OT: Potty Chair Help

Ok, we are ready to take the plunge into introducing potty training

Trying to decide whether to get an actual 'potty chair' or just the seat cover that goes over the big toilet seat.

We have a long narrow bathroom, so there is not really an 'out of the way' place for the potty chair, but it could sit in the way for awhile!

I know many of the potty chairs have removable lid things that will fit on a big toilet, which is good. I am just grossed out by cleaning the little bucket that everything goes into, especially being preggo. But I know he would be able to get onto the little potty easier, however he cannot take his clothes off by himself yet so that is really not an issue, as I will always be there.

My mom is concerned that a small seat on the big potty would be scary for him?

Well, I think the smaller potty would work well. We bought 2 for DD....one was the babybjorn one....it doesnt fit onto the other potty chair, but it worked well for getting her to sit down on it and actually use it. The other we bought was the one that fit on the bigger potty and the other part turned into a step stool. She seemed to use that one well, but not as part of the bigger potty. I would start small, then move up to the big potty. Good luck.

We had little potty for our DD and it seemed easier for starting out. Our bathroom is also narrow, so we kept the potty in her bedroom with towels under it so that she could use it anytime she wanted. Yes, it is kind of gross cleaning out the bucket, but once they are using it, it's hard to complain. The little potty came with the seat that could be used on the big potty, but it was a pain transferring it back and forth, so we bought a separate seat that stays in the bathroom at all times. It's good to have a seat for the big potty cause they relax without fear of falling in.

DD (2) is starting to use the potty !!! YEAH!!! I thought she would like the big girl seat that fits on the toilet. BUT she wants HER potty!!! She can have whatever she wants, if she will potty!! She is VERY headstrong so we have been at our wits end!! (she wants to go see Mickey and Stitch and after frankly telling her that if I didn't have to buy diapers we would go. . . she thinks she can try it!!!) SHHHHH do not tell her that the Christmas trip is ALREADY paid for!!

DH was totally against the potty chair idea for our DS (then 2). It just grossed him out at the thought of having to clean the poop out of the little pot. So we started with the kind that just set in on top of the big toilet and used a small stool for DS to climb up. That was kind of hit or miss to start. DS was a little lazy about wanting to climb up on the stool to get to the potty. So DH gave in, and I splurged on one of those little potty chairs that look like a big toilet. DS loved the idea of having a potty that was his size but still looked like mommy and daddy's. Plus it made flushing sounds when you pushed on the handle When he spent the night at grandma's he was ok with using the kind that sets on the big toilet, so that worked out great!

In June we had a big family party to say good-bye to his toilet because he now fine with the bigger one with the insert. He also got to throw away all the rest of his pull-ups, as he was now a "big boy!" And there has been no turning back. Especially since his very first stand up peeing experience was at the bathroom in the check-in building at Ft. Wilderness in August. He's been standing ever sine!

But, as the mother of a DS, might I suggest that which ever way you decide to go, PLEASE make sure there is a reliable guard on the front of the seat...and that it is attached securely prior to every sit! No matter how hard we tried to teach DS to tuck in, he only managed to get it right about half the time. The only real accidents we had were because he "peed out" (his words, not our). Poor guy was heart broken that first time he peed on Bob The Builder because he wasn't tucked all the way, and the little guard had fallen off the chair

Only my first child used a special little potty chair--that is, until he "caught himself" on the pee-pee guard in the front~ow! Then he would have nothing to do with it. So we taught him to go standing up. I kept a thick dictionary in the bathroom for him to stand on and he was pretty independent. For #2 he liked to sit on the toilet backwards so he could see it come out( I know, TMI)

My daughter was much less easy-going about it. She just flat-out refused to go anywhere. She finally did potty train, but only with the small seat insert. I kept the dictionary in there for her to stand on and she did fine.

I'm with you about cleaning the little pot out. Cleaning the small insert was a piece of cake!

We're in the midst of potty training. We bought DD two potties ––*one for the upstairs bathroom and one for the powder room downstairs. She'll go in both, but prefers the one downstairs, which has a bigger "hole" and a soft seat. We bought it at Babies R Us. My mom bought her the royal Fisher-Price musical one that makes a royal sound when she potties –– except she learned first time on it that if she sticks her hand down there and triggers the sensors, she can be a "potty princess" without even trying!

DD used a potty chair. DS absolutely refused to sit down on ANY potty, toilet seat, etc. He was completely daytime pee trained (standing up into toilet) at 22 months BUT he absolutely refused to poop on the toilet/potty until the day he turned 3. He would wait for his bedtime diaper and poop it every night. One day (happened to be 3rd b-day) he just finally decided to poop on the toilet. Good luck and don't give up!!!
