OT Scarey inccident with the bus today

Wow, some of the folks are awfully quick to find blame with the driver.

So, who in the heck would you blame? A 6 year old child????? Geez. That driver has attention issues, is on something, or both.

OP: I am so glad your daughter was not injured. What a terrible thing to go through, let alone witness!

I'm a school bus driver and I agree completely that the driver was 100% at fault. We have to go through alot of training hours before we get our license and then every 4 years we have to be recertified as well as the monthly safety meetings we go to. One thing that is strsesed is the 10 foot safety zone of the bus and making sure it is clear before you close your doors. I always count my kids as they get off and watch to see where everyone goes. I am super paranoid and check my mirrors at least two or three times before pulling away.

Another poster mentioned how could the driver not hear the yelling out the window. I am not defending the driver in any way but it sometimes can be difficult. The noise from the engine and bus is loud and you have 30 conversations going on at the same time but that is no excuse for what happened.

I'm glad your dd is ok and hope that you continue to follow up on the driver. He should definately be punished for his lack of attention.

WOW!! your daughter is lucky to have reacted very reacted very quickly! I am glad she is ok!

I have a similar problem with DS's bus driver. I have actually called the school and bus company to complain about this but for some reason it keeps happening.
Anyway, DS's bus driver will start driving away when the kids are still standing up!:scared1: I am scared that my kid or someone else's kid will get hurt. This is the same lady who has a lead foot when driving, BTW. Several times she has had to slam on the brakes at our bus stop! Our road is 25 MPH.
I know other parents at the stop have talked to her but their words must have fallen on deaf ears.
What happened to BUS SAFETY? They stress it with the kids but what about the drivers? Not only that but, in R.I. they have bus monitors. Here in Ct they do not!

I would highly recommend video taping it if you have a video camera and turning it over to the media. Or even just contact the media and have them come out. Bus drivers like that need to go. My daughters had one bus driver that would blow a whistle on the bus very loudly. My daughter has ear problems so it would be causing her severe pain. We ended up losing that bus driver very quickly and got a new wonderful one that we have had for a year now.

i am a bus driver and that driver was not doing their job you are told(and by law)to check your mirrors all the time (every 5-7 secs.) i do not know how it could of happened if they were doing their job correctly and to think she went all that way down the road the driver was not checking the mirrors. please call and say something to the company.

Thank God your daughter is O.K. And what a smart little cookie you have there!

As far as the driver goes, he should never, ever be allowed to drive bus again. He was already trained, but he chose to completely disregard his training. Useless, worthless, no excuse...well, I can't use that word here.

Op here, I have talked again with my daughter & my husband to make sure I understood what had happened clearly. The bus driver told my husband the kids told him no one was getting off at the stop & that he didn't even realize a child had gotten off the bus, therefore the only person to blame is the driver.

Wait I am confused...Maybe buses are different now (my kids aren't school aged) but doesn't the child need to go PAST the bus driver. Like isn't the door right next to him? Doesn't he have to like open the door? I am confused on that one.

So the driver was looking to the children to tell him what was going on? I'm also very glad that your daughter is ok.

I agree w/ this poster too. Driver shouldn't be looking to kids for an answer. And I am glad you baby girl is ok!

I am glad your child is okay!
I have been debating calling our bus company for a while now because the kids are always standing up when the bus is moving. I drive my DD to school any chance I get (2-3 times a week) just so she doesn't have to take the bus. If I am driving behind one and the kids in the last seat are standing up and catch my eye, I motion for them to SIT DOWN!
It is all the buses from our district not just one bus!

B/c this happened to your DD, I think I will call. I could easily see something like this happening here.

I am so glad they are taking this serious and if you find out he is driving a bus again I would immediately contact the media so they can warn all others in the viewing area. I am glad your dd is handling it all well and appears to have no pain as well. The driver should always be watching the kids when he stops the bus and opens the doors.

I would also contact the DMV in your area and report this incident. They are the ones that give out these licenses and they will send an investigator out and if there are any violatations they will hand out tickets. I am a bus driver and during our training we are trained to look in all our mirrors and continue to do this as we are SLOWLY pulling away, so if he did what he should have been trained to do this would have NEVER happened, I would totally freak out if this happened to my DD.

Do we live in the same town?? I also live in CT and the drivers in this town totally drive crazy, and absolutely nothing done, I have contacted DMV several times, I followed this one bus filled with elementary kids going 40 -45 in a 25 around sharp corners and I called the Supers office and all I got was a song and dance and I basically told them if it happens again I will contact DMV and that driver was transfered to a different town, but she still drives  what town do you live in??

This needs to be reported to the bus company. It rates way up there with the cases (some recent ones in the Boston area) where the driver parked the bus at the end of the run and a kid was still inside and the outside temperature was 90 degrees or zero degrees. Or it fits the definition of a pedestrian-vehicle collision.

This is shocking. I remember seeing our driver walk up and down after we were dropped off making sure no one was left behind. And this was AGES ago. what's happening?!

I'd be furious at about the backpack incident, NO excuse for that. Cripes, what if she slipped backward? She wouldn't be far enough away and the wheels would be rolling he's in such a bleepin' hurry. Sorry, that makes me angry.

How scary. You DD reacted smart, good for her. I would call and be sure to report this. Lucky nothing happened. Next time might be a different story though.
