The manager said that the employee has done this QUITE a few times. She's not a "people person" and probably should be moved to a stock-type position, not one on the floor.
I do NOT feel guilty about this at all. If someone's going to tell me what I do or do not NEED to do for MY child, I'm going to get a manager involved. Nobody can tell me what my baby can or can't have.
No, the employee did not sound like she was trying to be helpful. She was snippy when she said what she did.
I did tell her "Thank you for your advice", she gave me a "whatever" hand wave and disappeared behind a door.

Why are you so defensive? It's not like she saw you bottle feeding and told you how horrible that was and that breast feeding was better. It's not like she saw you changing a disposable diaper and told you how you were destroying the environment. The advise to not spend a ton of money on a first birthday would probably be advise any mother with several children would offer because they remember how their kids played with the boxes instead of the toys. We are still going to spend what we are going to spend I always spend way too much on my kids 1st birthdays and I'm on my 4th one coming up this month no unsolicited advise is going to change that. It just doesn't make sense to go through so much effort to report this woman.![]()

Yes, she should have just advised you on some toy choices but she didn't prevent you from doing whatever you wanted to do. Heck, my own mom and grandma both said the bit about us not buying for a 1st birthday (they went all out, mind you!

I totally agree with the OP. If I am shopping and someone asks me if they can help me, I expect them to actually HELP ME!
For a 1 yo, I would expect a salesperson to point me in the right direction, ask me if there was anything special I was looking for (toys, video, etc) and point out some that are considered excellant for that age group.
I would noy expect a person offering to help me to poo poo me and say that my child won't remember a gift so don't bother. Very very bad customer service anyway you slice it!
The manager should absolutely use this as a coaching opportunity to help the salesperson better utilize these scenarios and actually HELP the customer find an item they are there to get.![]()

No. She asked a "Did I do the right thing" question. That is a different question and it seemed to be a question in her own head when she asked. We answered.
I personally try to make my posts more observation and opinion rather than an attack, but I do agree there were a few responses I found to be a little too harsh. Simply the fact that she asked the question indicates to me that she is not a bad, petty person. But I still think she made a wrong choice in this case and I don't intend to say otherwise just to make her feel better.
I'm not trying to make her feel bad. Just holding her responsible for her words, as all adults should be.
your right, she asked and most people agree she should not have reported her. I, too, would have just let it roll off my back, but like you said, and I agree, it got a bit harsh and I hate seeing people attacked here.

Just my thoughts.I have to disagree, too. The OP questioned her decision. She asked if she did the right thing. She asked for opinions and she received them. Obviously she had doubts about her actions. Then, many posts later, after the majority of people disagreed with her, the employee was suddenly rude and snippy, when that was never mentioned in the original post.![]()
I think that everyone should spend a little bit of time working either in retail or as a restaurant server...less silly things like this would happen.
