I was thinking about getting DS (turning 6 end of OCT) the death star lego set for Christmas. He would flip !! But, $400 plus shipping is alot, so wanted to know if it is worth it...is it easy to get characters in and out of? is it stable? do you set it up on a lego base? could he play with it for years? any input greatly appreciated !!

Hi there! i have no real input on the kit. However -- I wanted to let you know that it is actually on clearance at the Lego Store at my mall ($199.99, I believe!!) so if you want to save some $$ you could maybe try calling them directly and seeing if you can have it shipped from the store. I have no idea whether they will do it or not, but I think its worth a try to save a couple hundred!!

Here's the store info:

Potomac Mills Mall Lego Store: (703) 490-1335 (This is in Woodbridge, VA)

Let me know how it turns out for you!! :)

I would certainly try to find it on sale where possible because it is alot of money. If you have the money, go for it, it has lots of minifigs with it. But for me, $400 is just way to expensive for my 6yo.

Just a thought.... my son who turned 6 in aug is a huge lego and Star Wars fan. What he loves the most is the StarWars lego people. If I had $400 to spend on Lego stuff, I would go to EBay and buy a bunch of Lego Star Wars minifigures (Anakin, ObiWan, DarthMaul, Luke, etc...). You can buy them in lots. I'd get a few starships and he'd be thrilled.

I end up putting together the lego sets and superglue them so they don't fall apart. I can't imagine putting together the DeathStar one, it's huge!!

The kit actually might be too advanced for a 6 year old to put together. My 12 year old wants one and I was studying it at the Lego Store.

I agree that 400.00 is just too much for a lego kit too.

I think the set looks amazing, but I saw it in person at our local Lego store and it is very small.

My ds just turned 7 and we have gotten him several of the ships and smaller sets. As careful as he is with them they are now all in pieces again and he builds his own ships with the pieces.

So as cool as the death star is, I'm afraid it might end up in pieces are as part of his own imagination. Not that it's a bad thing, just a lot of money to spend on legos.

I'm sure my ds would flip over the death star too, but that's just too much money for a 6 or 7 year old.

If you're talking about the new Death Star "battle inside" set, it's very cool looking. We saw it at the DTD Lego store last month and my son was in love. He won't be getting it.

$400 price tag aside, it's just way too many pieces (read lots of small pieces) for him at 8. It's labled for 12+ and I find that the skill level they put on their kits is fairly accurate. If it says 12 they mean for older kids or adults to build. My son started building lego kits about 5years old and really only likes the SW kits. By age 6 he could do the kits labled 8+. We have most of the smaller ones, but even slightly bigger ones like the x-wings I had to put a lot of it together for him (read take it apart and fix his mistakes that threw the whole thing off). His largest one is the smaller full Star Destroyer and we still haven't finnished that one yet because there is no room for it right now.

No Lego set we have is without it's problems to fall apart if played with. They are not action figures. If you don't plan to glue it, plan to fix it a lot. I also agree with a PP that my son really likes the minifigs better than the rest of the set itself. We have lots of ships without pilots. :lmao:

OTOH if you can afford it, buy it, but either put it away for a few years until he is older....or plan to sit with him for many hours to put it together. Just the thought of seperating the pieces for this one gives me a headache. ;)

My DS7 wants this also, but WAY too many pieces (3417!) and it says ages 16+. My MIL would have bought it for him but I told her no. Yes I'm a mean mom.

I don't expect him to construct it. He does help with the smaller ones, like 200 pieces or so, and does quite well. My thought was to get it early enough that DH and I could have it put together for Christmas and he would find it under the tree...ready to play !! I know the minifigs are the most fun for younger kids, but I so think he would love reenacting all the death star scenes. Not sure yet, have a few weeks to decide and hopefully it will go on sale. Thanks for the input !!

I find the lego sets are difficult to play with, unless the joy is from building it. Unless you glue them together, the sets fall apart very easily when reinacting scenes. The little figures are wonderful, but the bigger the set, the more things that fall off. We buy a lot of Star Wars and Indiana Jones sets and they are always in pieces when my kids play with them. Some of the ships we've built are really for display only, because the engines and wings tend to fall off when they pretend to fly them around. If you don't mind gluing the pieces together I'd say that would make it more fun for your DS.

My ds8 loves Star Wars and he loves his Lego Star Wars when they are first put together. Once one of the ships comes apart, they stay that way. He uses the pieces to make other things, but rarely does the set get re-built.
I wouldn't spend $400 on that unless my ds was much older and used it as more of a collectible than a toy.

Yes, it's cool. But he won't be able to build it because it's too hard. So, you're basically willing to spend $400 for your son to have the figures and a "cool" toy under the tree.

Personally, I would take $40 or $50 and spend it on a couple of the different Star Wars Lego sets that are age-appropriate. He'd still get several of the figures, he'd be able to build it himself (or with only a little help), and you'd be out a heck of a lot less money. Heck, even for $100 you could have a lot of other Lego sets under the tree!

The starwars sets are notoriously difficult to put together, the x-wing had my DH cursing something rotten trying to put it together for DS, they are more display pieces IMO the starwars ones as they come apart v.easy if played with like a 6,7,8 year old boy would play star wars.

If you are going to buy it and want him to be able to play with it buy it a few days or even weeks early allowing time to assemble it because believe me it'll take a fair few hours!

I have it preordered it from Lego my son has thousands of Legos he is very good at building. The set is in a big box i paid full price but we love Lego he builds them easily id love another wonder if the Mall will ship it its a great collectible item.:cool1: :cool1:

We have a bunch of Star Wars lego sets and you can't really "play" with any of them. Maybe if you glued the pieces together you could.

Just an FYI for those that are suggesting to try glue if they want it to stay together. We tried that on a couple of different ships, even used model glue and they are still in pieces. They just don't stay together.
