You guys are great and I'm hoping you can answer this question. In preparing to do my taxes I noticed in TaxAct one of the questions being about my dependents "Was this child legally blind or total disabled during the year". My ds8 does receive SSDI and I would consider him disabled (mood disorder, mild retardation). I have never received a 1099 or any form from Social Security. Do I need to, or will it benefit me, to claim his SSDI on my taxes?

SSDI is NOT taxable income. Do not include anything about it on your tax return.

You mean SSI not SSDI. To get SSDI you have to have worked at least 40 quarters. SSI is what disabled kids get. And no SSI is not taxable.

I'm not sure what the rules are for claiming "totally disabled" on the tax forms. But I do remember checking into it once and I don't qualify as a wheelchair user who can't feel or move anything from the waist down. When they say totally disabled they really mean totally.

SSDI is taxable, they withold taxes from my money every month and I do claim it as income.I did work 35 years before becoming disabled. The income I get is based on what I earned and paid into SS.
