipop's Mom, I had discovered the airporter service but noted that it basically runs just to downtown. I will tell him to ask for a flat rate if he decides on the cab, that's a good tip, thanks!

bbangel, thanks for the information for the bus route! My son will have to find out exactly where on Alma his friend lives. Would you know whether he asks for a transfer for each bus or if he has to pay separately?

LOL ...... Julie your DS won't have any problems with taking the bus as his Mother is an all around expert at using the bus services and you've probably passed this on in your genes!

You pay one fare - it will vary depending on when he arrives - and a transfer is given. Then he has 90 minutes to get where he is going. It should only take about 45 minutes. It is super easy. The Airporter does stop at Granville and Broadway but isn't worth the extra money! For fares and schedules check out www.translink.bc.ca - you can do a trip plan there as well.

LOL Cindy, I don't think I'm ever going to live down my infamous "WDW or Bus(t)!" trip to Orlando! And yes, I'm pretty good with the Lynx bus too!

I agree, bbangel, I loved it out there, my sister lives out in Nanoose Bay (Vancouver and Campbell River before that) and I've visited BC several times. I think I'm due for a visit!

We booked my son's trip this afternoon and he's very excited to be going. This is his first trip on his own, which makes it doubly exciting and last time he saw Vancouver through a child's eyes, so I'm sure he'll get a different perspective this time.
