We go to WDW in a month. I am posting here because the DIS community is one of the biggest on the net. Son is hoping for a solution to his problem after we get home.

DS 17 has had bad warts on hand and they are getting worse. Doctor has tried freezing them and gave up, passing us on to dermatologist. (in 2 weeks big wait of 6 months).
Also he had surgery 2 yrs ago on plantars warts (huge) on one foot but they came back worse. Noone else in family has this viral problem! He covers hands with about 6 bandaids.
We have tried doctor's freezing, surgery, sulphur powder and soap and duct tape treatment, home freezing kits, 27% solution etc. I think we are at about $400 in purchases at least we have a medical system in Canada!

So what can we expect from dermo?

There is an over the counter treatment called Wart Stick here in the U.S. It is 40% salicylic acid instead of the low doses in common OTC treatments. It actually looks like a lip balm. My oldest has had one pesky wart on a toe for a while (not a plantars however) and it has done wonders in a very short time. The Derm also recommended some prescription drug to be used off label, but I wanted to try out the wart stick first before we went to extremes. That might be something you could try in the meantime until you get in to see the dermatologist. Good luck.

I've had both planter warts and hand warts treated by a dermatologist. With the hand warts, the dermatologist burned them off (burning flesh smells a little like hot dogs, did you know that? ). One of them came back smaller, he burned it off again, and they've never come back -more than 14 years later.

The planter warts were terrible. I had over 20 on my left foot, many in a cluster known as a "mosaic" pattern. The dermatologist trimmed the three largest in three areas of my foot, and applied a solution to those three. This solution caused those planter warts to blister (it was painful for a few days) and they either fell off or disappeared. True to his word, this solution he applied to my foot also stimulated my body to fight the virus causing the warts and the rest literally got smaller and smaller and vanished over a period of about 6 weeks. It's been months, and they've never come back. He did tell me mine were so bad, that if it didn't work, he would have to do outpatient surgery and cut them out of my foot.

HTH!!

Here's the method my whole extended family uses and it always works.

Take a pin (the kind you sew with) and push it into the middle of the wart just until you start to feel it. Then take a lighter and hold the flame on the other end of the pin until you feel the burn in the wart just for a sec. That's it. The wart should turn black and disappear in a few days. Sometimes stubborn warts need to be done twice. This method has always worked. In fact, my DH gets excited when he gets a wart because he loves to do this method just to watch it disappear. Yeah, I know, he's weird!!!:)

Wow, never heard that!

We had some STUBBORN "flat warts" on my DS's hands. Pediatrician suggested waiting. When DS started being emotionally bothered by them at age 7 (a year or two of having several very small warts), we went to dermatologist who first suggested retinA creams & Salicyclic acid creams with no luck.

We ultimately had them "frozen" about 20 times (every two weeks) and somtimes scraped with blade and finally they're gone (with some mild scar tissue I'm hoping will fade with time). I'm not sure if it really was the freezing that did it. I know with most warts--they will EVENTUALLY go away. Fortunately, I have what most consider good health insurance and paid little out of pocket. I'm so thankful to have insurance...

Now that DD has a few small flat warts on hand (she developed them before DS's went away) I'm going to give it time for her body to fight them off naturally. The freezing is somewhat painful. DS would blister up at the site and have some pain for an hour or two after. DD is way too sensitive to put her through that for cosmetic reasons at this point. It's been many months now and they are not getting bigger--and may even be getting smaller??

My son had warts (picked them up at gymnastics) and passed them on to everyone in the family. The topical stuff worked for the rest of us, but not for him. He wouldn't try freezing.

My pediatrician gave us an unusual alternative: Tagamet and duct tape. She said there are studies that show the two somehow stop the warts.

Like you, we had a Disney trip coming up. He couldn't manage to keep the duct tape on (sweaty feet?) so I did Tagamet and the over the counter wart treatment...the type where you get a sticky dot of medicine and a little round bandaid to cover it. Amazingly, after almost a year of treatment, the warts were gone!

I have no idea how Tagamet helps, but it worked for him. It was a relief for all of us!

There's a new treatment called bleomycin that the dermatologist injected into a plantar wart on my foot. Didn't hurt much, maybe a pinch? The wart turned black and fell off about a month later. As long as you're not freaked out by needles, it seems to be effective and much less painful than lasers or freezing. :thumbsup2

I saw on TV that putting old nail polish on it will work.

The mother said get the thickest old nail polish and put it over the wart. Let it dry. It stops it from getting air and then it comes off with the nail polish.

I haven't been able to try this so i'm not sure if it works.

They tried this on my DS's and it didn't work. His Dr. said it doesn't work on all warts and there are those that need more than one shot. Something to keep in mind with this treatment.

We tried over the counter, freezing and smothering with duct tape all in combination. No luck. So we went to a podiatrist and he prescribed carac cream. It is supposed to be used as a chemo cream for skin cancers I believe but it really worked. Hers was so deep they said if it didn't work they would have to cut it out. We treated at home and it was gone in 3 weeks.

I had several periungal warts on my hands. These are the type that are around nails. They were very painful and had almost ruined a couple of my nails.

I had candida (yeast) antigent injected to them back in June. It took a few injections (one to see if my body responded to the yeast and one in each wart on my hands) and the warts were gone completely inside of three weeks. Now that the nails have grown back out, there is no trace of them having ever been there. This is one of the treatments that stimulates your immune system to fight the virus.

Freezing, acid, etc. did not work. The candida therapy was painful (my fingers felt like bees had stung them), but the sites only hurt for a day or two. As a nice side affect, a couple of tiny flat warts that were not treated also disappeared.

Yes, my son has those on 3 fingers as well as huge and little hand warts and plantars warts!
I will ask the specialist. I wonder how and why this works?
I found the research and a list of doctors who provide it. We are in Canada and noone is listed so it must not have passed Health Canada's rules (FDA in American terms).

Thanks for all the great suggestions. My DD7 has a wart in between her big toe and second toe and is unable to keep flip flops on now. She is very concerned and wants it gone before summer so hopefully some of these suggestions will help her out!

Supposedly it works by triggering your own immune system to fight off the virus. We may go this route next time warts show up (nice side effect of public pools :headache: ), since it may confer some lasting immunity.

I read on wiki that the virus can live for MONTHS without a host! YUCH! Actually a good brief sum up:

People build immunity with age but teens can have a rough time before that!

I started a thread on the budget board about warts..I had one on my big toe and I wrapped my toe with a bandage soaked in vinegar. I cannot remember how long I did it for but it turned black and fell off.
