Going to take a couple of days to drive to Savannah. Does anyone know if it is better to stay in city or outskirts. Would like to do soe shopping and site seeing. Any hotel suggestions?

Stay in the historic district. I would not book anywhere else. We have been down to the Savannah area many times and will not make the mistake of booking outside of the historic area again.

The Marriotts are very nice and close. I believe there is a Courtyard and a Fairfield and possibly a springhill. We stayed at the Courtyard and it was very convienent.

We have also stayed at a few of the bed and breakfasts.

The Eliza Thompson house is very nice. http://www.elizathompsonhouse.com

Also the Mansion on Forsyth Park is nice and I believe it is run my Marriott.

The Bed and breakfasts are the way to go if you can afford it. They are simply wonderful!

Also, I perfer this Trolley Service over them all. http://www.trolleytours.com/Savannah/

Don't forget about the Ghost tours.

I hope this helps you. Make sure you visit Tybee island on your trip. It is about 20 mins away. The lighthouse is beautiful.

Can you tell Savannah is my second favorite place next to Disneyworld?

I agree - the historic district is the way to go. There are many hotels there - the chains and B&Bs. Fantastic food (Mrs Wilkes, Lady and Sons (Paula Deen) and Pirate House are the famous buffets but there are lots of places to try), River Street, the trolley tours... as mentioned - try a ghost tour! (we did the one where you ride in a hearse). Lots to do, and it is just a beautiful place to walk around.

Definitely stay in the historic district. I attended a conference in Savannah in March and took a few extra days to site-see. Loved the city. I stayed at the Avia which overlooks the new Ellis Square and is across the street from Paula Dean's restaurant. The hotel is a medium size hotel but one of the most beautiful and friendly places I've ever stayed. I'd give it 5 stars and would go back there any time. It is also close to the river walk. I felt comfortable walking around by myself into the evening. You can walk though the entire historic district or take a tour. I did both.

Thanks for the wonderful ideas, Orlando has alwyas been my first choice, but this will be a nice change, as long as I can still go to Disney in the spring. We are flying in and out of Orlando, so I will get a bit of the Disney.

We stayed at the Hampton Inn in the historic district. Free breakfast-lots to choose from. Directly across from the waterfront. Really cool shops! Be sure to go to the candy store along the waterfront (can't think of the name!) but they have free samples of their warm pecan candy- YUM!!!
Also, take a ghost tour and go out to Tybee Island.
It's a lot fo fun to just wander through the streets. If you have a girl scout with you, be sure to go to the Juliet Lowe house- also haunted!
Have a great time!
