OT question about sippy cups

We use the straw sippy cups. Much better for the teeth vs a sippy cup. I dont remember when DS switched (it was much later than DD), but DD made the switch several months ago maybe around 14 mos?? (shes now ~20 mos). DS can drink from a regular cup (hes now 5) but he has to stay in the kitchen with it. I still give him a sippy type cup to prevent spills around the house, in the car, shopping, etc. DD seems to pick up things much earlier than DS did-whether thats because shes a girl or because she wants to be like big brother???

Just to update, we tried some of the sippy cups that have built-in straws over the weekend. Part of what prompted this was that he regularly would say his drink was "icky" out of his regular sippy cup, so I'm not sure if they got old and "icky" or what, but I thought maybe it was a good time to try to get him to drink out of a real cup or start making more progress.

He did well with the straw type cups--he doesn't seem to drink as much, but he did okay. I am a little concerned with the speech/sucking issue. DS sucks his thumb ALOT so the less sucking, the better. Do you think the straw sippies are easier on kids as far as that issue goes?

Thanks again for all your responses! I know DS is really good as some things as a PP has mentioned, and slow at others, and this is just one of those that we will keep working on...

I think I'm late to my post. but all my kids drink from a cup. To teach them is time consuming but you don't have to worry about spills after that. Give them a cup their size and just put a splash of drink in it. Let them drink it. Even if they throw their heads back like they do, none of it will spill. Sit there and continue to just pour a splash in every time until their done with their meal. They'll get the hang of it and ask for more each time. Plus, don't get angry when they do spill. Lots of parents lose their temper and then the kid doesn't want to risk getting in trouble and will want a sippy cup or a straw. Good luck!

My kids drink a lot more with a straw cup vs sippy cup. They dont have to suck as hard. Also makes life a lot easier when you go out to eat and dont have their cups. They know how to use a straw! The only downside to the straws was that my son would chew them up all the time. Most stores dont sell replacement straws so I had to order them online. Thankfully dd doesnt do that.

My dd is on long term antibiotics and has to drink lots of fluids. With the straw cups, she goes through a lot of fluids now.

We used straw cups after sippy cups if we were in the car or on vacation (hotel room) and I found it worked very well. I was so against sippy cups because I tried to suck out of one and it was so hard for ME to get liquid! Anyways, what I was getting at is we had the straw cups that disney world sells (disney store used to) that had a rubber top straw so it didn't matter if he chewed on them or not. They are quite pricey now though, I think $11 a cup! After I while I went to the take and toss with straws.

Another fan of the "Straw Cup" here!! My step son used the "no spill" sippy cups with the valve thingies for a very little while but my husband did NOT like it. He is an occupational therapist...works with speech therapists every day and knew all the info on the oral issues that can occur.

My step son learned to drink from a regular cup about 2-ish...but the child is so easily distracted it just ended up in his lap, on me, on the floor...so we switched to the Playtex straw cups...the ones that have the straw covers to close them over. We love them and he stopped spilling constantly...even now at 4 he can drink perfectly well from a cup, but he spills b/c he doesn't pay attention. To avoid several clothing changes in the mornings I usually just give him a straw cup. It's easier for everyone. We work with what we got!:thumbsup2
