OT - Should I take my kids to see Star Trek?

I just read a review that said it would probably be fine for young teens, but it does have a fair bit of hand-to-hand violence and bloodied combatants. (Not so diff. from the shows I guess.) Not particularly sexual or profane. Personally I'm hoping to get a sitter! :goodvibes Mommy's movie. Mommy's. Go to bed.

I would like to know too. Mine are 6 and 9. It looked good. I'm always happy to go to a movie that we all can enjoy!

My kids are 5 and 9.

The new Star Trek movie is PG-13. Personally, I would not bring a 6 year old to a movie like that. Not even a ten year old. Seriously, I think the movies are simply becoming more and more intense and much more violent for each age group. Cool for adults who love action and can process that but not for little kids. Yes even Star Trek. Check out the trailer that looks super cool but not for a little kid. No way.

I remember going to Transformers and in the theater it was super intense. I loved it. However, I remember seeing this little boy about say 4-5 walking with his Dad coming into the theatre and sitting down. I can't imagine the nightmares that kid had that night. :sad2:

I saw it lastnight; and I can't speak for others as every parent is different... there are some fights etc which may be a bit much for a younger person but there's nothing horrifically graphic

Just return from Star Trek with DD 10 and she really enjoyed it.
Some kids can handle it some can't. No more intense than Transformers or Lord of The Rings.

Great film.

We went last night and thought that it would be OK. Only one truly violent scene that I can recollect.

My 9 year old DS is the only other member of the family who wants to see it!!!

I'm glad to read this.... because my DD9 really wants to see this and so do I:goodvibes

I always look at the rating's and some of them don't make sense to me. Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull was rated PG-13 in the states and that one got me. Only one scene was iffy but my kids know that there is movie magic (we've been to Universal 2 times so they know it's only pretend). We took our boys 6 and 8 to see the new Wolverine movie last weekend. They loved it (me I thought it was okay but you got to see Hugh Jackmans butt :woohoo:). We are planning on taking our boys to see the new Star Trek movie along with the new Transformers when it comes out.

Just so you are aware, the new Transformers movie series is PG-13 and is quite violent/intense for a little 6 year old.

Looks like I'm in the minority here but I'm of the opinion that my kids don't need to see all that at such an early age. Personally I'm sick of the media desensitizing our kids to violence in TV commercials, cartoons and also movies. This is why I love Disney so much. We can trust and actually watch a family movie that is a great movie without a ton of unnecessary violence.

Sorry gang but it's just my opinion and absolutely no flames intended. I think we could use a lot less violence and intensity in the world. Letting our kids see this stuff at such an early age is just adding fuel to the fire. It saddens me that I'm in the minority. :sad2:

AndyMcV I understand that everyone has their own ideas as to what is appropriate for their own children. I usually screen movies first and do tons of research before I take them to movies that are iffy. They also know that it is pretend and just a movie. I himmed and haaad over the Wolvrine movie and thought okay we could always leave if it is too much. My youngest thought the Spiderwick Cronicles was scary but loves the action movies. My 6 year old isn't the typical 6 year old. He doesn't like the fluff movies....if it isn't a cartoon he doesn't like it unless it is action....now would I take them to see a Jason Statham movie or something like that with swearing and nudity no. But they want to see certain movies. And I will be watching the trailers for Transformers and doing research because maybe it will be a rental who knows until I can find out more about it and I have watched it first. Sorry if this is disjointed I suck at writing I am better at talking and explaining things than writing.

I agree in that all kids are not created equally. I'm also glad that you're a parent that actually does some research into what they're kids are watching. Still I'd be carefull of showing this stuff off to them (and again only my opinion here), a child's mind can no where near process violence and intensity the same way an adult mind can.

I still cannot get that picture out of my head of that little 4- 5 year old walking into the theatre with his Dad watching Transformers. That would have seriously scared the crap out of my little kid.

My 8 yo still gets this wistful look on his face when the first Transformers movie comes up..."maybe when I'm 10." Still haven't seen it, besides the violence the reviews mentioned sexual content--what were they thinking?? :sad2: Poor kid. Doomed to watch PBS kids til he gets his own apartment. :lmao:
